AMCHAM Explores Increasing Foreign Investment in Korea with Korean Presidential Candidate Lee Jae-myung

AMCHAM Special Meeting with Presidential Candidate Lee Jae-myung

December 2, 2021 – On December 2, 2021, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a Special Meeting with Lee Jae-myung, presidential candidate for the ruling Democratic Party of Korea, at the Conrad Hotel Seoul.

Key multinational AMCHAM member companies 3M Korea Ltd., Applied Materials Korea, ACE American Fire and Marine Insurance Company (Chubb in Korea), Philip Morris Korea Inc., Qualcomm Korea, GE Korea, Pfizer Korea, MSD Korea Co., Ltd., GM Korea, MGE International, Delta Air Lines and Cytiva were present at the meeting to discuss issues that affected the global business community in Korea.

The meeting explored Lee’s prospective policies as the potential next president of Korea as well as his goals for the economy such as increasing Korea’s competitiveness as an investment destination for American companies and measures for creating jobs for balanced regional development.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “We appreciate Mr. Lee Jae-myung’s important role in setting Korean policies that are helpful for foreign direct investment and help make Korea a regional headquarters for Asia.” He added, “There is lot of competition with other countries to attract foreign investment from strategic sectors like semiconductors. We need the Korean Government’s proactive support to win these R&D investments into Korea. Now is a perfect time to put our best effort forward.” Chairman & CEO Kim continued, “AMCHAM is a non-political and non-partisan organization. I look forward to today’s discussion on how we could further accelerate the economic growth across Korea.”

In his opening remarks, presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung said, “The Korean and U.S. will continue to be great partners. Especially as the global supply chain is going through much change, economic cooperation between the two countries is now more important.” Regarding government regulations, he said, “We will enhance regulations that promote competition and competitiveness and get rid of those that shackle competitiveness or decrease efficiency. We will try to promote creativity and freedom on the part of the businesses so they can adapt themselves to the future.” He added, “We really want to increase foreign investment, jobs, and national income. We will do everything to encourage foreign investment in Korea.”

This is AMCHAM’s second meeting with Lee Jae-myung this year. In April 2021, Mr. Lee hosted select members of the AMCHAM Board of Governors as Governor of Gyeonggi Province to discuss increasing foreign investment in Gyeonggi.

주한미국상공회의소, 이재명 대선 후보 초청 특별 간담회 개최

주한 美 기업 지방 유치, 직접 투자 확대 및 일자리 창출 방안 모색

2021년 12월 02일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 오후 이재명 더불어민주당 대통령 후보를 초청하여 특별 간담회를 개최하였다.

본 간담회에는 암참 이사진과 주한 미국 기업 대표단을 포함한 14인이 참석하였으며, 참여 기업은 한국쓰리엠, 어플라이드머티어리얼즈코리아, 에이스손해보험(Chubb), 한국필립모리스, 퀄컴코리아, GE 코리아, 한국화이자제약, 한국MSD, 한국지엠, MGE 인터내셔널, 델타항공 및 싸이티바 등이다.

콘래드 서울 호텔에서 비공개로 진행된 이번 간담회에서 이 후보는 주한 미국 기업 대표단과 함께 차기 대선 후보로서의 정책·미래비전과 미국 기업들의 투자처라는 관점에서 대한민국의 경쟁력 제고, 지역 균형 발전을 위한 일자리 창출 방안 등 경제 성장을 중점으로 이야기를 이어나갔다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 간담회에 앞선 환영사를 통해, "외국인 직접투자 증진과 대한민국을 많은 기업들의 아시아 지역본부로 만들기 위한 정책 수립에 있어 이 후보께서 중요한 역할을 해 주실 것을 기대한다. 반도체 등 전략분야의 외국인 투자 유치 경쟁이 극심한 가운데, 연구개발(R&D) 관련 투자 유치에 성공하기 위해서는 한국 정부의 적극적인 지원이 필요하며 바로 지금이 적기라고 판단된다.” 라고 말했다. 또한 “암참은 비정치적이고 초당적인 조직이며, 오늘의 대화를 통해 대한민국 전역에 걸친 경제 성장을 더욱 가속화할 수 있는 방안에 대한 논의를 나눌 수 있어 영광이다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 

이재명 후보는 모두발언을 통해, “우리 대한민국 경제와 미국 경제는 매우 긴밀한 협력 관계에 있고, 앞으로 협력해 나아가야 할 부분 또한 무궁무진 하다는 생각이 든다. 최근, 글로벌 공급망이 많은 변화를 겪으면서 앞으로의 한미 간 경제 협력이 더욱 중요해질 것이다.” 라고 말하며, “경제화 효율을 제공하는 규제는 강화하되, 경제적 효율을 괴롭히는 규제는 철저하게 완화하겠다.” 라고 밝혔다. 그는 또한 이어, “대한민국 정부 입장에서는, 그리고 대한민국 국민의 입장에서는, 미국을 포함한 외국 투자가 매우 중요하다. 고용도 늘려가고, 국내 소득도 늘어나는 매우 바람직한 일이기 때문에, 여러가지 방식들을 동원해서 국내 투자가 원만하게 이루어질 수 있도록 방법을 찾아가겠다.” 라고 말했다. 

한편 암참과 이재명 후보와의 만남은 이번이 두 번째로, 지난 4월 이 후보는 경기도지사 자격으로 암참 이사진을 초청하여 외국인 투자 확대를 논의한 바 있다.
