December 16, 2021 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) met with Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez on December 16, 2021, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. The AMCHAM delegation included AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim and representatives from PwC, 3M, P&G, and Applied Materials.

The meeting explored the evolving business environment in Korea and how Korea is addressing key topics discussed at the President Moon-Biden Summit earlier this year. They outlined some areas in need of improvement that can become potential areas for partnership and collaboration, especially in digital economy and clean energy. They also discussed existing regulatory challenges that American companies in Korea are facing, such as higher taxes, labor inflexibility and high cost of compliance in comparison to neighboring countries.

Under Secretary Jose W. Fernandez highlights, “There are more than 1,200 US companies operating or exporting to the ROK, including large U.S. enterprises, thanks to our free trade agreement.” He continued, “We will not succeed in advancing our shared interests without elevating international science and technology cooperation. A critical component of how we do this is people-to-people exchanges, building and maintaining a strong network between governments, companies, civil societies, and universities.”

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Since the Biden-Moon summit this past May, we’ve been witnessing the U.S.-Korea alliance growing closer than ever before, with the two countries holding ongoing strategic dialogues on global issues such as supply chain resilience and public health.” He added, “Despite the pandemic, U.S. companies and their contribution to the Korean economy have grown significantly over the recent years. And we look forward to bringing U.S. and Korea even closer.”

This meeting was part of Under Secretary Fernandez’s visit to Korea to attend the Senior Economic Dialogue.

주한미국상공회의소, 호세 페르난데스 美 국무부 경제차관과의 단독 간담회 마쳐

한국 內 글로벌 비즈니스 커뮤니티 현황 및 협업 분야 모색

2021년 12월 16일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 16일 오후 포시즌스 호텔 서울에서 호세 페르난데스(Jose W. Fernandez) 美 국무부 경제차관과의 만남을 가졌다. 이번 간담회에는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사를 비롯, 삼일회계법인(PwC), 3M, P&G, 어플라이드머티어리얼즈(Applied Materials) 등이 암참 대표단으로 참석했다.

본 간담회에서는 날로 진화하고 있는 대한민국의 기업환경에 대한 논의와 함께 올 초 한·미 정상회담에서 제시된 주요 안건들이 어떻게 실행되고 있는지를 검토하였다. 또한 디지털 경제 및 클린 에너지 분야의 관점에서, 개선의 여지가 있거나 향후 양국의 파트너십과 협력이 이루어질 수 있는 영역에 대한 논의가 이어졌다.

특별히 주목할 만한 부분은 주변국에 비해 높은 세율, 낮은 노동 유연성, 기업의 법적 책임 등 美 국적 기업의 한국 內 기업운영에 있어 걸림돌이 되는 규제에 대한 문제 제시가 이루어졌다는 점이다.

호세 페르난데스 미 국무부 차관은 간담회를 통해 “한·미 FTA 덕분에 미국 대기업을 포함한 1,200개 이상의 미국 기업이 한국에 진출하거나 수출하고 있다"고 강조하며, “과학 기술 분야의 국제적 협력 없이는 공동의 이익 증진은 불가능하다. 이를 위해서는 인적 교류가 필수 요소이며, 정부와 기업, 시민 사회 및 대학 간의 강력한 네트워크를 구축하는 것이 중요하다.” 라고 말했다.

행사를 함께 주재한 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 “지난 5월 바이든-문 정상회담 이후 글로벌 공급망 회복, 공중 보건 등의 이슈와 관련하여 양국이 지속적인 전략적 대화를 이어가는 등 그 어느 때보다 강력한 한미동맹을 목격하고 있다.” 고 말하며, “코로나 팬데믹의 어려운 상황에도 불구하고, 美 국적 기업의 한국 경제에 대한 기여는 상당한 증가세를 유지하고 있다. 이에 만족하지 않고 앞으로도 한미 양국이 보다 더 긴밀한 관계를 유지하며 진솔한 대화를 지속할 수 있기를 바란다. 암참은 앞으로도 지속적으로 한·미 경제협력의 가교 역할을 충실히 해 나갈 것.”이라고 화답했다.

한편 본 간담회는 호세 페르난데스 미 국무부 경제차관의 한미 고위급 경제협의회(SED) 참석을 위한 방한 일정 중 하나로 성사되었다.
