July 2, 2017 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the eighth annual “AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar" on Friday, June 30 at the Lotte Hotel Seoul.
 

Around 200 representatives from key stakeholders from the Korean and the U.S. governments, academia and industries gathered to share their insights through presentations and panel discussions under the theme of “A New Beginning: Setting the Right Stage for Attracting Innovation.” Through the seminar, AMCHAM aims to facilitate an open and constructive dialogue on innovation in the healthcare industry.

The seminar began with opening remarks from Former Chairman of AMCHAM David Ruch, followed by congratulatory remarks from government leaders including H.E. Chung Chinyoub, Minister of Health and Welfare (MOHW), H.E. Yang Seoung-jo, Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee of the National Assembly and Mr. Marc Knapper, Charg? d’Affaires ad interim in the U.S. Embassy in Seoul.

In his congratulatory remarks, Minister Chung Chinyoub stated, “In the era of innovation, I believe cementing cooperation between Korea-U.S. in healthcare is important for promoting joint growth going forward.” He expressed his appreciation of AMCHAM and its contribution to the Korea-U.S. partnership not only in commerce but also specifically in the healthcare industry.

Chairman Yang Seoung-jo expressed in his congratulatory remarks that “It is very timely that the AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar is held today as the new presidential administrations in both countries are in process of building their healthcare policies. At the National Assembly, we will continue to listen to your innovative ideas that can be reflected in our policies.”

Charg? d'Affaires Marc Knapper expressed, “There are many ways Korea and U.S. industries can cooperate together to achieve mutual growth and objectives. Through joint cooperation of both countries in private and public sectors, we can set the stage to nurture the innovation that is very important to the healthcare field.”

The plenary keynote speaker, Stephen Lockhart, Vice President of Pfizer Vaccine Clinical Research and Development in Europe and Asia Pacific, delivered a presentation on “Transforming Approaches for Breakthrough Innovation.” He emphasized, “Good regulatory environment with good direction is very important in encouraging innovation.”

During the morning session, representatives from leading healthcare companies and academia, including Prof. Lee Uhn, Director of AI-based Precision Medicine at Gachon University Gil Medical Center, delivered presentations under the theme of “The Way Ahead for Korean Healthcare Industry amidst the Industrial Revolution”, introduced their successful cases of innovation to the audience. Following the presentations, Director General of Health Industry Yang Seong Il, Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) and Director General of Medical Device Safety Kim Seong-ho, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), engaged in a panel discussion, discussing ways the government can work closely with the industry and the academia to maximize the competitiveness of the Korean healthcare industry., moderated by Jae Yoo, Area Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Medical North Asia.

In the afternoon, two topics in the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries, “Aligning Cutting-Edge Pharmaceutical Innovation with the Needs of the Patients” and “Big Data Utilization in the Value-Based Health Care (VBHC) Era: Can Healthcare Innovation Be Achieved With Big Data Analysis?”, were respectively covered simultaneously, where presenters and panelists including Prof. Kang Keon Wook of Seoul National University, Prof. Kim Dong-Wook of Yonsei University, Lee Young Sung, President of National Evidence-based Healthcare Collaborating Agency (NECA), Prof. Ahn Jeonghoon of Ewha Womans University, as well as Kwak Myung-sub, Director of Pharmaceutical Benefits and Director Jung TongRyoung, Director of Health Insurance Benefits of MOHW participated in active discussions.

암참, 국내 보건의료산업 혁신성장을 위해 힘쓸 것

2017년 7월 2일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)는 지난 6월 30일 (금) 서울 롯데호텔에서 ‘2017 암참 보건의료혁신세미나’를 개최했다.
 

올해로 제 8회를 맞는 본 세미나에는 약 200여명의 한미 정부 관계자, 보건의료 유관기관, 및 학계가 모여 ‘보건의료의 혁신성장을 이끄는 새로운 시작’이라는 주제 하에 활발한 논의와 토론이 진행됬다. ‘암참 보건의료혁신세미나’는 보건의료 혁신을 통한 보건산업 발전전략 모색과 논의의 장을 마련하기 위해 하는 데 그 의의를 두고있다.

이 날 행사는 데이비드 럭 전 암참 회장의 개회사로 시작하여, 정진엽 보건복지부 장관, 양승조 국회 보건복지위원장, 마크 내퍼 주한미국대사대리가 자리하여 축사를 전했다.

정진엽 장관은 축사를 통해 “4차 산업 혁명의 시대를 맞아 한미간의 보건의료 협력 강화는 양국의 공동성장과 발전을 도모하기 위한 중요한 과제”라고 전하며, 한미 경제간 보건의료 분야 협력에 크게 기여하고 있는 암참에 감사의 마음을 표했다.

이어진 축사에서 양승조 위원장은 “한미 양국에 새 정부가 세워지고 각국의 새로운 보건의료 정책이 한창 논의되는 현 시점에 올해 암참 보건의료혁신세미나가 개최되어 그 어느때보다 시의적절하다”라고 평가하고, 금일 세미나를 통해 도출된 혁신 사례를 국회가 적극 수렴해 앞으로 도입될 정책에 반영될 수 있도록 경청하겠다고 밝혔다.

마크 내퍼 주한미국대사대리는 축사를 통해 “한미 양국의 민관의 공동협력을 통해 헬스케어 분야에서 혁신을 위한 무대를 마련할 수 있을 것”이라 전했다.

기조연설자로 나선 스티브 록하트 화이자 유럽,아태지역 백신임상연구개발담당부사장은  “차세대 혁신을 향한 새로운 접근법 (Transforming Approaches for Breakthrough Innovation) ”을 주제로 발표를 전달했다. 록하트 부사장은 보건의료 혁신을 장려하기 위해서는 적절한 수준의 보건의료 규제가 중요하다고 강조했다.

오전 세션에서는 이언 가천대 길병원 인공지능기반 정밀의료추진단장을 비롯한 보건의료 기업 및 학계 관계자가 ‘4차 산업혁명과 한국 보건의료산업의 나아갈 길’를 주제로 발표하며, 혁신 성공사례의 예시를 공유했다. 발표에 이어 양성일 보건복지부 보건산업정책국장, 김성호 식품의약품안전처 의료기기안전국장은 패널토론의 좌장을 맡은 유병재 존슨앤드존슨메디칼 대표이사/북아시아 지역 총괄 사장과 국내 보건의료산업의 국제경쟁력 강화를 위한 정부의 산학연 지원책을 소개했다.

오후 프로그램은 제약 세션과 의료기기 세션으로 나뉘어 ‘환자치료 중심의 최첨단 연구동향’과 ‘기차기반 보건의료 시대의 빅데이터 활용 방안’을 주제로 강건욱 서울대학교병원 핵의학과 과장, 김동욱 줄기세포기반 신약개발연구단장, 이영성 한국보건의료연구원장, 안정훈 이화여자대학교 융합보건학과 부교수, 곽명섭 보건복지부 보험약재과장, 정통령 보건복지부 보험급여과장 등이 발표와 패널 토론을 맡았다.
