AMCHAM Explores Ways Promoting Collaboration between MNCs and Korean Start-ups

with Minister of SMEs and Startups Lee Young 

To share AMCHAM’s business priorities to make Korea regional headquarters across Asia

 and discuss strategies for strengthening U.S.-Korea economic partnership

February 24, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) met Minister of SMEs and Startups (MSS) Lee Young this afternoon.

Representing the American business community in Korea, Chairman & CEO James Kim of AMCHAM, SVP and President O.H. Kwon of Qualcomm APAC, Area Managing Director, North Asia Jinyong Oh of Johnson & Johnson and General Manager Brandon Joe of PLUG & PLAY shared AMCHAM’s business priorities to make Korea regional headquarters across Asia and discussed ways to promote collaboration between global multinational companies and Korean start-ups.

“The Ministry of SMEs and Startups is working to promote overseas expansion to boost domestic venture startup companies' entry into the global market,” Minister Lee Said by highlighting its key initiatives for 2023. She added, “Today's meeting was a meaningful chance to explore ways to support domestic SMEs' entry into the U.S. and other mutually beneficial collaborative opportunities with AMCHAM member companies. Going forward, we will continue discussions to bolster close cooperation.”

During the meeting, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim emphasized partnerships between global companies and Korean SMEs. “U.S. companies have long valued their partnerships with innovative SMEs. Since the official launch of the AMCHAM ABC (American Business Center) Program in 2019, we have expanded our platform to SMEs to further deepen our commitment to bringing more SMEs from the U.S. to Korea and vice versa.”

He continued, “AMCHAM is one of the strongest supporters of the U.S.-Korea economic partnership. Given the potential synergy between U.S. and Korean companies, AMCHAM remains very optimistic about future economic cooperation and trade relations between the two countries. We look forward to working closely with the Korean Government to make our vision a reality.”

글로벌 다국적 기업과 국내 스타트업 간 협업 활성화 방안 모색

2023년 02월 24일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오후 이영 중소벤처기업부 장관을 예방하였다.

이번 차담회에는 주한 미국 재계를 대표하여 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와 권오형 퀄컴 본사 수석 부사장 겸 아태지역 총괄 사장, 오진용 존슨앤드존슨메디컬 대표이사/북아시아지역 총괄 사장, 조용준 플러그앤플레이 대표이사가 참석한 가운데, 대한민국을 아시아 최고의 외투 허브로 만들기 위한 글로벌 기업의 비즈니스 우선순위를 공유하고 글로벌 다국적 기업과 국내 스타트업 간 협업 활성화 방안을 모색했다.  

이영 장관은 이 날 “중기부는 국내 벤처-스타트업의 글로벌 시장 진출 촉진을 위한 해외 진출 교두보 마련을 위해 노력하고 있다.” 라고 말했다. 그는 또한, “오늘 만남은 국내 중소기업의 미국 진출 지원 및 암참 회원사와 상생협력 방안에 대해 의논해 볼 수 있는 의미 있는 시간이었다. 앞으로 성과 창출을 위해 다양한 논의와 긴밀한 협력을 이어가겠다.” 라고 덧붙였다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 차담을 통해 “미국 기업들은 오랫동안 한국의 혁신적인 중소기업과의 파트너십을 가치 있게 여겨오고 있다.”라고 말하며 글로벌 기업과 한국 중소기업 간 파트너십의 중요성을 강조하였다. 그는 이어, “2019년 ABC 프로그램 공식 출범 후 암참은 중소기업으로 플랫폼을 확장해 보다 많은 미국 중소기업이 한국 시장에 진출하고, 반대로 한국의 중소기업도 미국 시장에 보다 쉽게 진출할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.” 덧붙였다. 그는 또한, “암참은 한미동맹의 가장 강력한 지지자로 한·미 기업 간의 잠재적인 시너지 효과를 고려할 때 암참은 향후 양국의 경제 협력과 무역 관계에 대해 매우 낙관적이다.” 라고 말하며, “우리의 비전을 실현시키기 위해 앞으로도 한국 정부와 긴밀히 협력하여 나갈 것.” 이라고 말했다.
