POSCO holds global volunteer campaign for local communities both in Korea, abroad
By Lee Min-hyung, The Korea Times - POSCO Group has
launched the 2024 Global Volunteer Week, with more than 20,000 staff members
engaging in diverse volunteer activities near the firm’s workplaces both here
and abroad, the company said Tuesday.
The social program will run for nine days from May 23.
This year's edition marks the 15th anniversary of its establishment in 2010,
and is part of the group’s efforts to give back to local communities.
This year, the firm’s executives and employees —
including POSCO Group Chairman Chang In-hwa — will take part in some 800
volunteer activities around the world, the company said.
Chang visited the nation’s southeastern industrial city
of Pohang to express gratitude to the people there for supporting the growth of
the steelmaker.
“Starting from the beginning, the local community in
Pohang has been a strong supporter of the company, enabling us to become the
world’s top steelmaker,” Chang said. “We will keep making more efforts for
mutual growth with the local community.”
A group of POSCO employees also accompanied Chang and
helped fix some old houses there.
“I have been living in the city for more than five
decades, and POSCO staff members have always helped us by joining a series of
volunteer campaigns,” Sung Pil-im, a resident there, said. “I want to express
gratitude for them showing sincerity for decades.”
POSCO Group is also expanding its corporate social
responsibility (CSR) campaign abroad. The company set up an artificial reef in
Thailand to help the nation protect its marine ecosystem. POSCO is also
establishing playgrounds for children in Turkey by using construction
materials.
The steelmaker also runs the POSCO 1% Foundation, a
charity organization established in 2003, which aims to support the growth of
socially vulnerable groups and future generations. The foundation pushes for
diverse social programs to achieve co-prosperity within local communities.
