April 18^, 2017 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the “AMCHAM Business Listening Session with the Honorable Michael Pence, Vice President of the United States of America” on April 18^th at the Grand Hyatt Seoul during his first trip to the Asia-Pacific. The listening session with the AMCHAM leadership was followed by the Vice President’s remarks to a larger audience comprised of 55 American business executives operating in Korea and leaders of prominent Korean businesses investing in the United States, and heads of large business organizations in Korea.

During the listening session, eleven AMCHAM Board of Governors members representing diverse industries gave short briefings on the current business environment in Korea. The attendees represented the aerospace, automobile, chemical, defense, financial services, pharmaceuticals, IT, transportation and tourism industries.

James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM and President and CEO of GM Korea, stated that “As a U.S. citizen, I am proud to be here representing American companies operating here in Korea. It is a true honor to have our Vice President of the U.S. Michael Pence with us today. AMCHAM maintains close ties with both the U.S. and Korean government to advocate for American business opportunities. As the largest foreign chamber and the ‘go-to’ organization for American companies, you can count on us.”  

After the listening session, Vice President Pence delivered remarks that expressed President Trump's continued commitment to U.S. alliances and partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighted the Administration's economic agenda, and underscored America's unwavering support for troops at home and abroad.

In regards to the on-going review and reform of all U.S. trade agreements, Vice President Pence reiterated that the U.S. “will pursue trade that is both free and fair” and the reviews are done “to ensure that they benefit our economies as much as they benefit our trading partners”. He pointed out that “a stronger American economy means a stronger economy for South Korea, and for all of our trading partners.” He told the audience comprised of both U.S. and Korean companies that the U.S. government values their inputs on the issues they face, and that it will work with them as KORUS is reformed in the days ahead.

Vice President Pence also thanked AMCHAM Korea, which has been active in Korea since the very beginning of the strong bilateral relationship, for “bringing together businesses large and small to invest in both our economies.” He praised AMCHAM for fostering “jobs and growth and prosperity on both sides of the Pacific.”

AMCHAM Korea was founded in 1953, with a broad mandate to encourage the development of investment and trade between the Republic of Korea and the United States. AMCHAM is the largest foreign chamber in Korea with around 700 member companies with diverse interests and substantial participation in the Korean economy.

암참, 마이크 펜스 美 부통령 초청 간담회 개최

2017년 4월 18일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)는 4월 18일 오전 그랜드 하얏트 서울에서 아시아-태평양 지역을 공식 순방중인 마이크 펜스 미국 부통령을 초청하여 간담회를 개최했다. 펜스 부통령은 먼저 암참 이사진과의 소규모 간담회를 갖고, 이후 약 50명의 국내 주요 경제계 인사를 상대로 연설했다.

이 날 소규모 간담회에서 펜스 부통령은 항공, 자동차, 화학, 방산, 금융 서비스, 제약, 운송, 관광 등 다양한 산업군에 속한 국내 진출 미국 기업 대표로 이뤄진 암참 이사진들과 만나 산업별 이슈 및 현황, 국내 비즈니스 환경 등 다양한 현안에 대해 토론했다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 한국지엠 사장은 개회사를 통해 “암참은 국내에 진출한 미국 기업들을 대표하여 마이크 펜스 미국 부통령을 모시고 간담회를 오늘 개최하게 된 것을 큰 영광으로 생각한다. 암참은 국내 미국 기업들의 비즈니스 기회 증진을 위해 한미 양국 정부와의 협력을 공고히 해왔다. 부통령께서 한국 내 최대 외국상공회의소이자 미국 기업들에게는 제일의 조력자(‘go-to’ organization)인 암참을 언제든지 신뢰하셔도 (count on) 좋다”고 밝혔다.

이후 펜스 부통령은 국내 주요 경제계 인사들을 대상으로 한 연설을 통해 아시아-태평양 역내 동맹 및 협력 관계 강화를 위한 트럼프 대통령의 변함없는 의지를 알리고, 트럼프 행정부의 경제 정책을 천명하며 국내외에 주둔한 미군에 대한 변함없는 지지를 표했다.

부통령은 현재 진행되고 있는 미국의 모든 무역 협정 재검토 및 개정에 관해서 미국은 자유롭고 공정한 무역을 표방함을 강조함과 동시에 무역 협정 재검토가 미국 경제뿐만 아니라 무역 상대국의 경제에도 혜택을 가져다 주기 위해 이루어지는 것임을 언급했다. “더 강한 미국은 한국을 포함한 모든 미국의 무역 상대국들에게 더 강한 경제를 가져다 준다”고 말했다. 이어 한미 기업으로 구성된 경제계 인사들을 향해 기업들이 겪는 고충과 현안에 대한 정보를 중시한다며 미 정부는 향후 한미 FTA 개정 과정을 기업들과 함께 밟아나갈 것이라 말했다.

펜스 부통령은 한미 수교 직후부터 한국 내 외연을 확대해 온 암참 회원사들이 기업 규모를 가리지 않고 한미 양국의 경제에 투자를 아끼지 않은 것에 감사를 표하면서 태평양 양안에서 일자리 창출와 경제 성장과 번영에 크게 기여하고 있는 암참을 격려했다.
