AMCHAM Applauds Ministry of SMEs and Startups and Google Play Partnership “ChangGoo Program”

as Exemplary Case of Excellent Cooperation Between the U.S. and Korea

- Role model for cooperation between U.S. and Korean companies via contributing to the growth and overseas expansion of Korean mobile startups -

February 28, 2022 – This afternoon, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) delivered a congratulatory plaque at the Ministry of SMEs and Startups-Google Play: ChangGoo Program-Phase 4 Program launch ceremony to applaud this exemplary case of excellent cooperation between the U.S. and Korea.

Held at the Google Startup Campus, this event was attended by representatives of AMCHAM, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, Google Korea, Growing Seeds and Silverlake Investment to celebrate the launch of the ChangGoo Program-Phase 4 Program. Derived from the “Chang” of the MSS’s “Chang-up” startup support program and “Goo” from Google Play’s program to support the overseas expansion of app and game developer startups, the “ChangGoo” program marks its fourth anniversary this year as a “Scale-Up” program that helps domestic startups accelerate their growth beyond start-ups.

James Kim, Chairman and CEO of AMCHAM, emphasized the importance of partnership between Korean SMEs and global companies. “Since its launch in 2019, the ‘ChangGoo’ Program has greatly contributed to the growth and overseas expansion of Korean mobile startups through the close cooperation between Korean startups, the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, and Google Korea.” He added, “American companies have long valued Korea's innovative partnership with SMEs. The strong network of customers, customers, and suppliers owned by small and medium-sized companies is the core of business success in Korea. American companies have helped Korean SMEs thrive and contributed to the economic growth of Korea by providing investment, innovation, and jobs.” He continued, “One of AMCHAM’s key missions is to help U.S. and Korean SMEs expand into each market. In addition to actively supporting the growth and active investment activities of SMEs in Korea and the U.S., AMCHAM will work closely with member companies and the governments of both countries.”

KyoungHoon Harrison Kim, Country Director of Google Korea, said, “Starting with the humble idea of helping innovative startups in 2019, the ‘ChangGoo’ Program has developed over the years to become the model accelerator program in Korea. Like the name ‘ChanGoo,’ we will create a bigger stage for Korean startups and develop a genuine support program that sets the stage for a leap forward.” He added, “We pledge to continue to cooperate with the Korean government, including the Ministry of SMEs and Startups and Changjinwon, to further develop the Korean start-up ecosystem.”

주한미국상공회의소, 한미우수협력사례로중기부-구글플레이 협업 ‘창구 프로그램’ 선정

- 한국 모바일 스타트업의 성장과 해외 진출에 이바지함으로써, 한·미 기업간 협력에 귀감 -

2022년 02월 28일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 오후 창구 4기 출범식 및 한미우수협력사례 선정 기념 간담회에 참석하여 기념패를 전달하였다.

구글 스타트업 캠퍼스에서 개최된 이날 간담회는 암참, 중소기업벤처부(중기부; 권칠승 장관), 구글코리아, 자라나는 씨앗, 실버레이크 인베스트먼트의 주요 관계자가 참석한 가운데, 창구 4기 출범을 축하하고 프로그램의 성공을 기원하기 위해 마련되었다. 중기부의 ‘창’업도약패키지 지원사업과 앱·게임 개발사(스타트업)의 해외 진출을 지원하는 ‘구’글플레이에서 각각 앞 글자(창+구)를 따온 ‘창구’ 프로그램은 스타트업(start-up)을 넘어 국내 스타트업의 성장 가속화를 돕는 ‘스케일업(Scale-Up)’ 프로그램으로 올해로 벌써 4기째를 맞는다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 먼저 글로벌 기업과 한국 중소기업 간 파트너십의 중요성을 강조하면서, “창구 프로그램은 2019년 출범 이래 국내 스타트업과 중기부, 구글코리아와의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 한국 모바일 스타트업의 성장과 해외 진출에 크게 이바지함으로써 한·미 기업간 협력에 귀감이 되었다.”고 말하며 기념패를 전달하였다. 그는 또한, “미국 기업들은 오랫동안 한국의 혁신적인 중소기업과의 파트너십을 가치 있게 여겨오고 있으며, 중소기업이 보유하고 있는 거래처, 고객, 공급업체의 끈끈한 네트워크가 한국 內 사업 성공의 핵심” 이라고 말했다. 그는 이어, “미국 기업들은 이에 화답하듯 투자와 혁신, 일자리를 제공함으로써 한국 중소 기업의 번창을 돕고 대한민국의 경제 성장에 이바지해왔다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 이어 그는, “암참의 큰 사명 중 하나는 한·미 중소기업의 양국 진출을 돕는 것이다.”고 말하며, “앞으로도 암참은 한·미 중소기업의 성장과 활발한 투자 활동을 적극 지원하며, 암참 회원사 및 양국 정부와도 긴밀히 협력하여 나가겠다.” 라고 밝혔다.

구글코리아 김경훈 사장은 "2019년 혁신 스타트업을 돕겠다는 작은 아이디어에서 출발한 창구프로그램이 해를 거듭할수록 발전해 한국의 대표적인 액셀러레이터 프로그램으로 자리매김하고 있다.”며 “창구라는 이름처럼 한국 스타트업에게 더 큰 무대를 향한 문을 열어주고 도약의 발판을 마련하는 진정성 있는 지원프로그램으로 가꾸어 나갈 것"이라고 밝혔다. 또한 “대한민국 창업 생태계 발전을 위해 앞으로도 중기부, 창진원을 비롯한 대한민국 정부와 지속적으로 협력할 것을 약속한다"로 환영사를 마무리했다.
