May 23, 2018 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) will host the “AMCHAM Seminar on Digitalization of the Shipping Industry” at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on Thursday, May 24, 2018. This is the second annual AMCHAM seminar specializing in the shipping industry, with the theme "Digitalization and Future of the Shipping Industry.”

To keep up with the market’s complexity, pace and growing competition, the ocean carrier industry is in the process of updating old-fashioned ways of handling shipping processes. As expanding digital capabilities becomes increasingly essential for competition on the global stage, stakeholders in the shipping industry have begun exploring innovative ways through which to advance the industry. Companies such as Maersk Line and IBM have begun utilizing blockchain technology in order to cut costs and risks, and increase efficiency. With industry leaders such as importers, exporters, container carriers, terminal operators and vessel owners in attendance, this seminar discusses the effect of rapid technological advancement on the shipping industry.

The seminar will begin with congratulatory remarks from H.E. Kim, Sung Chan, member of the National Assembly. Following remarks, the seminar will include two sessions. Session 1 will consist of presentations from representatives of Maersk Line and IBM Korea on “How digitalization is changing shipping industry: Contribution to GDP growth and wealth creation” and “Digitalizing the shipping industry and potential benefits,” respectively. Session 2 will include panel discussions with representatives from various companies and organizations in the shipping industry to discuss topics such as “Policy and support: Support mechanism for a digital shipping industry,” “How digitalization will change ports and the shipping industry,” and “Efficiency to be gained by shipping lines and shippers.”

암참, ‘해운업의 디지털화 세미나’ 개최

2018 년 5월 23일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)는 오는 5월 24일 (목) 그랜드 하얏트 호텔에서 ‘해운업의 디지털화 세미나’를 개최한다. 본 세미나는 암참의 제 2회 해운업 관련 세미나로, 해운업계 유관기관이 모여 ‘디지털화와 해운업의 미래’의 주제 하에 발제 발표와 토론을 벌일 예정이다.

해상운송업계는 시장의 복잡성, 속도 및 심화되는 경쟁 수준을 따라잡기 위해 사업 수행 방식을 개선하려는 노력을 지속하고 있다. 그 중 하나가 ‘디지털화’로, 이는 해상운송을 처리하는 재원, 시간, 효율성 차원에서 혁신적인 방안으로 여겨지고 있다. 글로벌 해운업체 머스크라인 (Maersk Line)과 IBM은 최근 글로벌 무역의 안전성과 효율성을 개선시키고, 비용 감소와 이익 증대를 위한 방안으로 블록체인 합작사를 설립한 바가 있다. 본 세미나는 수입자, 수출자, 컨테이너 운송업체, 터미널 운영업체, 선주 및 기타 해운업계 이해관계자들을 모시고 디지털화가 해운업계에 불러올 기회와 도전, 그리고 미래 해운업의 전망에 대한 논의가 이루어질 예정이다.

이 날 세미나에는 김성찬 국회의원이 축사를 전한 후, 2부로 나누어져 진행될 예정이다.  1부에는 ‘디지털화는 해운업계를 어떻게 변화시키고 있는가,’ ‘해운업계의 디지털화를 위해 해야 할 일, 그리고 그로 인한 잠재적 이익’을 주제로 발제 발표가 있을 예정이며, 2부에는 ‘정책 및 지원: 디지털 해운업을 위한 지원 메커니즘,’ ‘디지털화는 항만 및 해운업계를 어떻게 변화시킬 것인가,’ 그리고 ‘해운사 및 화주가 누리게 될 효율성’을 주제로 패널토론이 진행될 예정이다.
