October 2, 2019 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and Business Sweden jointly held a conference with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the U.S. Embassy Seoul and the Embassy of Sweden in Korea yesterday at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Around 300 corporate and city officials related to smart cities were in attendance to discuss sustainable smart cities created through business-city collaboration.

This conference was a part of the Seoul Smart City Summit 2019, held from October 1 to October 2. Several Smart City experts and companies from the U.S. and Sweden presented their case studies and engaged in panel discussions on the future direction of sustainable smart city development.

In his opening remarks, U.S. Ambassador to Korea Harry Harris expressed his appreciation for companies striving to resolve various urban issues through cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, 5G and big data, as well as AMCHAM for its role as the bridge builder between the U.S. and Korea. He also emphasized importance of the ongoing development of new technologies and smart cities.

Jakob Hallgren, the Ambassador of Sweden in Korea, said, “In Sweden, Smart Cities means Sustainable Cities. There is only one way to fast track the journey towards a sustainable future - and that goes through collaboration.” He added, “I am impressed by Swedish and American companies leading the way together with Korean counterparts on key issues for our future such as Connectivity, Waste Management, Smart Energy and Smart Mobility. We hope to see more of international collaboration between cities and companies.”

Smart city experts from South Korea, the U.S. and Sweden then presented case studies from their respective countries. Experts from U.S. and Swedish companies related to smart cities also presented on their companies’ activities and led panel discussions on the topics of Connectivity, Waste Management, Smart Energy and Smart Mobility. Representatives from companies including Automation Anywhere, Ericsson-LG, Ecolab, Envac, Johnson Controls, ABB, Lime and Volvo Trucks joined the discussion.

James Kim, Chairman and CEO of AMCHAM, who moderated the case study presentations and panel discussions, kicked off the event by saying, “It is imperative that countries with ability to develop cutting-edge technology, such as South Korea, U.S. and Sweden, cooperate closely to create world-leading smart cities.” He added, “AMCHAM pledges to create a platform for cooperation so that companies can take the lead in implementing smart cities through technological innovation.”

Johan Chun, Trade Commissioner and Country Manager of Business Sweden in Korea, said, “Sweden is a global leader with a long history of building sustainable cities. The Swedish industry has a long tradition of developing clean, sustainable and innovative solutions. There is also a long tradition of triple helix cooperation, these days also including the fourth component ? the citizens. We hope to bridge similar collaboration between Swedish industries and Korean and American stakeholders.”

주한미국상공회의소, 서울-스웨덴-미국 3개국 협력 스마트시티 컨퍼런스 열어

2019년 10월 02일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)와 주한스웨덴무역투자대표부는 1일 오후 중구 동대문디지털플라자(DDP)에서 서울시, 주한 스웨덴 대사관, 주한 미국 대사관과 함께 스마트시티 관련 기업 관계자 및 도시관계자, 시민 등 300여명을 초청해 도시와 기업이 함께 만드는 지속가능한 스마트시티 컨퍼런스를 개최했다.

본 컨퍼런스는 10월 1일 ? 2일 양일간 열리는 서울 스마트시티 서밋 2019의 한 세션으로 진행되었으며, 이 자리에서 미국과 스웨덴의 스마트시티 관련 기업이 참여해 사례를 발표하고, 패널 토론을 통해 향후 지속가능한 스마트시티 발전 방향에 대한 활발한 토론이 이어졌다.

본 컨퍼런스에 참여한 해리 해리스 주한미국대사는 환영사를 통해 IoT, 5G, 빅데이터 등 첨단 기술을 통한 다양한 도시 문제의 해결을 위한 기업과 한미 양국의 협력 강화를 위한 가교 역할을 하고 있는 암참의 노력에 감사를 표하며, 첨단 기술 개발 및 스마트시티 발전의 중요성에 대해 말했다.

야콥 할그렌 주한스웨덴대사는 “스웨덴에서 스마트시티는 지속 가능한 도시를 의미한다”며 “지속 가능한 미래를 향한 여정을 단축시킬 방법은 오직 협업 뿐이다”고 말했다. “연결, 폐기물 관리, 스마트에너지, 스마트교통과 같은 우리의 미래를 위한 핵심 이슈에 대해 스웨덴과 미국 기업들이 한국 기업들과 함께 협력하는데 감명 받았다”며 “우리는 지자체와 기업들간의 더 많은 국제적 협력 사례를 기대한다”고 덧붙였다.

이어진 프로그램에서는 한국, 미국, 스웨덴 각 국가의 스마트시티 전문가가 각국의 스마트시티 사례에 대한 발표를 진행했다. 이후 연결, 폐기물 관리, 스마트에너지, 스마트교통 등 네가지 주제로 미국과 스웨덴의 스마트시티 관련 대표 기업들의 사례발표 및 토론이 이어졌다. 해당 사례발표에는 오토메이션 애니웨어 코리아, 에릭슨엘지, 한국이콜랩, 엔백코리아, 존슨 컨트롤즈, ABB코리아, 라임코리아, 볼보트럭 등이 참여했다. 

기업 사례발표 및 패널토론의 좌장을 맡은 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 "세계를 선도하는 스마트시티의 구현을 위해서는 한국, 미국, 스웨덴 등 첨단기술 역량이 있는 국가들의 유기적인 협력이 중요하다” 며 “암참은 앞으로도 역량 있는 기업들이 기술혁신을 통해 스마트시티 구현에 앞장설 수 있도록 협력의 장을 마련하고 다양한 방면에서 노력할 것” 이라고 말했다.

천요한 비즈니스 스웨덴 주한스웨덴무역투자대표부 대표는 “스웨덴은 지속가능한 도시를 건설한 오랜 역사를 가진 세계적인 리더”이며 “스웨덴 산업은 깨끗하고 지속 가능하며 혁신적인 솔루션을 개발하는 오랜 전통을 가지고 있다”고 말했다. “또한 우리는 기존의 산·학·관 간의 협력 모델에 민간 요소를 포함시켰다”며 “스웨덴 업계와 한국과 미국의 이해당사자들 간에 이와 같은 협력을 이뤄내기를 희망한다”고 전했다.
