AMCHAM Gathers Dream Team to Help Accelerate Korea’s Journey to becoming Hub of Regional Headquarters Across Asia

- 5th AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2023 -

March 29, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the fifth AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2023 this morning at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. With distinguished guests, including officials from the U.S. and Korean governments and representatives from domestic and foreign companies’ attendance, this year’s seminar featured an all-start line up to mark the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-Korea alliance.

Under the theme “Mapping the Path to Success: The Case for Making Korea a Regional Hub,” this year’s event featured in-depth presentations and panel discussions on policies that the Korean government should consider in order to accelerate Korea’s journey to becoming regional headquarters across Asia and boost the country’s competitiveness.

In his opening remarks, Chairman & CEO James Kim of AMCHAM said, “With the upcoming U.S.-Korea summit in April, Korea has a lot at stake in establishing itself as a true global leader.” He continued, “AMCHAM fully endorses President Yoon Suk-Yeol's vision to turn the Korean economy into a digital powerhouse that drives innovation and cutting-edge technologies.” He added, “I am confident that today's seminar will enhance our knowledge and insights, enabling us to fully leverage Korea's potential as a regional headquarters for driving innovation and business growth.

Several key officials from the U.S. and Korean governments, including H.E. Lee Chang-Yang, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy, The Hon. Philip Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, The Hon. Yoo Jeongbok, Mayor of Incheon Metropolitan City, and The Hon. Oh Se-hoon, Mayor of Seoul Metropolitan City, attended the event to share their commitment to strengthening U.S.-Korea collaboration.

MOTIE Minister Lee Chang-Yang said, “The global trade environment is evolving rapidly. As all countries are devoting their resources into revamping their high-tech industrial supply chain, and the U.S.-Korea bilateral economic alliance must be stronger than ever. The U.S. and Korea have been working to promote common core values and are the best collaborative partners for fostering high-tech industries and driving supply chain management.” “Through various efforts such as establishing a support system for boosting corporate investment and attracting foreign investment, the Korean government will make Korea a country where global companies can boldly plan future investments,” he continued.

Following the opening remarks, Henry An, Chairman of the AMCHAM Board of Governors and Senior Partner at Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers delved into the results of the 2023 AMCHAM Business Survey, which was conducted earlier this year to gauge the current state of global businesses operating in Korea and areas in need of improvement in order to bolster Korea’s competitiveness as a regional business hub.

He proposed seven key policies to enhance Korea’s competitiveness as a regional business hub, including improving tax structure, ensuring labor market flexibility, bolstering cross-border data movement through deregulation of privacy and data-related policies, aligning domestic regulations related to financial services with the global standard, mitigating CEO risk, enhancing intellectual property protection, improving renewable energy accessibility, promoting women’s participation in the economy, and boosting Korea’s ESG efforts.  

Another highlight of the seminar was the Fireside Chat on the topic of “Accelerating Korea as an Innovation Hub.” Moderated by Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of the Partners for the Future Foundation, the discussion included speakers from diverse industries, including VP of Finance Global Operations Pankaj Srivastava from Coupang, Area Managing Director, North Asia Jinyong Oh from Johnson & Johnson, and Managing Director, Asia Pacific Jeff Moomaw of Delta Air Lines.

Representatives from Incheon Metropolitan City, ACE American Fire and Marine Insurance Company Korea (A Chubb Company), PERSEOLKELLY Consulting, Kim & Chang, Altos Ventures and CODIT discussed various areas of opportunities in Korea to support its transformation into a top destination for global companies. Presentations covered key topics such as Incheon City’s plans for becoming a global business hub, best practices in digital insurance innovation, the best engagement strategy for managing the “quiet-quitting” generation, policies to achieve carbon neutrality in Korea, and the evolution of the Korean startup landscape. Another panel discussion which was moderated by Robert Smith, Partner of EY Han Young including the speakers also explored key opportunities and risks in doing business in Korea.

- 제5회 암참 국내 기업환경 세미나 2023 개최 -  

2023년 03월 29일 – 주한미국상공회의소 (암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 금일 오전 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 ‘국내 기업환경 세미나 2023’ (AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2023)를 개최했다. 

올해로 5회째를 맞는 암참의 이번 ‘국내 기업환경 세미나’에는 한·미 정부 관계자 및 국내·외 기업 대표 다수가 참석한 가운데, 한미동맹 70주년에 걸맞은 화려한 라인업으로 꾸려졌다. 이번 세미나는 ‘대한민국, 아시아 제1의 비즈니스 허브로 가는 길’을 부제로, 글로벌 기업에 있어 명실공히 역내(域內) 최고의 비즈니스 허브로 나아가기 위한 한국의 여정 가속화와 국가 경쟁력 강화를 위해 한국 정부가 고려해야 할 정책·제도 등의 핵심 사안을 검토하기 위해 마련되었으며, 세 시간 동안 산업별 발표 세션과 패널 토론 등이 다채롭게 이어졌다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 “오는 4월 한미 정상회담은 대한민국이 진정한 글로벌 리더로 부상하는 데에 있어 매우 중요한 분수령이 될 수 있다.”고 말하며, “암참은 한국 경제를 최첨단 기술과 혁신을 주도하는 디지털 강국으로 변화시키려는 윤석열 대통령의 비전을 전적으로 지지한다.”고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어, “오늘 세미나가 역내(域內) 비즈니스 허브로서 혁신과 성장을 주도해 나갈 한국의 잠재력 발현을 위한 밑거름이 되고 한·미 양국간의 파트너십 강화에 더 없이 좋은 기회가 되어 줄 것으로 확신한다.” 라고 말했다.  

이 날 세미나에는 특별히 이창양 산업통상자원부 장관, 필립 골드버그 주한미국대사, 유정복 인천시장이 참석하여 축사를 맡아주었으며, 오세훈 서울시장도 비디오 축사를 통해 한·미 협력 강화에 대한 의지를 다졌다.  이창양 산업부 장관은 축사를 통해, “최근 글로벌 통상환경은 급변하고 있다. 특히 첨단산업 공급망을 재편을 위해 각국은 국가적 역량을 쏟아붓고 있으며, 한·미 양국은 경제안보 동맹으로서 그 어느 때보다 긴밀해질 필요가 있다.”라고 말하며, “한·미 양국은 공동의 핵심가치 증진을 위해 노력해 왔으며 최근의 시대적 과제인 첨단산업 육성과 공급망 구축을 추진을 위한 최적의 협력 파트너.” 라고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어, “한국 정부는 기업 투자와 외투 유치를 위한 총력 지원체계를 마련하는 등의 다양한 노력을 통해 한국을 세계에서 가장 투자하기 좋은 ‘투자특국’으로 기업들이 과감하게 미래 투자를 계획할 수 있는 나라로 만들어 가겠다.” 고 강조하며, 한국경제에 대한 흔들림 없는 신뢰를 당부했다.   

축사에 이어 삼일회계법인 부대표 헨리 안 암참 이사회 의장은 국내에서 경영 활동을 펼치고 있는 글로벌 기업의 시각에서 바라본 국내 경영 환경과 개선이 필요한 분야 파악을 위해 올 초 암참 회원사를 대상으로 한 ‘국내 경영 환경 설문조사’ 결과를 심층 분석했다.  

그는 또한 이어, 역내(域內) 비즈니스 중심지로서 한국의 경쟁력 제고를 위해 ▲조세환경 개선을 통한 법인세와 외국인 소득세율 부문 경쟁력 강화, ▲노동시장의 유연성 확보, ▲개인 정보 보호 및 데이터 관련 정책의 탈규제를 통한 국경 간 데이터 이동 촉진, ▲금융 서비스 관련 국내 고유 규제 완화 및 국제적 기준 부합 필요, ▲CEO의 리스크 완화, ▲IP(지적재산권)보호, ▲재생 에너지 접근성, 여성의 경제 참여도 강화 및 기업 정보 공시 확대를 통한 한국의 ESG 관련 지위 강화를 포함하는 7가지 핵심 정책을 제언했다.  

세미나의 또 다른 하이라이트는 암참 미래의동반자재단 제프리 존스 이사장이 좌장을 맡은 특별 좌담으로, 쿠팡의 판카즈 스리바스타바 부사장 겸 글로벌 비즈니스 운영 책임자, 존슨앤드존슨 오진영 북아시아지역 총괄사장, 델타항공 제프 무마우 아시아 태평양 총괄이 패널로 참석한 가운데, ‘한국, 혁신(Innovation)의 중심시로의 가속화’를 주제로 다양한 의견을 주고받았다.   

이후 이어진 발표 세션에서는 인천광역시, 에이스손해보험 (처브), 퍼솔켈리 코리아, 김·장 법률사무소, 알토스벤처스, 코딧에서 각각 연사로 참여하여 인천시의 글로벌 기업 허브로서의 마스터 플랜, 디지털 보험 혁신 측면에서 처브의 모범 사례, 조용한 사직 (Quiet Quitting) 세대를 위한 HR 필승 전략, 탄소 중립으로 가는 길에 기업이 고려해야 할 수단 및 정책, 한국 스타트업의 환경과 변화, AI 기술을 활용한 규제 리스크 관리 및 비즈니스 기회 선점 등을 주제로 다양한 현안과 관련된 인사이트를 나누었다. 또한, 이어진 패널토론에서는 EY 한영 파트너 로버트 스미스가 좌장으로 나서 다양한 산업군별 대표들과 ‘한국 시장의 기회와 리스크’를 주제로 심도 깊은 토론을 이어 나갔다.
