AMCHAM hosts discussion on privacy policies in AI era

BY CHO YONG-JUN, Korea JoongAng Daily - Privacy policies in the AI era should be principle-based, not rule-based, according to the chairperson of the Personal Information Protection Commission (PIPC) at a policy talk hosted by the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) on Thursday.

AMCHAM invited the PIPC Chairperson Ko Hak-soo to share about the commission’s policy decisions on the country’s privacy law in the era of AI.

The Personal Information Protection Act was made during the analog era and it was not designed with the AI-era in mind, where large data is processed,” said Ko on Thursday in the Amcham policy talks session held at the Four Seasons Hotel in Jongno District, central Seoul.

We have no choice but to move away from rule-based [policies] to principle-based [ones] because the technology changes so much,” Chairperson Ko said, adding that the PIPC announced guidelines on the treatment of public access data on Wednesday. The PIPC plans to announce guidelines on biometrics and robot delivery services in the future.

The PIPC also hopes to discuss creating an international standard for personal information with the UN AI Advisory body, the Global Privacy Assembly (GPA).

The PIPC plans to host international conferences on AI privacy and participate in the 2025 GPA General Assembly.
