MSIP-AMCHAM Kicked off “Global Leading Companies Mentoring Startups” Program

June 14, 2016 (Seoul) ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) kicked off “Global Leading Companies Mentoring Startups” with the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning (MSIP) at the Seoul Central Post Office on June 14, 2016. AMCHAM collaborates with MSIP to launch this program in an effort to support Korea’s innovative startup companies to grow into global companies. 

The Global Leading Companies Mentoring Startups Program was established as a part of AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future (ACIF)’s new initiative. AMCHAM launched ACIF in October 2012 with the aim of promoting innovation and new business partnerships in Korea. ACIF’s motives aligned with Park administration’s focus on the Creative Economy initiative which is to “strengthen the role of ventures and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the creative economy and strengthen their ability to enter global markets.”

In this Program, 19 global leading companies, who are members of AMCHAM, will participate as mentors. The volunteering mentor companies from AMCHAM are 3M Korea; Adaptable Human Solutions Ltd; AIG Korea Inc.; Boeing Korea; Facebook Korea; Hewlett Packard Enterprise; IBM Korea, Inc.; Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices; Kim & Chang; LINA Korea (Cigna); Mahindra Korea; Medtronic Korea Co., Ltd.; Microsoft Korea Inc.; Minnesota Trade Office; Orne Haneul, Attorneys at Law; Susterra Partners Ltd.; Visa International (Asia-Pacific) Korea; Yulchon LLC; and Zuellig Pharma Korea Ltd. They will pair with 14 startups matched accordingly to the area of interest. These mentees were selected by K-ICT Born2Global Center (B2G Center) and Creative Economy Innovation Center considering their innovative ideas, technologies, and achievements. The matched mentors and mentees will meet regularly to discuss challenges and lessons learned to enter into global markets.

At the Kick-Off Event on June 14, Choi Jaeyou, the Second Vice Minister of MSIP, gave his opening remarks. In his remarks, Vice Minister Choi acknowledged that “this program will be a great opportunity to generate a positive synergy for the innovative startups by building a network with global leading companies that have top-notch technology and competitiveness in the market.” “MSIP will continue our support for startups to target overseas market even in their early stages and to grow into leading global venture companies.”

AMCHAM President John Schuldt remarked, “It is truly a great pleasure and honor to partake in this significant initiative for both AMCHAM’s member companies and startup companies in Korea.” He also commented that “AMCHAM and its member companies take high interest and actively engage in Korean startups and the Creative Economy. A powerful synergy is expected as the product of this collaboration not only between the leading global companies and Korean startups, but also between AMCHAM and MSIP. We look forward to developing and executing more programs like this together in the future.”

After the remarks, the event continued with IR Presentations and a discussion on mutual development and cooperation between leading global companies and startups. Following the discussion, the participating companies signed the Mentoring Partnership Agreement and networked amongst each other at the Meet and Greet.

Eric John, Chairman of ACIF and President of Boeing Korea, and Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation (PFF), a charitable arm of AMCHAM Korea, and Former Chairman of AMCHAM, attended this event with approximately 100 guests from mentor and mentee companies to celebrate the launch of the program.

암참, 미래부와 함께 국내 스타트업 해외 진출 위한 멘토링 시작해
-미래부-암참 ‘주한 글로벌 리딩 기업 스타트업 멘토링 프로그램’ 발대식

2016년 6월 14일, 서울 ? 주한미국상공회의소(AMCHAM, 이하 ‘암참’)는 미래창조과학부(이하 ‘미래부’)와 함께 6월 14일 서울중앙우체국에서 ‘주한 글로벌 리딩 기업 스타트업 멘토링 프로그램’의 발대식을 개최 했다. 이 행사로 암참과 미래부는 국내 혁신적인 스타트업 회사들이 글로벌 기업으로 성장할 수 있도록 도울 예정이다.

이 멘토링 프로그램은 암참 미래혁신위원회(ACIF, AMCHAM Council on Innovation for the Future) 활동의 일환으로 기획됐다. 암참 미래혁신위원회는 국내 다양한 산업 분야 및 학생들의 혁신을 독려하고, 한미 기업 간의 긴밀한 협력 관계를 발전시키는 한편, 한국 내 스타트업 및 중소기업을 지원하기 위해 출범했다. 암참 미래혁신위원회는 현 정부가 국정목표로 제시한 ‘창조경제’ 패러다임, 특히 ‘벤처ㆍ중소기업의 창조경제 주역화 및 글로벌 진출 강화’ 전략을 적극 지원해 왔다.

본 프로그램에는 글로벌 시장에서 성공적으로 각 분야를 선도해 온 19개 암참의 회원사들이 자발적으로 참여한다. 한국쓰리엠, 어답터블휴먼솔루션스, AIG손해보험, 보잉코리아, 페이스북코리아, 한국 휴렛팩커드, 한국 IBM, 한국존슨앤드존슨메디칼, 김앤장 법률사무소, 라이나생명보험㈜, 마힌드라 코리아, 메드트로닉 코리아, 한국마이크로소프트, 주한 미네소타 통상투자, 법무법인 오른하늘, 주식회사 써스테라, 비자인터내셔날아시아퍼시픽 코리아리미티드, 법무법인 율촌, 쥴릭파마코리아㈜ 등의 기업들이 자발적으로 멘토가 되기 위해 지원했다.

이 멘토 회사들은 멘티 회사들의 관심 분야에 따라 14개 멘티 회사의 전담 멘토로 배정된다. 멘티 기업으로 참여하는 스타트업들은 K-ICT본투글로벌센터와 창조경제혁신센터가 혁신적 아이디어, 기술 보유 여부, 창조경제 성과 창출 가능성 등을 고려해 선정했다. 매칭된 멘토와 멘티 기업들은 글로벌 시장 진출에 겪는 어려움과 해결 방안을 전수하고 배우기 위해 정기적으로 만날 예정이다.

6월 14일 개막행사에 참여한 최재유 미래부 2차관은 “전 세계적으로 창업 열기가 고조되고 있는 가운데 세계 최고 수준의 기술력과 시장 경쟁력을 갖고 있는 글로벌 리딩 기업과의 협력 네트워크 구축은 단순한 멘토링 지원을 넘어 상호 비즈니스 성장에 긍정적인 시너지를 창출 할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것”이라고 언급하며, “창의적인 아이디어와 기술력을 가진 국내 스타트업이 창업 초기부터 해외시장을 겨냥한 본글로벌(Born Global) 창업과 성공적인 해외진출을 통해 창조경제를 선도하는 글로벌 벤처기업으로 성장해 나갈 수 있도록 지속적인 지원을 확대해 나가겠다.

개회식에 이어 스타트업의 기업설명회(IR)와 글로벌 멘토 기업과 스타트업간 상호 발전과 협력에 관한 간담회가 진행되었고 멘토-멘티기업 결연식 후에는 기업간 자유로운 네트워킹이 이루어졌다.

에릭 존 암참 미래혁신위원회 위원장(보잉코리아 대표이사 사장)과 제프리 존스 암참 미래의동반자재단 이사장(암참 전 회장 겸 김앤장 외국변호사)를 포함한 멘토링 참여 기업 대표 등 100여명의 인사들이 개막식에 참석했다.
