Through these meetings, the delegation will advocate Korea as an important economic partner to the United States.

This year’s delegates consist of James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman and current President, CEO and Chairman of GM Korea, John Schuldt, President of AMCHAM Korea, David Ruch, Former Chairman of AMCHAM Korea and Country Manager of United Airlines, Inc., Jeffrey Jones, Former Chairman of AMCHAM Korea and Chairman of the Partners for the Future Foundation, Swami Raote, Area Vice President, North Asia of Johnson & Johnson Medical, and Inbom Choi, Special Advisor of AMCHAM Korea and Advisor of GE Korea.

The delegates have secured 30+ meetings involving senior officials and policy makers from the White House, Departments of State, Commerce, Treasury, U.S. Trade Representative, Federal Trade Commission and other research institutes.  The delegation will provide updates on progress made to date involving recent regulatory reforms initiated by President Park Administration.  They will also discuss Korean government’s commitment and continuing efforts in deregulation along with labor reforms which will ultimately help make Korea much more competitive.  In addition, the delegates will discuss opportunities to improve transparency and predictability as an engine for increasing foreign direct investment.  And lastly, the delegates will also showcase the benefits and success stories of KORUS FTA, pending issues and the discussions pertaining to Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP).

James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman, stated that, “the “Doorknock” trip this year is especially timely and significant with the U.S. presidential election season in full motion.  It is our mission to help both the U.S. and Korean governments along with the business communities to fully understand the value of strong trade and economic partnership between the countries.  AMCHAM Korea will continue our efforts as the catalyst in strengthening the “win-win” partnership of both nations.”

About AMCHAM Doorknock

Since 1985, a delegation from the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) has visited Washington D.C. and on some occasions, New York, and other cities every year to meet with senior officials and policy makers to inform and discuss issues affecting U.S. companies doing business in Korea.  These visits, also known as “Doorknock,” are designed to draw key officials and policy makers’ attention on the economic relationship between the United States and Korea and highlight issues in bilateral trade and investment.  Doorknock serves to remind key U.S. leaders the importance of the U.S.-Korea economic partnership and resolve misconceptions that often arise from communication barriers, as well as the physical distance, between the two nations. Issues dealt with in the past include the need for Korea’s inclusion in the U.S. Visa Waiver Program and the passage and implementation of the KORUS FTA, among others.

About AMCHAM Korea

AMCHAM Korea was founded in 1953, with a broad mandate to encourage the development of investment and trade between the Republic of Korea and the United States. AMCHAM is the largest foreign chamber in Korea with around 800 member companies with diverse interests and substantial participation in the Korean economy.
