AMCHAM Hosts a Special Meeting with Suh Young Kyung, Monetary Policy Board member of the Bank of Korea To discuss strategies for strengthening Korea-U.S. economic cooperation, exploring the economic outlook and major risk factors and understanding Bank of Korea’s monetary policy February 07, 2022 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted a special meeting with Suh Young Kyung, Monetary Policy Board member of the Bank of Korea, at the Grand Hyatt Seoul this morning. The event was organized to help global companies operating in Korea understand the monetary policy of the Bank of Korea so that they may develop appropriate strategies. At this event, Dr. Suh met with 50 U.S. and Korean corporate representatives, including members of the AMCHAM Board of Governors, to share her insights on the global and Korean economy for 2023 as well as key risk factors. In his welcoming remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “As we commemorate the 70th anniversary of U.S.-Korea relations and the founding of AMCHAM Korea this year, one of AMCHAM’s key initiatives is to establish Korea as regional headquarters in Asia Pacific. Given the robust infrastructure, human talents, and sound monetary policies, we believe Korea is well positioned to realize its potential as a business hub.” He continued, “We truly appreciate the remarkable leadership of the Bank of Korea and Board Member Suh Young Kyung in enabling sustainable economic growth for Korea.” He added, “While there are uncertainties and challenges in the global economy this year, we remain optimistic that the Korean Government, with its strong commitment to delivering economic reforms, will be able to navigate the economic landscape wisely. AMCHAM will also continue to accelerate its effort this year to promote greater economic growth in Korea.”Dr. Suh Young Kyung delivered a keynote speech on the theme of “Economic Outlook and Risk Factors.” She pointed out that the global economy will continue to face difficulties with global inflation remaining high and growth slowing compared to last year. However, global economic conditions have somewhat improved due to recent adjustments in the pace of monetary policy tightening of major countries, the ease of the European energy crisis and the recovery of the Chinese economy. She also mentioned that the outlook on the U.S. economy is mixed, adding that pessimists warn of a hard landing while optimists think a soft landing can be navigated, given the strength in employment condition.Dr. Suh predicted that Korea’s domestic economic growth is slowing, forecasting growth at 1.7% in 2023. She determined that this is due to a decline in exports and weakened domestic demand. Furthermore, she forecast that the Korean economy will face great uncertainty this year as overall employment conditions have worsened in both quantity and quality. Given the Chinese economy’s speed of recovery, increased household debt, falling housing prices, financial markets instability and widening gaps in interest rates between the U.S. and Korea, uncertainty in the economy is expected to continue. It was also analyzed that global supply chain issues will remain a challenge for Korean companies heavily reliant on exports as the global economic order rapidly changes its direction to becoming online and environmentally friendly. Dr. Suh highlighted that a structural weakness of the Korean economy that was revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic was the inequality in growth. She emphasized that the biggest structural problem the Korean economy faces is the change in demographics, which would cut into the country's growth potential in the mid- to long-term. In her final remarks, Dr. Suh said, “Going forward, the Board will continue to conduct monetary policy that contributes to stable economic growth through maintaining price and financial stability while thoroughly assessing changes of economic conditions at home and abroad.” ### 주한미국상공회의소, 서영경 한국은행 금융통화위원 초청 특별 간담회 개최 국내·외 경제 흐름의 특징과 전망, 주요 리스크 요인 등 검토 한국은행 통화정책 방향 이해를 통한 한·미 경제 협력 강화 전략 모색2023년 02월 07일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오전 서영경 금융통화위원을 초청하여 특별 간담회를 개최했다. 이번 간담회는 올 해 국내·외 경제 흐름에서 나타나는 특징과 주요 리스크 요인에 대한 면밀한 검토를 통해 국내 외투기업의 한국은행 통화정책에 대한 이해와 경제 전망에 맞는 대응 전략 수립을 돕기 위해 마련되었다. 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 진행된 이번 특별 간담회에는 암참 이사진을 포함하여 국내·외 기업 대표 50여명이 참석했다. 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 환영사를 통해, “올해로 70주년을 맞이하는 암참의 주요 미션 중 하나는 대한민국을 아시아 태평양 지역 본부로 발돋움 하도록 돕는 것이다. 대한민국이 가진 강력한 인프라와 인적 자원, 그리고 건전한 통화 정책을 고려할 때, 한국은 비즈니스 허브로서의 잠재력을 실현할 수 있는 좋은 위치에 있다.” 라고 말하며, “한국의 지속 가능한 경제 성장을 위한 한국은행과 서영경 위원의 놀라운 리더십에 진심으로 감사드린다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 그는 또한 이어, “한국은행 금융통화위원회의 노력과 경제 개혁을 향한 한국 정부의 의지가 있기에 험난한 경제 지형을 현명하게 헤쳐 나갈 수 있으리라 믿는다. 암참은 앞으로도 한·미 양국간 경제 협력 강화를 위한 가교 역할을 더욱 충실히 해 나가겠다.” 라고 말했다. “Economic Outlook and Risk Factors”를 주제로 하는 모두발언을 통해 서영경 금융통화위원은 금년도 세계 경제는 인플레이션이 지속되고 성장률이 전년보다 하락하는 어려운 상황이 이어질 것으로 전망하였다. 다만 최근 주요국의 통화정책 긴축속도 조정, 유럽 에너지 위기 완화, 중국경제 회복 등으로 세계경제 여건이 다소 개선되었다고 분석했다. 그는 또한, 미국 경제에 대한 전망은 엇갈리고 있다고 말하며, 비관론자들은 경착륙을 경고하는 반면, 낙관론자들은 고용지표 호조세를 감안할 때 연착륙이 가능하다고 보고 있다고 덧붙였다. 서 위원은 또한 국내 경제 성장세도 둔화되고 잇다고 말하며, 한국의 올해 경제 성장 전망치를 1.7%로 제시했다. 이는 수출이 큰 폭으로 감소하고 소비 회복 흐름이 약화된 탓이라고 분석했다. 고용상황이 전반적으로 양과 질 측면에서 모두 악화되고 있고, 중국 경제의 회복속도, 주요국 경기 흐름, 금리인상으로 이한 가계부채 부담, 집값 하락과 금융시장 불안정, 한·미 양국간 금리 격차확대로 인한 자본이탈 우려 등으로 향후 경제상황의 불확실성이 당분간 이어질 것으로 예측했다.또한, 세계 경제 질서가 온라인과 환경 친화적으로 빠르게 방향을 선회하면서 글로벌 통상 환경과 패러다임이 급변하고 있어 글로벌 공급망 위기는 수출 의존도가 높은 한국 기업에 여전한 과제가 될 것이라고 분석했다. 코로나19로 드러난 한국 경제의 구조적 약점은 성장의 불균형이라고 지적하며, 한국경제가 직면한 가장 큰 구조적 문제는 인구구조 변화로, 이는 중장기적으로 국가의 성장 잠재력을 약화시킬 위험이 있음을 강조했다. 서영경 위원은 끝으로, “향후에도 금통위는 국내·외 경제여건의 변화를 면밀히 점검하면서 물가안정과 금융안정을 통해 국내 경제의 안정적 성장을 도모할 수 있도록 통화정책을 운용해 나가겠다.” 고 밝혔다.

AMCHAM Explores Revitalization and Future Direction of K-Healthcare to Create Global Healthcare Innovation Hub- AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2022 - December 15, 2022 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the 13th AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2022 on Thursday, December 15, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. Representatives from key stakeholders from the Korean and the U.S. governments, academia, and industries to discuss the theme of “Shaping the Future of K-Healthcare.” This event was designed to encourage medical devices and pharmaceutical companies to contribute to R&D in the post-COVID-19 era, form a policy consensus between public and private sectors, and devise ways to further develop these policies. The event began with opening remarks by James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO. “Today’s seminar will explore how new technology is influencing healthcare, and how this changes Korea’s path to becoming a healthcare innovation hub. Now is the perfect opportunity for Korea to take the global leadership position in integrating this into our healthcare with K-Healthcare.” he said. He added, “While the COVID-19 situation has improved greatly, we must still be cautious. It will require global, coordinated action to drive forward innovations in pharmaceuticals, medical devices, digital health, and consumer wellness to ensure a full recovery from the effects of the pandemic.” He continued, “Through active leadership and strong partnership of the U.S.-Korea, we can implement measures to improve our collective global health security, bolster COVID-19 response efforts, and build capacity to prevent the next pandemic.” H.E. Kang Sun-woo, member of the Health & Welfare Committee in the National Assembly, said, “I hope today's seminar will help us set the direction to move forward by discussing industrial issues and exploring better ways to cooperate to strengthen the alliance by Yoon-Biden administration in the healthcare industry and beyond.” She added, “I will listen to the diverse opinions and alternatives today do my best to actively reflect them in our future roadmap.” H.E. Kim Heon-joo, Assistant Minister for Planning and Coordination of Ministry of Health and Welfare, said, "This year, the Korean government has been striving to promote international discussions in the field of vaccines and bio while also improving the domestic system and fostering industries for the future of the Korean health care industry. The governmental organizations related to health in both Korea and the U.S. have recently confirmed their consensus on priorities in the health care sector and are discussing strengthening cooperation in the future.” He added, “I hope that close cooperation between the U.S. and Korea will continue through technological exchange in the data field and joint research so that Korea can become a hub for health and medical innovation. Held in partnership with the Korea International Trade Association (KITA), more than 500 representatives from the U.S. and Korean business communities who are interested in trade and investment in the U.S. gathered to explore key success factors for entering U.S. business market. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “We have witnessed the development of the relationship between President Joe Biden and President Yoon Suk-yeol over the past year.” He continued, “The U.S. and Korea are very close trade partners, and changes in one country can have great impacts on the other. I hope today’s program will provide the motivation and insight needed to continue your momentum forward, especially on the implications of the U.S. midterm elections and how they can influence the future of investing in the U.S.” He added, “AMCHAM remains the strongest proponent of the U.S.-Korea partnership and we will continue to bring small, medium, and large businesses to the forefront of this alliance.” Kim Hyun-chul, Vice President for International Affairs of KITA, said, “Since last year, trade between Korea-U.S. has shown double-digit growth rate this year.” He continued, “As major Korean companies have announced large-scale investments in the U.S., subsequent investments are expected to expand significantly in the future.” He added, “Next year marks the 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. alliance, KITA will also actively support the expansion of bilateral exchanges so that the economic and security alliance between the two countries can be strengthened further.” Philip Goldberg, U.S. Ambassador to South Korea, also delivered congratulatory remarks, saying, “While the U.S.-ROK alliance is expanding into new frontiers that literally extend from here to space, there is nothing fundamentally ‘new’ about the core of our bilateral relationship.” He continued, “Our ironclad alliance remains grounded in deep personal ties and our shared history, values, and vision.” He added, “As the bilateral relationship steps into exciting new territory, a constant remains: our shared commitment to democracy, human rights, open societies, and free markets.” U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-FL) who chairs the National Republican Senatorial Committee (NRSC), also said in his special message, “My years running companies large and small taught me the value of a thriving economy and the importance of empowering entrepreneurs and businesses to succeed. Both as governor and now Senator of Florida I spent my career insuring Florida is the perfect place to invest and grow your company.” He added, “I trust the conversations you have at today’s seminar are just the beginning and look forward to hearing about your future success.” Under the theme of “Navigating a Changing World: Keys to Success in the U.S. Market Entry,” the seminar was divided into two sessions: “2023 U.S. Business Outlook” and “Corporate Mentoring Session.” The first session was kicked off with a presentation on “Major Issues and Economic Outlook for the U.S. Economy” lead by Joo Won, The Head of Economic Research Department of Hyundai Research Institute. Marking its fourth anniversary this year, the Doing Business in the U.S. Seminar 2022 is one of AMCHAM’s biggest annual events. This event was designed to navigate important trends of the blockchain ecosystem and explore its value across all industries. Held for the first time, the AMCHAM Blockchain Seminar provided a platform through which representatives from key stakeholders from the Korean and the U.S. governments, academia, and industries could discuss and share their valuable insights on the key theme of “Crisis in Confidence.” With about 200 people in attendance, the event began with opening remarks by James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO. “There’s no doubt that blockchain technology is an exciting development with the potential to revolutionize many industries. More and more companies globally are showing their determination to grasp and adequately apply blockchain technology to their operations and everyday life,” he said. “This is a crucial moment for Korea to decide how it will handle blockchain and what role it will play in the global digital asset market,” he continued. “In this context, it is critically important to create a sustainable regulatory environment where all of us can thrive long-term and find a balance between promotion and regulation.” H.E Lee Bok-hyun, Financial Supervisory Service (FSS) Governor, said in his congratulatory remarks, “As the Korean and U.S. governments strive to regulate digital assets, the role of private sectors in leading efforts to create innovative services that promote consumer benefits and create quality jobs is critical.” He continued, “As both Korean and U.S. companies have been leading the global industry trends together, we expect that cooperation between Korean and U.S. companies related to blockchain will be further emphasized given the cross-border nature of digital assets.” Partnered with Dunamu, crypto.com, Cumberland, Kim & Chang, Ozys and Polygan, this event explored a variety of topics in the revolutionary new space of blockchain, cryptocurrency and NFTs with major experts in the field. The seminar, which ran from 9am to 6pm, was divided into three sessions exploring issues related to regulation and promotion, technological development and business trends, and digital assets as investment instruments. Lee Sir-goo, CEO of Dunamu, delivered a keynote speech on the theme of “Proposal for Regulating the Korean Crypto Market: The Need for Categorization and Self-Regulation.” He underlined, “Crypto assets are developed to perform diverse tasks, and therefore can be classified under a few different types of categories such as payments, securities, network, and various utilities. Categorizing asset types will fill the regulatory blind spots. Operating a private self-regulatory organization group will provide breathing room for the industry to grow and eventually contribute to legislative decisions in Korea. It is important for crypto asset regulation in Korea to be flexible enough to align with the global standards.” Senior Foreign Attorney of Kim & Chang Yi Jong-goo followed with a presentation titled, “Toward Balanced Regulation in Korea for the Crypto Industry.” He said, “The new regulatory framework should strike a fine balance between supporting transformative innovation potential for digital assets and blockchain technology while protecting investors and establishing market integrity. A new independent agency to achieve these objectives should be carefully considered in light of the evolving nature of the digital asset industry and the conservative approaches expected from the existing financial regulators. The panel consisted of executives from 3M, PERSOLKELLY, GoGlobal GEO Korea Ltd., Incoaching, Human Dynamic, Shin & Kim LLC and Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI). ### 주한미국상공회의소, 포스트 코로나 시대의 HR을 논하다 - 2022 암참 HR 워크숍 개최 - 2022년 9월 21일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 오전 밀레니엄 힐튼 서울에서 ‘2022 암참 HR 워크숍’을 개최했다. 코로나의 영향으로 잠시 중단되었다가 3년만에 대면 개최된 이번 행사에서는 '새로운 시대의 HR'이라는 타이틀에 맞게 HR 영역 전반의 변화에 중점을 둔 논의가 진행되었으며, 공공 및 민간부문의 다양한 이해관계자 및 다수의 외투기업 대표와 HR 담당자가 참석한 가운데 포스트 팬데믹 시대에 보다 효율적이고 안전하고 생산적인 근무환경을 조성하기 위해 기업이 고려해야 할 요소에 대한 통찰력을 공유하는 시간을 가졌다. 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 “HR 워크숍은 암참에서 가장 역사가 깊은 프로그램 중 하나로, 매년 HR과 관련된 현안과 주요 트렌드에 대한 적극적이고도 유익한 논의를 촉진해 오고 있다.” 라고 말하며, “포스트 팬데믹 시대는 그 어느 때 보다 다양한 양상의 근무 방식과 디지털 전환이라는 특징을 가지고 있는 만큼, 이번 워크숍을 통해 우리는 미래를 향해 눈을 돌려 직원들과 동료들의 새로운 라이프 스타일과 우선순위에 적응할 수 있는 방법을 고민해 보고자 한다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 권창준 고용노동부 노사협력정책관은 또한, 축사를 통해, “현재 만 6천개가 넘는 외국인 투자기업에서 국내에 77만 개의 일자리를 제공하는 등 외투기업은 우리 경제의 주요한 동반자.”라고 밝혔다. 그는 또한, “대통령께서도 민간이 주도하는 지속가능한 일자리 창출을 강조하셨듯이 정부는 한국이 더 큰 기회의 장이 될 수 있도록 선진적인 노동시장을 조성해 나가겠다.” 라고 말하며, “이를 위해 고용노동부는 산업부, 코트라, 노사발전재단 등과 함께 외국인 투자기업이 한국의 변화하는 고용노동정책과 환경을 이해하고 적응할 수 있도록 지속적으로 지원하겠다” 라고 덧붙였다. 이번 세미나에서는 구글, 인코칭, 싱가포르 인적 자원 연구소 (SHRI), 법무법인(유) 세종에서 발표자로 참여하여, “다양성, 공정성 및 포용성”, “전략적 코칭 솔루션을 통한 조직 내 리더 역량 강화”, “커뮤니케이션 강화 및 직원 커뮤니케이션 전략”, “직장 내 괴롭힘 사건의 최근 쟁점- 관련판례를 중심으로” 등을 주제로 프레젠테이션을 진행했다. 이어진 패널토론에서는 MZ세대 구직자의 특징, 강력한 인재 확보의 핵심요인, 하이브리드 업무 환경 관리 등 HR 트렌드와 관련된 쟁점들을 심층 논의하였다. 이날 패널로는 3M, 퍼솔켈리, 고글로벌, 인코칭, 휴먼 다이내믹, 법무법인(유) 세종, 싱가포르 인적 자원 연구소 (SHRI) 임원들로 구성됐다.
