AMCHAM Explores U.S.-ROK defense cooperation with 

National Assembly National Defense Committee

 -AMCHAM Special Meeting with H.E. Kim Byung Joo and H.E. Shin Won Sik-

June 30, 2021 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a Special Meeting with H.E. Kim Byung Joo and H.E. Shin Won Sik of the National Defense Committee of the National Assembly at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. Assemblyman Kim and Assemblyman Shin explored the evolving state of U.S.-ROK defense cooperation.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said in his opening remarks, “During a turbulent time for the Korean Peninsula and the bilateral alliance, both of our speakers played a crucial role in bolstering the bilateral alliance and keeping all residents of Korea safe.” He added, “Today’s event is not only a great opportunity to share insights with a powerful voice on Korea’s defense policy and the U.S.-ROK partnership, but also a chance to show our gratitude toward two great patriots and supporters of the U.S-ROK Alliance.”

In his presentation, H.E. Kim Byung Joo underlined the importance of the U.S.-Korea alliance. “Based on the achievements of the Korea-U.S. summit, I hope the ROK-U.S. partnership extends beyond the military to build a comprehensive strategic alliance and accelerates reciprocal cooperation to overcome COVID-19 and enhance global economic recovery." He continued, “The Korean government will continue to make efforts to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula and establish a permanent peace based on a solid U.S.-Korea alliance and joint defense posture."

H.E. Shin Won Sik also emphasized the importance of public-private collaboration. “I would like to express my sincere appreciation to the various defense companies who are engaged in research and development activities day and night to strengthen their defense capabilities. In terms of the ROK-U.S. alliance, we need to actively cooperate with the foreign companies, and the Korean government needs to support smooth joint development.”

In the fireside chat with Dong Ha, Northrop Grumman Korea Chief Executive & President and AMCHAM Vice Chair and AMCHAM Aerospace & Defense (A&D) Committee Co-Chair, Assemblyman Kim and Assemblyman Shin discussed various issues including Korea’s defense policy, outlook for the diplomatic situation on the Peninsula and shared their insights to strengthen strategic alliance between the two countries.

주한미국상공회의소, 국회 국방위원회 김병주, 신원식 의원 초청 특별 간담회 개최

- 한·미 방위 협력 방안 및 양국의 전략적 동맹 강화 방안 모색 -​

2021년 6월 30일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 오후 포시즌스 호텔 서울에서 국회 국방위원회 김병주 의원(더불어민주당)과 신원식 의원(국민의힘)을 초청하여 특별 간담회를 개최하였다. 이번 간담회는 국회 국방위원회 김병주 의원과 신원식 의원을 초청해 암참 회원들과 함께 한·미 방위 협력 방안 및 전략적 동맹 강화 방안을 모색하기 위해 마련되었다. 

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해, “오늘 간담회에 함께해 주신 두 분의 의원님 모두 한반도와 양국 동맹의 격랑기에 한미동맹을 강화하고 대한민국 국민의 안전을 지키는 데에 중요한 역할을 하셨다” 라고 말하며 이어, “오늘 간담회는 한국의 국방 정책과 한·미 파트너십에 대해 두 의원님의 힘 있는 의견을 나눌 수 있는 좋은 기회일 뿐 아니라 애국자이자 한미동맹의 열렬한 지지자이신 두 분께 감사의 마음을 전할 수 있는 기회” 라고 덧붙였다. 

김병주 의원은 연설을 통해 “이번 한·미 정상회담의 성과를 발판 삼아 한미동맹이 포괄적 전략 동맹으로 발전하고 한·미 양국이 코로나 극복과 세계 경제 회복을 위해 호혜적 협력을 가속화해 나갈 수 있기를 기대한다” 라고 밝히며, “우리 정부는 앞으로도 강력한 한미동맹과 연합방위 태세를 기반으로 한반도 비핵화와 영구적인 평화정착을 위해 노력할 것” 이라고 말했다. 

신원식 의원은 미국 뿐 아니라 태평양 지역의 다른 민주주의 국가들과도 강력한 동맹을 유지하는 것의 중요성에 대해 역설하며, “국방력 강화를 위해 불철주야 연구개발 활동을 하고 계신 여러 방산업체 관계자 분들의 노고에 감사드린다”고 말했다. 신의원은 또한 “한미동맹의 차원에서 이제는 ‘대체재’와 ‘보완재’가 될 부분을 잘 선정하여, ‘보완재 개발을 시도하되, 동시에 기존 수입장비를 국산화 할 수 있는 ‘대체재’ 개발이 필요하다. 첨단기술 분야에 대해서는 적극적으로 해외 선진업체와 공동 개발을 해야 하고, 정부는 원활한 공동개발이 진행될 수 있도록 지원할 필요가 있다” 고 밝혔다. 

김병주 의원과 신원식 의원은 이후 이어진 암참 부회장이자 암참 방산분과위원회 공동 의장인 노스롭그루먼 코리아 하동진 사장과의 좌담을 통해, 한국의 국방 정책을 비롯한 한반도 외교 상황 등 다양한 현안을 논의하고 양국의 전략적 동맹 강화를 위한 의견을 나눴다.
