AMCHAM Navigates the Future of the U.S.-ROK Security Alliance with General Burleson and CDA Sakurai

 Exploring the key aspects of the U.S.-Korea alliance in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-ROK alliance and the founding of AMCHAM Korea

July 07, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted a special luncheon with Lieutenant General Willard M. Burleson III and Chargé d'Affaires (CDA) at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul Joy M. Sakurai at the Grand Hyatt Seoul Hotel today to explore the key aspects and importance of the U.S.-ROK alliance amid the fast-evolving geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape.

In his welcoming remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Given the rapidly changing geopolitical and geoeconomic landscape in our region, closer bilateral cooperation and engagement between the U.S. and Korea are essential to address key global security issues.” He continued, “In this regard, we owe a great debt of gratitude to the exceptional leadership of the United States Forces Korea (USFK) and the U.S. Embassy Seoul. Their dedication and tireless service have laid the foundation for a sustainable business environment and enabled the prosperity of economic and cultural exchanges.”

He added, “At AMCHAM, we take our mission seriously: to support the U.S. businesses to thrive in Korea and to facilitate greater Korean investments in the U.S. As a bridge builder between the U.S. and Korea, AMCHAM will continue to work closely with the U.S. Embassy Seoul and our other partners to deliver on our mission.”

Following General Burleson and CDA Sakurai’s keynote speech, the event featured a 2:1 Fireside Chat with AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim. The tripartite dialogue addressed critical topics between the two countries such as notable achievements, opportunities and risks of the U.S.-Korea alliance, challenges posed by North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, implications of geopolitical dynamics surrounding China and Russia, the economic cooperation within the alliance, and trilateral partnership between the U.S., ROK, and Japan.

Furthermore, General Burleson and CDA Sakurai shared their insights into important initiatives that global businesses are addressing worldwide, such as women’s economic empowerment as well as the most significant leadership lessons they’ve learned throughout the various carriers spanning multiple continents.

With various corporate representatives in attendance, including members of the AMCHAM Board of Governors, the event offered an in-depth dialogues and insights on the present and future of the U.S.-ROK security relations to boost the economy and further strengthen the U.S.-Korea economic cooperation.

한미동맹 및 암참 창립 70주년을 맞아 한미동맹의 중요성 및 핵심 측면 논의  

2023년 07월 07일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오후 윌러드 벌러슨 미8군사령관과 조이 사쿠라이 주한미국대사관 대사대리를 초청하여 특별 간담회를 개최했다. 한미동맹 70주년과 암참 창립 70주년을 맞아 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 진행된 이번 특별 간담회를 통해 암참은, 급변하는 지정학·지경학적 환경 속에서 안보를 축으로 하는 한미 동맹의 주요 측면과 그 중요성을 두루 탐색하는 시간을 가졌다.   

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 환영사를 통해 먼저, “역내(域內) 급변하는 지정학·지경학적 환경을 고려할 때, 한·미 양국의 더욱 긴밀한 협력과 협조는 주요 글로벌 안보 이슈에 대응하기 위한 필수 요소” 라고 말했다. 그는 또한 주한미군(USFK)과 주한미국대사관의 탁월한 리더십에 감사를 표하며, “그들의 헌신과 봉사가 지속가능한 비즈니스 환경의 기반 마련과 경제·문화 교류의 번영으로 이어졌다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어, “암참은 한국 內 미국 기업들의 성공과 한국 기업의 미국 투자 확대라는 미션을 수행하는 데에 언제나 진심으로 임하고 있다. 앞으로도 한·미 양국의 든든한 가교로서 주한미국대사관을 비롯한 여러 파트너들과 긴밀하게 협력하며 미션을 이행하여 나갈 것.” 이라고 각오를 밝혔다.  

윌러드 벌러슨 미8군사령관과 조이 사쿠라이 주한미국대사관 대사대리의 모두 발언에 이어 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와의 2대1 좌담이 진행되었다. 3자 대담은 한미동맹의 주목할 만한 성과, 기회 및 위험 요소, 북한의 핵무기 프로그램에 따른 도전 과제, 중국과 러시아를 둘러싼 지정학적 역학 관계, 한·미 양국의 경제 협력 및 한·미·일 삼자 협력 관계 등 양국간 주요 이슈를 다루었다.  

벌러슨 사령관과 사쿠라이 대사대리는 대담을 통해 또한, 전 세계 기업들이 다루고 있는 중요 이니셔티브 중 하나인 여성의 경제적 자립을 비롯 그간 여러 나라에서 체득한 다양한 경험을 통해 얻은 리더십에 대한 통찰을 공유하기도 했다.  본 특별 간담회에는 암참 이사진을 포함한 글로벌 기업 대표 다수가 참석한 가운데, 한·미 안보 협력의 현주소와 미래에 대한 심도 깊은 논의를 통해 한·미 경제협력 강화 전략을 모색하기 위해 마련되었다.
