​AMCHAM Explores Win-Win Strategy to Establish Korea as Regional Headquarters

Ahead of Inauguration of New Government

- 4^th Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2022 -

April 21, 2022 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the fourth AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2022 on April 21, 2022, in a hybrid online-offline format. Distinguished guests, including officials from the U.S. and Korean governments and CEOs of foreign companies, attended the event.

Under the theme “Korea at the Crossroads: Key Innovation Agenda for the New Korean Government,” this year’s event featured presentations and panel discussions on priority reform measures that the incoming presidential administration should examine and suggestions for how to establish Korea as a regional business hub.

In his opening remarks, Chairman & CEO James Kim of AMCHAM said, “Today’s seminar presents all of us with a tremendous opportunity to envision Korea’s next leap forward as a major innovation hub. We will discuss how to take the U.S.-Korea economic partnership to the next level by making Korea not just a great place to invest, but the number one destination for U.S. companies’ investment in the East Asia region.” He added, “I am certain that today’s seminar will mark an important milestone in the cooperation between Korea and global companies for a stronger and more vibrant economic partnerships.”

With Foreign Minister Nominee National Assemblyman Park Jin’s special presence, the event also included congratulatory remarks by U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Christopher Del Corso from the U.S. Embassy Seoul, and Chairman and CEO Walter Cho of Hanjin Group and Korean Air.

Senator Jon Ossoff also delivered remarks. “I want to recognize all U.S. companies that are doing business in Korea. Many more can be persuaded to make Korea their regional headquarters,” he said. “I look forward to working with AMCHAM to expand commerce and investment between the U.S. and Korea. Fostering these kinds of economic linkage takes creative and forward looking and visionary policymaking.”

“Prior to the COVID pandemic, Korean Air flew more than 2.9 million passengers annually to the U.S., and subsequent to the onslaught of the pandemic, we have helped relieve the supply chain issues by increasing our cargo capacity to the U.S. to more than 900,000 tons in 2021,” remarked Walter Cho, Chairman & CEO of Hanjin Group and Korean Air. “We are committed to increasing our activity in the U.S. given the positive environment and we will continue to be a major contributor to the U.S.-Korea economic relationship.”The first part of the event featured a conversation with International President Stephen Dunbar-Johnson of The New York Times Company (“NYT”), who provided some insight into the relocation of NYT’s Asian digital hub from Hong Kong to Seoul last May. “When choosing a destination, we looked at factors like independence of the press, visas, schooling for our employees, ease of travel, and business conditions in the market. Seoul came out on top,” he said. “We are all very pleased with our experience so far.”

The highlight of the seminar was the Fireside Chat on the topic of “Policy Proposal for the Next Government.” Led by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, the discussion included speakers from diverse industries, including, Director General for Cross-border Investment Policy Jong-Yung Jung from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE), Managing Director Kevin Peters of MSD Korea, CVP & President Mark Lee of Applied Materials Korea, and Vice President-Legal Affairs Yung Sang Lee from Coupang.

During the Fireside Chat, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim shared the result of ‘2022 AMCHAM Business Environment Survey’ as Korea was selected as the second most preferred destination for regional business headquarters in Asia after Singapore. Panelists also explored policy directions and strategies for the new government to make Korea even more attractive FDI destination.

Speakers from Invest Seoul, GR Korea, Philip Morris Korea, Morgan Philips Korea and Solutions for Our Climate (SFOC) explore the current investment environment of Seoul such as explore the current investment environment of Seoul, the future of jobs, regulatory challenges of renewable energy businesses, and the next phase of the innovative economy.

The event also featured a panel discussion on the theme of “How to Unlock Korea’s Next Phase of Innovative Economy: Key Reform Agenda for the New Korean Government” with representatives from GR Korea, Morgan Philips and Solutions for Our Climates (SFOC).

주한미국상공회의소, 새정부 출범을 앞두고

대한민국을 아시아 최고의 외투 허브로 만들 상생 전략 모색

- 제4회 국내 기업환경 세미나 2022 개최 -

2022년 4월 21일 – 주한미국상공회의소 (암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 금일 오전 콘래드 호텔에서 ‘국내 기업환경 세미나 2022’ (AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2022)를 개최했다. 올해로 4회째를 맞는 이번 ‘국내 기업환경 세미나’는 한·미 정부 관계자 및 정재계 인사를 비롯한 글로벌 기업 CEO 다수가 참석한 가운데 온·오프라인 하이브리드 형식으로 진행되었다.

이번 세미나는 ‘새로운 출발선에 선 대한민국 – 새정부에 전하는 주요 혁신 아젠다’ 라는 대주제로, 대한민국을 아시아 최고의 외투 허브로 부상시킬 수 있는 방안 및 대한민국의 경쟁력 제고를 위한 우선순위를 모색하기 위해 마련되었으며, 산업별 발표 세션과 패널 토론 등으로 채워졌다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 “오늘 세미나를 통해 우리는 대한민국이 혁신의 중심으로 도약하기 위한 그림을 함께 그리는 놀라운 기회를 갖게 될 것이다.” 라고 말하며, “한국을 단순히 투자하기 좋은 곳이 아니라 미국 기업의 동아시아 지역 투자 1순위로 만들어 한·미 경제 파트너십을 한 단계 더 끌어올릴 방안을 논의할 것” 이라고 덧붙였다. 그는 이어 “오늘 세미나가 한국과 글로벌 기업간의 보다 강력한 경제 파트너십에 있어 중요한 이정표가 될 것으로 확신한다”고 덧붙였다. 

이날 세미나에는 박진 국민의 힘 의원 (외교부 장관 후보자)가 특별 배석한 가운데, 존 오소프 미 조지아주 상원의원, 크리스 델 코르소 주한미국대사관 대사 대리, 조원태 한진그룹 회장이 축사를 맡았다. 

존 오소프 미 조지아주 상원의원은 축사에서 “대한민국에서 기업 활동을 이어가고 있는 모든 미국 기업들에게 감사의 인사를 전하며, 앞으로 보다 많은 기업들이 한국으로의 아시아 지역본부 이전을 추진할 수 있다고 본다” 고 말하며, "암참과 힘을 합쳐 한미 양국 간의 무역과 투자 활성화에 기여할 수 있기를 기대하는 바, 향후 창조적이고 미래지향적인 정책들이 많이 만들어져 경제 협력 발전을 뒷받침할 수 있기를 바란다."는 조언을 전했다. 

또한, 조원태 한진그룹 회장은 축사를 통해 “대한항공은 COVID-19 팬데믹 이전까지 연간 여객 290만명을 미국으로 수송하였고, 팬데믹의 맹습 이후 2021년 기준 대미(對美) 화물 수송량을 90만톤 이상까지 늘려 공급망 문제를 해소하는 데 일조하여 오고 있다”고 말하며, “대한항공은 앞으로도 미국 內 활동을 늘려가며 한·미 경제 동반자 관계에 긍정적으로 기여해 나갈 것" 이라고 밝혔다.

세미나의 첫 세션은 스티븐 던바 존슨 뉴욕 타임즈 인터내셔널 사장과 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사가 인터뷰 형식으로 진행한 특별 담화로, 지난 5월 뉴욕 타임즈의 아시아 디지털 지부를 홍콩에서 서울로 이전하게 된 계기와 경험을 나누었다. 스티븐 대표는 담화를 통해, “지사를 설립할 때 중점적으로 고려되는 사항은 언론의 독립성, 비자, 교육 환경, 출입국 용이성, 그리고 시장에서의 사업 조건 등이며, 이러한 요소들을 종합적으로 검토한 결과 서울로의 이전을 결정하게 되었다.”고 말하며, “지금까지의 경험은 매우 만족스럽다.”라고 덧붙였다.

프로그램 중 가장 주목할 만한 부분은 패널 토론으로, 제임스 김 암참 회장이 좌장을 맡고 정종영 산업통상자원부 투자정책관, 케빈 피터스 한국MSD 대표, 마크 리 어플라이드머티리얼즈 대표, 이영상 쿠팡 법무 담당 부사장 등 다양한 업계 및 정부 관계자가 패널로 참석한 가운데 ‘새 정부의 핵심 개혁 과제’를 주제로 의견을 나누었다. 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 패널토론을 통해 최근 암참 회원사를 대상으로 한 ‘2022년 비즈니스 환경 설문조사’에서 대한민국이 싱가포르에 이어 두 번째로 아시아 지역본부에 적합한 지역으로 꼽힌 것을 언급하며, 새 정부가 한국을 더욱 매력적인 투자처로 만들기 위한 정책 방향과 전략을 모색하는 시간을 가졌다.

이후 이어진 발표 세션에서는 서울투자청과 GR코리아, 한국필립모리스, 모건필립스 코리아 및 기후솔루션에서 각각 연사로 참여하여 서울시 투자 환경, 대관업무 가이드, 더 나은 미래를 위한 올바른 혁신, 고용 및 미래 인재, 재생에너지 등의 다양한 현안과 관련된 인사이트를 나누었으며 GR코리아, 모건필립스 코리아, 기후솔루션이 참석한 두번째 패널토론에서는 차기 정부를 위한 분야별 혁신 과제를 짚어보는 시간을 가졌다.
