AMCHAM, KITA Co-host 2019 Doing Business in the U.S. Seminar

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) co-hosted the first Doing Business in the U.S. Seminar on December 3 at COEX. In addition to U.S. Ambassador to Korea Harry Harris, representatives from the Association of American State Offices in Korea (ASOK), law firm K&L Gates LLP, insurance company Chubb, personnel consulting firm Kelly Services, and global e-commerce company Amazon attended the seminar and shared their insights. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim remarked, “In close alignment with Ambassador Harris and the U.S. Government, AMCHAM has made facilitating Korean investment into the U.S. one of our core missions. Today’s Seminar is a tremendous accomplishment that will help many Korean entrepreneurs enter the U.S. market for the first time and significantly strengthen the economic partnership between our two countries.” In his opening remarks, KITA Chairman Kim Young Ju remarked, “With 2.4 percent economic growth, 3.5 percent unemployment and 1.8 percent low inflation, the U.S. is currently facing a "Goldilocks" environment, meaning neither too hot nor too cold. Our small and medium-sized businesses should actively enter the U.S. market and seek growth through cooperation with promising companies.” "Investment incentives such as tax and financing are different from state to state depending on the way in which new corporations are established, U.S. companies are acquired, and joint ventures are made," said presenter Tyler Won, Partner at K&L Gates LLP. AMCHAM to Host 2nd Women’s Leadership Forum on November 20 at Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and Amway Korea will host the second Women’s Leadership Forum 2019 on November 20, 2019, from 5:30 PM at the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel. The 2019 Women's Leadership Forum will examine the current status of women's leadership in Korea and explore ways to enhance women's leadership by fostering female talent. The program for the forum will include welcoming and congratulatory remarks, a keynote speech, guest speaker presentations, a Q&A session followed by dinner and a networking session. The keynote speech will be delivered by Bo-Ra Shin, the first member of the National Assembly to utilize maternity and parental leave. She will address the promotion of women’s participation in economic activities and the creation of a policy environment to that fosters women's leadership. Sungho Lee, Professor at University of Seoul, will present on the “Current Status of Korean Entrepreneurship Index (AGER) and Economic Participation,” followed by Jean DeSombre, Executive Vice President North Asia of Fresenius Medical Care, who will discuss the topic “Self-Empowerment: The Essential Element of Women's Leadership in the Global Era.” "Policy support is needed to promote women's economic activities and start-ups. We hope this forum will serve as an opportunity to reconsider ways to improve female leadership in corporates and foster next-generation female talent,” said AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, explaining the purpose of the Forum. AMCHAM Korea Led a Business Delegation to the 2019 Indo-Pacific Business Forum in Bangkok

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) led a business mission to the 2019 Indo-Pacific Business Forum in Bangkok, Thailand from November 3 to November 4. The mission was focused on sharing with the countries in the region some of the best practices of strong U.S.-Korea business partnership, while learning about the challenges and opportunities for businesses in the fast-growing region of the Indo-Pacific. U.S.-Korea Business Council and AMCHAM Korea Lead Digital Economy Business Mission to Seoul

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s U.S.-Korea Business Council and AMCHAM Korea led a digital economy business mission to Seoul, Korea from October 30 to November 1, 2019. The mission was focused on sharing policy priorities that will enable innovation and spur job creation, as well as allow U.S. firms to offer new products and services that increase data protection and digital security in Korea. The group was comprised of over a dozen leading technology firms, as well as companies in the travel, financial services, manufacturing, and consumer goods sector that are using technology to deliver innovative products to consumers around the world. “The potential of the digital economy is enormous, and offers a chance to strengthen the US-Korea relationship even further,” said Esperanza Jelalian, Executive Director of the USKBC. “We believe there is still a lot of work to be done around the world to create an enabling policy environment, and Korea is no different. We were encouraged by the willingness of the government to engage in dialogue with the companies developing new and emerging technology, and are excited to continue the conversation.” “This is a tremendous step forward in the commercial and economic dialogue between Korea and the U.S.,” remarked James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM. “All of the companies participating in this mission are major stakeholders in the Korean economy who are contributing jobs, investment and innovation to the Korean economy. AMCHAM Hosts Innovation Camp with Global Corporate CEO Mentors at Chungbuk National University to S…

(한글은 아래 참조) October 30, 2019 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) held the 14th AMCHAM Innovation Camp on October 29, Chungbuk National University. The AMCHAM delegation, comprised of seven representatives from leading global companies, met with around 150 university students to share insight about the skills required in the global job market. Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors and Foundation Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation, who has led the Innovation Camp since its inception, delivered the congratulatory remarks. “AMCHAM has been hosting mentoring programs where our mentors consist of leaders of global companies with diverse experiences can give practical and useful advice to university students. This year we have teamed up with Chungbuk University and I hope this opportunity will help students in their path towards becoming global leaders.” The mentoring program officially began soon after his introduction of the event’s speakers. The Innovation Camp was well received by the participating students, as it consisted of leaders from different fields providing practical mentoring to develop the students’ leadership skills and help distinguish their career paths. John Yi, President of Raytheon International Korea, represented the defense industry; YouMe Jeon, Managing Director of Kelly Services, discussed female leadership and the HR field; Younghee Chung, Vice President of Herbalife, discussed sales and female leadership; Ryan Lee, President of HUB Investment Management represented finance and investment; Yosep Hong, President of KOAM Innovation, discussed the Chumsan Industry and Energy Sector and Director Kichul Ryu of Honeywell Performance Technologies represented the marketing field. AMCHAM launched Innovation Camp in 2013 with the aim of promoting innovation in the domestic industry and for supporting employment in small and medium-sized enterprises. Innovation Camp features company executives from AMCHAM multinational member companies as mentors who help Korean students grow into global leaders. AMCHAM Holds Business Roundtable on Future of Autonomous Driving

(한글은 아래 참조) ? October 29, 2019 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) held a business roundtable to discuss the future of autonomous driving at the Grand Hyatt Seoul hotel today. Around twenty representatives of Korean and global companies and Sang-min Lee, four-term member of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Special Committee on Science and Technology, were in attendance to discuss concrete infrastructure and policy measures needed to promote autonomous driving in Korea. James Kim, Chairman and CEO of AMCHAM, who moderated the discussion, kicked off the event by noting “Under President Moon Jae-in’s leadership, the Korean Government is showing bold initiative in pioneering the field of autonomous vehicles.” He added, “Global companies are enthusiastic supporters of the President’s vision and are eager to help make it a reality. I hope today’s meeting will help jump-start the dialogue between Korea and the global business community on autonomous vehicles.” In his congratulatory remarks, Chairman Lee noted President Moon Jae-in’s recent declaration that Korea would be the first nation to commercialize autotomize vehicles, adding “Whether we lead or lag in the development of autonomous technology, and how quickly and innovatively we blend this technology with other industries, will decide how we can adapt well to the new era of hyper connectivity. For this reason, not only the world’s leading automakers but also the high-tech companies such as Visteon are putting in a lot of effort to develop autonomous driving technology.” Chairman Lee stressed that global companies have an important role to play in realizing the Moon Administration’s goal to commercialize autonomous vehicles. The roundtable continued with a keynote presentation by Sachin Lawande, global President and CEO of Visteon Corporation, a leading global automotive electronics supplier and Fortune 500 company based in the U.S. Under the title of “Path to Autonomous Driving,” President Lawande’s presentation examined the technical and regulatory hurtles to commercializing autonomous vehicles. In particular, President Lawande emphasized the need for cooperation on a global scale, remarking “No company can do this alone. No country can do this alone. Let’s collaborate.” Following President Lawande’s keynote presentation, the participants engaged in an in-depth discussion on how global companies can contribute to the commercialization of autonomous vehicles in Korea. The participants discussed concrete ways to overcome many challenges including technology, cybersecurity and regulatory barriers. AMCHAM, Business Sweden Hold Seoul-Sweden-U.S. Smart City Conference

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and Business Sweden jointly held a conference with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, the U.S. Embassy Seoul and the Embassy of Sweden in Korea yesterday at the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP). Around 300 corporate and city officials related to smart cities were in attendance to discuss sustainable smart cities created through business-city collaboration. This conference was a part of the Seoul Smart City Summit 2019, held from October 1 to October 2. Several Smart City experts and companies from the U.S. and Sweden presented their case studies and engaged in panel discussions on the future direction of sustainable smart city development. In his opening remarks, U.S. Ambassador to Korea Harry Harris expressed his appreciation for companies striving to resolve various urban issues through cutting-edge technologies such as IoT, 5G and big data, as well as AMCHAM for its role as the bridge builder between the U.S. and Korea. He also emphasized importance of the ongoing development of new technologies and smart cities. Jakob Hallgren, the Ambassador of Sweden in Korea, said, “In Sweden, Smart Cities means Sustainable Cities. There is only one way to fast track the journey towards a sustainable future - and that goes through collaboration.” He added, “I am impressed by Swedish and American companies leading the way together with Korean counterparts on key issues for our future such as Connectivity, Waste Management, Smart Energy and Smart Mobility. We hope to see more of international collaboration between cities and companies.” Smart city experts from South Korea, the U.S. and Sweden then presented case studies from their respective countries. Experts from U.S. and Swedish companies related to smart cities also presented on their companies’ activities and led panel discussions on the topics of Connectivity, Waste Management, Smart Energy and Smart Mobility. Representatives from companies including Automation Anywhere, Ericsson-LG, Ecolab, Envac, Johnson Controls, ABB, Lime and Volvo Trucks joined the discussion. AMCHAM Holds Joint Seminar with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and KUSEC

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM, Chairman and CEO James Kim) and the Korea-U.S. Economic Council (KUSEC, Chairman Kim Young-joo of KITA) jointly held a seminar on customs policy with U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Trade Tower in Samseong-dong on Wednesday, August 14. Speakers and panelists from CBP and the U.S. Embassy in Seoul shared information on various topics useful to companies exporting to the U.S., such as anti-dumping/countervailing duties, recent Section 232 and Section 301 trade remedies, verifications/audits and prior disclosures, before an audience of about 100 members of AMCHAM and KUSEC and companies interested in entering the U.S. market. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim also said at the event, “AMCHAM launched the Trade & Customs Committee last year to respond to the rapidly changing global trade environment, and we prepared this joint seminar with KUSEC to host high-level speakers from CBP, whom Korean companies would not normally have an opportunity to directly inquire CBP about their topic of interest.” Chairman Kim added, “We will continue to make efforts to promote trade between Korea and the U.S. by supporting U.S. companies’ activities in Korea as well as Korean companies’ entry into the U.S. market.” As part of such efforts, AMCHAM will host its first Doing Business in the U.S. Seminar, focusing on the U.S. investment environment, trends and opportunities, later this year. AMCHAM's Efforts to Promote Innovation in Korean Healthcare Industry Marks 10th Anniversary

June 16, 2019 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the 10th AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar on Friday, June 14, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul.
