AMCHAM empowers win-win collaboration between global companies and SMEs for sustainable growth

 AMCHAM SME Collaboration & Innovation Summit 2023

September 7, 2023 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) the very first AMCHAM SME Collaboration & Innovation Summit today at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Featuring speakers from industry and academia, this event examined the power of collaboration under the theme, “Mutually Sustainable Growth through MNC and SME Partnerships.”

The summit kicks off with Congratulatory Remarks from H.E. Lee Jae-jung, Chairperson of the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee at the National Assembly.

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim highlighted the clear benefits of partnerships between global companies and SMEs. “Both MNCs and SMEs each offer their distinct and crucial strengths to these alliances, resulting in heightened innovation and superior concepts.”

He continued, “AMCHAM is determined to facilitate enhanced business opportunities for SMEs in both the U.S. and Korea. AMCHAM’s ABC and KBC programs are great examples of AMCHAM’s important role in this endeavor. He added, “AMCHAM stands ready to support both governments in driving inclusive economic development and fostering innovation on a global scale. We will continue working closely with industry partners to create an environment conducive to doing business for both SMEs and MNCs.”

Deputy Chief of Mission Joy Sakurai from the U.S. Embassy Seoul pledged the U.S. government’s support for collaboration between U.S. and Korean MNCs and SMEs to nurture sustainable innovation and growth.

In addition, expert speakers from various global companies shared strategies and best practices that drive economic development and foster innovation on a global scale.

Professor Emeritus Chae-Un Lim Sogang University’s School of Business and Chair of the SME Policy Forum at the Korea Academy of SME and Start-up Policy Initiative (KASPI) delivered a keynote speech on the theme, “Strategic Collaboration between Global Companies and Local SMEs: a Relation-Oriented Win-Win.”

In his keynote speech, Professor Kim said, “Due to deteriorating external conditions and sluggish domestic demand, it is a challenge for Korean SMEs to create growth engines. If global companies with international marketing capabilities and distribution networks collaborate in a way that opens opportunities for Korean SMEs with excellent technology to expand overseas, a win-win situation, or a ‘Positive Sum,’ is possible.” As an example, he cited Amway Korea, which operates programs such as “One for One” and “Global Open Innovation” to identify SMEs with outstanding potential and provide support in all areas from new product development to overseas sales.

President Hae-Chung Shin of Danaher Korea and Supplies Sales Manager Han-Su Yu of HP Korea spoke on the topics, “DBS (Danaher Business System): How Danaher Enables Sustainable Growth” and “HP Amplify Impact - A Partnership for the Sustainable Growth,” respectively, providing an in-depth look into how the two companies utilize partnerships to enable sustainable growth.

The event concluded with a panel discussion led by Director Kunn Richard Ryu at EY APAC MSGC. The panel included the keynote speakers as well as TASK Regional General Manager Kevin Dohwan Kim from Beckman Coulter Korea and Director Joosung Pang from Amway Korea.

주한미국상공회의소, 지속 성장을 위한 글로벌 기업-중소기업 간 상생협력 강화 방안 모색 

‘2023 암참 중소기업 협업 및 혁신 서밋’ 개최 

2023년 9월 7일 – 주한미국상공회의소 (암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오전 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 ‘2023 암참 중소기업 협업 및 혁신 서밋 (AMCHAM SME Collaboration & Innovation Summit 2023)’을 개최했다. ‘글로벌 기업과 중소기업의 협력을 통한 상호 지속 가능한 성장’을 주제로 열린 이번 서밋에는 학계 및 산업 각계 전문가들이 연사로 나서 동반 성장을 위한 글로벌 다국적 기업(MNCs)과 중소기업(SMEs)간 상호 협력이 지닌 힘을 검토해 보는 시간을 가졌다.  

행사는 국회 산업통상자원중소벤처기업위원회 위원장인 이재정 의원의 축사로 시작되었다.  

암참 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사는 또한 개회사를 통해 글로벌 기업과 중소기업 간 파트너십의 중요성을 강조하며, '글로벌 다국적 기업(MNCs)과 중소기업(SMEs)은 서로 각자가 가진 특유의 장점 및 강점을 공유하며 혁신성과 우수성을 제고할 수 있다.”고 말했다.  그는 또한, “암참은 한·미 양국의 중소기업이 서로의 나라에서 더욱 활발한 비즈니스 활동을 할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다. 암참의 ABC, KBC 프로그램은 중소기업 진흥을 위한 한·미 양국 정부간 협력에 있어 암참이 가지는 상징성과 주요 역할을 보여주는 좋은 예.” 라고 말하며, “암참은 경제 발전을 선도하는 포용력 발휘 및 글로벌 차원의 혁신 촉진을 위해 양국 정부를 지원할 만반의 준비가 되어 있다.”고 강조하며, 중소기업(SMEs)과 글로벌 다국적 기업(MNCs) 모두에 보다 나은 환경 조성을 위하여 다양한 산업 파트너들과 긴밀히 협력하여 나갈 것.” 이라고 각오를 밝혔다.   

주한미국대사관 조이 사쿠라이 부대사는 이어 지속가능한 혁신과 성장이라는 대의를 위한 한미 양국의 다국적 기업(MNCs)과 중소기업(SMEs) 간 협력에 있어 미국 정부 역시 힘을 보탤 것이라는 약속을 전했다.  

또한 이어진 식순을 통해 다양한 글로벌 기업에서 연사로 참여, 글로벌 차원에서의 경제 발전과 혁신 촉진과 관련된 전략과 모범 사례를 공유했다.  

서강대학교 경영대학 임채운 명예교수는 '글로벌 기업과 한국 중소기업의 전략적 협업: 관계 중심의 상생 모델' 이라는 주제로 기조연설을 진행했다. 임채운 교수는 기조연설을 통해 “대외 여건 악화, 내수 침체 등으로 국내 중소기업들이 성장 동력을 마련하기 쉽지 않은 상황이다. 국제적 마케팅 역량과 유통망을 갖춘 글로벌 기업들이 기술력이 우수한 한국 중소기업의 해외 진출 기회를 열어주는 방식으로 협업하면 모두에게 이득이 되는 ‘포지티브 섬 (Positive Sum)’ 차원의 상생이 가능하다.” 고 전하며, 대표 사례로 잠재력이 뛰어난 중소기업을 발굴해 신제품 개발에서 해외판매까지 긴밀히 상호 협력하며 일괄적으로 지원하는 ‘원포원’, ‘글로벌 오픈 이노베이션’ 등의 프로그램을 운영 중인 한국암웨이를 꼽았다.  

뒤이어, 다나허 코리아의 신해청 회장과 HP 코리아의 유한수 이사는 각각 ‘다나허社의 비즈니스’와 ‘HP의 지속가능한 동반 성장 파트너십’을 주제로 두 회사가 파트너십을 활용하여 어떻게 지속 가능한 성장을 도모하고 있는지에 대한 심도 있는 발표를 진행하였다.  

이후 이어진 패널 토론에서는 EY 한영 APAC의 류근우 상무가 좌장으로, 앞서 참여한 기조연설 및 연사들과 함께 한국 백크만쿨터 김도환 TASK 지역 총괄사장 및 한국암웨이 방주성 전무가 자리하여 해당 주제와 관련한 더욱 깊은 통찰을 나누며 행사를 마무리했다.
