AMCHAM visits Washington D.C. to serve as bridge builder

between the U.S. and Korean Governments

 - AMCHAM to resume the “Washington Doorknock” program between July 27 - 29, 2022

- Kicking off the program with the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall of Remembrance Dedication Ceremony

- The delegation has secured more than 25 senior-level meetings and to meet six U.S. Senators for the first time

July 25, 2022 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) will travel with a delegation of top-level executives from the AMCHAM community to Washington D.C. this week to meet with key figures of the Biden Administration and Congress.

After a two-year hiatus caused by COVID-19, AMCHAM will resume the “Doorknock” program this year from Wednesday, July 27, to Friday, July 29. Through these visits, the delegation will convey the value of doing business in Korea while sharing data that supports the benefits of the U.S.-Korea trade relationship.

The delegation has secured more than 25 senior-level meetings with officials from various sections of the U.S. Government Administration, including the United States Trade Representative, Department of State, Department of Commerce, Department of Justice, Department of Defense, and the White House. For the first time, the delegation will meet six U.S. Senators and three Congressional representatives across the aisle, all of whom drive important Senate and Congressional committee activities on Finance, International Trade, Commerce, and East Asia. The delegation will also engage with stakeholders from various think tanks and academia to share their on-the-ground perspectives.

The delegates plan to highlight the innumerable benefits of continuing the strong commercial relationship between the U.S. and Korea amid record-breaking investment activities between the two countries and the implementation of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) in the region. The delegates will also provide updates on the new Korean Administration’s initiative to build a favorable environment for foreign businesses operating in Korea. Furthermore, the delegates will advocate for more economic incentives to ensure a prosperous trade relationship between the two countries.

The Doorknock will kick off with the Korean War Veterans Memorial Wall of Remembrance Dedication Ceremony in Washington D.C. President Joe Biden and Secretary of State Antony Blinken are expected to attend the ceremony.

암참, 한·미 양국 정부 간 가교 역할 위해 美 워싱턴 문 두드린다  

- “워싱턴 도어녹” 프로그램 재개, 오는 7월 27일부터 29일까지 방미 일정 

- ‘6·25 참전용사 추모벽 헌납식’ 참석을 시작으로 사흘간의 도어녹 일정 시작 

- 역대 최다인 6명의 美 상원의원과의 만남을 포함, 25개 이상의 고위급 인사회의 참석 예정 

2022년 07월 25일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김) 대표단이 바이든 행정부와 美 의회 주요 인사와의 만남을 위해 이번 주 미국 워싱턴 D.C.를 방문한다. COVID-19 팬데믹으로 인해 지난 2년간 중단되었던 연례 ‘워싱턴 도어녹’ 프로그램 재개를 위해서다.   

오는 7월 27일 수요일부터 29일 금요일까지 (현지 시각) 예정된 이번 방문을 통해 암참 대표단은, 한·미 무역관계 및 암참 회원사의 한국 內 기업 활동이 가진 가치와 중요성을 美 의회에 전달하는 데에 방점을 두고 이를 뒷받침할 객관적 자료를 준비했다.  

대표단은 사흘간의 일정 중 미국 무역대표부(USTR), 국무부, 상무부, 법무부, 국방부, 백악관 등 美 행정부 각 부·처 주요 관계자와의 만남을 포함하여 25개 이상의 고위급 인사 회의에 참석한다. 도어녹 일정 중에는 또한 금융, 국제 무역, 상업, 동아시아 관련 주요 상원·의회 위원회 활동을 주도하고 있는 6명의 美 상원의원 (역대 최다인원) 과 3명의 의회 대표들과의 만남 외에도 싱크탱크, 학계 등 다양한 분야의 전문가 및 이해관계자들과의 회의에 참석하여 현장의 시각과 관점을 공유하게 된다.  

최근 연일 발표되고 있는 기록적인 투자 계획과 인도-태평양경제프레임워크(IPEF)의 출범 등 양국간 협력에 있어 긍정적 분위기가 조성되고 있는 가운데 미국을 방문하게 되는 암참 대표단은, 이번 미팅을 통해 그 어느 때 보다도 굳건한 한·미 통상 관계의 의미를 강조할 계획이다. 또한 새롭게 출범한 윤석열 정부가 공표한 국내 다국적 기업 친화적 환경 조성을 위한 정책 이니셔티브를 공유하며 양국 간 무역 활성화를 위한 경제적 인센티브의 필요성도 피력할 예정이다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 “한국의 새정부 출범과 최근 열린 한·미 정상회담, 그리고 한·미 FTA 발효 10주년까지, 2022년은 양국 관계에 있어 아주 뜻깊고 중요한 해이며 ‘도어녹’을 위한 최적기.” 라고 말하며, “한·미 양국이 공동의 글로벌 위협 요소에 슬기롭게 대처하는 등 역내 공동의 핵심 가치 증진을 위해 함께 노력하고 있는 만큼 양국의 강력한 동맹관계가 그 어느 때보다 중요해졌다.” 라고 덧붙였다.  그는 이어, “한·미 경제 동맹 관계가 포괄적 전략동맹으로 더욱 발전되어 감에 따라, 양국 정부 간 가교 역할을 하는 암참이 더 큰 역할을 해야 한다고 생각한다. 이런 맥락에서 암참의 핵심 미션 중 하나는 한국이 명실상부 역내 제1의 비즈니스 허브로 발돋움할 수 있도록 돕는 것이다.” 라고 말하며, “암참은 한·미 양국 경제협력을 더욱 굳건히 하기 위해 양국 정부와 앞으로도 긴밀히 협력하여 나갈 것.” 이라고 밝혔다.  

올해 ‘도어녹’은 7월 27일 ‘6·25 참전용사 추모벽 헌납식’ 참석을 시작으로 그 포문을 연다. 조 바이든 대통령과 앤서니 블링컨 美 국무장관도 본 기념식에 참석할 것으로 예정되어 있다.
