AMCHAM Kicks Off April Webinar Series on the Impact of COVID-19

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a webinar on April 3 with the theme “The Economic Impact of COVID-19 on U.S.-Korea Relations.” The guest presenters were Troy Stangarone, Senior Director and Fellow at the Korea Economic Institute of America (KEI), and Kyle Ferrier, Director of Academic Affairs and Fellow at KEI. Comparing the economic situation of Korea and the world in previous financial crisis to the situation today, Director Ferrier noted, "Korea is in much better shape than when it was in '97-'98, and now what's most important for the U.S. and South Korea is to build upon our bilateral relationship and expand to multilateral cooperation. Korea is actually in a strong position and it should try to help other countries really face the threat that coronavirus poses on a more equal ground." Noting that the travel and tourism was one of the industries hardest hit by the crisis, Senior Director Stangarone remarked, "It is going to take significant government intervention to revive the tourism and travel industry. Unless there are sort of common global standards backed by all the governments, people are going to be leery to travel." AMCHAM planned this webinar series to address major issues in the global business economy while encouraging social distancing to prevent the spread of coronavirus. About 200 people attended the webinar online. “AMCHAM is actively participating in social distancing under the strict goal of preventing the spread of the coronavirus. Given the circumstances, it is meaningful that we can promote communication and exchange of opinions using creative digital platforms such as this webinar series,” said AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim. “Discussing the future of Korea’s economy via these webinars will allow for a faster recovery.” AMCHAM will conduct a total of five webinars in April beginning with this webinar. The upcoming presentations and discussions will cover a variety of related topics, including economy, personnel/labor, contracts, emotional management, and compatibility between work and family when working at home. AMCHAM hosts Press Conference on the Current Status of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19)

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a press conference to address the current status of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) on March 5. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim and Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors Jeffrey Jones discussed the current state of COVID-19 in Korea and the impact on the foreign business community as well as steps taken by multinational companies to return business operations to normal. Chairman & CEO Kim and Chairman Jones recognized the Korean government’s proactive and transparent reaction to the virus outbreak and suggested that the high number of confirmed cases was due to the thorough testing procedures of the Korean government compared to other countries. Citing the more than 500 testing sites that examine 10,000 people daily, Chairman & CEO Kim and Chairman Jones commended the Korean government’s rapid development of innovative testing methods. The AMCHAM leadership went on to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on AMCHAM member companies. Approximately 70% of AMCHAM member companies reported disruption of travel and the decline in purchases by customers or clients. About 40% of the companies also reported a disruption in supply and logistics as well as a lack of staff or the inability to return to work. As a result, only about 20% of the companies expect to meet their target revenues for the first quarter while the majority reported an expected loss in revenues. So far, 9% of the companies are operating normally and approximately 78% expect operations to return to normal by the end of April. Chairman Kim noted that several AMCHAM member companies have implemented solutions that lessen the negative impact of the virus on operations, such as distance learning for schools, the usage of cloud computing, the distribution of masks and sanitary equipment and extension of loan paybacks for SMEs. In addition, the Chairman said, “We at AMCHAM have complete confidence that the Korean government is undertaking every possible measure to confront the situation and restore normalcy.” In terms of future measures, he commented, “The government, companies and consumers should continue to cooperate to support speedy normalization of business, especially for industries that are most affected.” Commenting on the U.S. Department of State's travel advisory on South Korea, Chairman Jones said, “The fact that the highest level travel advisory has been restricted to the Daegu region and not to all of Korea shows the U.S. government’s recognition of South Korea’s effective measures to contain the outbreak.” ### 주한미국상공회의소, 코로나19 관련 기자회견 ?2020년 3월 5일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 ‘암참’)는 3월 5일 코로나19 현황과 관련한 기자회견을 열었다. 이번 기자회견에는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사, 제프리 존스 암참 이사회 회장이 참석해 한국의 코로나19 현황, 국내 다국적 재계에 미치는 영향 및 사업 정상화를 위한 조치에 대해 발표했다. 제임스 김 회장과 제프리 존스 회장은 바이러스 발생에 대한 한국 정부의 적극적이고 철저한 대응을 언급하고, 확진 사례가 높게 식별된 점에 대해 타국 대비 신속하고 투명한 한국 정부의 검사를 이유로 들었다. 이에 덧붙여 암참은 일평균 1만 명 이상의 검사가 가능한 국내 진료 역량을 칭송하며 한국 정부의 혁신적인 억제 노력을 강조했다. 이어서 코로나19가 암참 회원사에 미치는 영향에 대한 설문 결과를 발표하며, 약70%의 암참 회원사가 출장 및 행사 진행에 제한, 전반적인 판매 감소를 겪고 있다고 전했다. 또한 40%가량의 암참 회원사가 원료 공급, 유통 차질 및 인력 부족을 겪고 있다고 전했다. 대다수가 예상 매출 손실을 전망한 반면, 약 20%의 회원사가 1분기 영업실적 목표 달성을 기대한다고 밝혔다. 현재 암참 회원사 중 9%의 기업이 정상적으로 운영되고 있으며, 약 78%는 4월 말까지 운영 정상화를 예상한다고 밝혔다. 제임스 김 회장은 암참 회원사의 클라우드를 활용한 원격 근무, 마스크 등 방역 용품 생산, 피해 중소기업 및 소상공인 대상 특별 금융 지원, 원격 교육 제공 등 현 사태 타개를 위해 기여하고 있는 다양한 접근법을 언급했다. 그는 또한 "암참은 한국 정부가 현 사태로부터 회복하기 위해 가능한 모든 조치를 취하고 있다는 확신이 있다”며 "코로나19 사태로 인해 영향을 받는 산업군에 대해 정부, 기업, 소비자가 협력해 사업 정상화를 지원해야 한다”고 말했다. 제프리 존스 회장은 미 국무부의 한국 여행 권고와 관련해 "미국이 여행금지 권고를 한국 전체가 아닌 대구 지역으로 제한한 것은 미국 정부가 한국의 실효성 있는 방역조치를 인정한 것”이라고 말했다.

On February 21, 2020, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted a Special Luncheon with Marc Knapper, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Korea and Japan at the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, at Grand Hyatt Seoul. The event covered key topics including the diplomatic and economic partnership between the U.S. and Korea as well as his personal experiences serving as a diplomat in Asia. Deputy Assistant Secretary Knapper described his experiences in several countries, including North and South Korea, Japan, India, Vietnam and Iraq. In a fireside chat with AMCHAM Korea Chairman & CEO James Kim, Deputy Assistant Secretary Knapper discussed the continuing strength of the U.S.-Korea partnership in the midst of a rapidly changing regional environment. In particular, he emphasized the enduring strong public support for the bilateral alliance among the U.S. public. “I am always optimistic about South Korea thanks to the drive and the talents and the resilience of its people. It is inspiring for those of us in the United States.” He commended South Korea’s perseverance to meet and overcome all obstacles, including the recent COVID-19 outbreak. “We are honored to get an insight into his experiences gained throughout his remarkable career,” said James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO. “He is truly an expert in his field and has a lot to offer on the key issues surrounding South Korea’s relations with the U.S., Japan and North Korea.” Marc Knapper is a member of the Senior Foreign Service of the U.S. Department of State and he has served as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Korea and Japan since August 2018. AMCHAM Hosts “2020 Diversity Forum”

(한글은 아래 참조) ?February 13, 2020 (Seoul) ? On February 13, 2020, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) held the first "AMCHAM 2020 Diversity Forum" at Lotte Hotel Seoul. Led by the AMCHAM Women's Leadership Committee, the forum examined the current status of global women's leadership and provided mentoring sessions for future female leaders. Starting with congratulatory speeches by James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of the AMCHAM Board of Governors, and Eun-Mi Chae, Co-Chair of the AMCHAM Women’s Leadership Committee and Managing Director of FedEx Express Korea, the forum featured presentations on women’s career development and global economic activity trends, followed by mentoring sessions. During the mentoring session, seven women executives from global AMCHAM member companies met with approximately 85 women to discuss a range of topics, including Relationship Development, Communication and Networking Skills, Career Development, Work Life Balance and Discovering Your Strength. In addition to hearing firsthand the experience and knowledge of female leaders in various industrial fields, they learned know-how for overcoming hardships experienced by women in middle management and growing into the leaders of the next generation. “영화 ‘기생충’ 아카데미 수상, 문화 강국 대한민국이 인정 받는 순간”

주한미국상공회의소, ‘기생충’의 아카데미 4관왕 축하 ?2020년 2월 11일 ? 국내 미국 기업을 대표하는 주한미국상공회의소(이하 ‘암참’)는 봉준호 감독의 영화 ‘기생충이’ 지난 2월 9일(현지 시각) 미국 로스앤젤레스에서 개최된 아카데미 시상식에서 작품상, 감독상, 각본상, 국제영화상 등 4개 분야를 석권한 것에 대해 축하의 뜻을 알렸다. 암참은 페이스북과 인스타그램 등 공식 소셜미디어 계정을 통해 “92회 아카데미 시상식에서 이룬 영화 ’기생충’의 역사적인 업적에 대해 한국 영화 산업에 찬사를 보낸다”는 메시지를 전달했다. 암참 관계자에 따르면 “비영어권인 한국 영화의 아카데미 다관왕이라는 쾌거는 미국 사회가 대한민국을 경제 강국 뿐 아닌 문화 강국으로 인정하는 고대하던 순간”이라며 “이를 계기로 더 다양한 한국 문화가 미국 내에 전파되고, 한미 양국 간 경제 분야를 넘어 문화 분야에서도 더 활발한 교류가 이어지도록 암참 또한 가교 역할을 해 나가겠다”고 밝혔다. 한편, 암참은 오는 4월 회장단과 대표 회원사로 구성된 방미 사절단을 꾸려 워싱턴 D.C.를 방문, 미국 내 주요 정책입안자들과 재계 인사들을 만나 한국의 정치, 경제 상황과 비즈니스 환경을 설명하는 자리를 가진다. 특히, 이번 ‘기생충’의 아카데미 수상을 통한 한국 영화 산업의 높은 수준에 대한 미국 사회의 지대한 관심을 기반으로 한국의 다양한 문화 컨텐츠 사업에 대한 대미 홍보에도 힘을 쏟을 것으로 알려졌다.

AMCHAM Hosts the First of the Special Dialogue Series with Key U.S. and Korea Government Officials

On February 4, 2019, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted a Special Breakfast Meeting with Andrew Kim, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Korea Mission Center, at the Lotte Hotel. Held as part of a special dialogue series with key U.S. ? Korea government officials, this event explored the current state and future outlook of South Korea ? Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) relations. Andrew Kim described his experience coordinating the diplomacy between the U.S. and the DPRK. In a fireside chat with Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM Korea James Kim, Andrew Kim shared insights into the current status and future prospects of dialogue with DPRK. “We are honored to have a figure of such stature and experience with us today,” remarked James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO. “Today is a rare chance for the American businesses in Korea to gain a true insider’s perspective on so many of the pivotal events and key figures in the U.S.-DPRK-ROK dynamic.” When asked about the North Korean diplomatic situation and how it will develop moving forward, Andrew Kim said, “If 2017 was about managing crisis, this year focuses on managing risk. While North Korea may continue to take provocative action to assert their relevance, I do not think we will see a return to the crisis of 2017.” Andrew Kim served for 28 years as an intelligence officer in the CIA. He established the CIA’s Korea Mission Center in 2017 to fulfill President Donald Trump's mandate to address the threat posed by North Korea. In this role, Andrew Kim was instrumental in organizing the historic summits between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un. He also accompanied CIA Director and then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Pyongyang in meeting with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un several times. This Breakfast Meeting launches a series of AMCHAM special meetings with key government officials in the first quarter. AMCHAM to Host 2nd Women’s Leadership Forum on November 20 at Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and Amway Korea will host the second Women’s Leadership Forum 2019 on November 20, 2019, from 5:30 PM at the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel. The 2019 Women's Leadership Forum will examine the current status of women's leadership in Korea and explore ways to enhance women's leadership by fostering female talent. The program for the forum will include welcoming and congratulatory remarks, a keynote speech, guest speaker presentations, a Q&A session followed by dinner and a networking session. The keynote speech will be delivered by Bo-Ra Shin, the first member of the National Assembly to utilize maternity and parental leave. She will address the promotion of women’s participation in economic activities and the creation of a policy environment to that fosters women's leadership.
