August 24, 2017 - American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the AMCHAM General Membership Meeting (GMM) with His Excellency Chung Sye-kyun, Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, at the Lotte Hotel Seoul on August 24, 2017. In attendance were around 80 representatives from AMCHAM member companies and government officials.

The event began with AMCHAM Chairman of Board of Governors Jeffrey Jones’ introduction of the Speaker Chung. In Speaker Chung’s opening remarks about “Measures for the Strengthening of Korea ? U.S. Relations and the Development of Korean Politics,” he highlighted the growing role of the Korean political world in the development of Korea ? U.S. relationship. He affirmed that KORUS FTA has become “the bedrock of our economic ties, and provides a textbook example and a good model to be followed by many other agreements.” He expressed his gratitude to AMCHAM for performing a vital role in ensuring close engagement among the two governments and member companies on the basis of the KORUS FTA.

Speaker Chung also outlined Korea’s numerous challenges ahead, including low GDP growth rate, high unemployment rate, widening inequality and climate change. Among these issues, he cited North Korea’s nuclear missile threat as one of the most daunting. However, he expressed his confidence in the strong collaborative relationship between the two countries. He remarked, “The rock-solid ROK-U.S. Alliance will serve as a fulcrum to open the era of peaceful reunification of the Korean Peninsula, going beyond deterring and denuclearizing North Korea.”

Furthermore, he highlighted the growing importance of the new Moon Administration and President Moon’s leadership toward a “new Korea.” Speaker Chung ended his remarks by encouraging the attendees to actively participate in shaping a prosperous, mutually beneficial future.

In the fireside chat that followed his speech, Speaker Chung and AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim covered various topics including the Moon Administration’s initiatives, the KORUS FTA and the Trump Administration, among others. When asked about the shift in Korean politics from a two-party system to a multi-party system, he remarked, “A multi-party system is more difficult to maneuver, but it is that much more sophisticated. It is also better for incorporating the voices and opinions of Korean citizens.”

When asked about the “Korea-unique Standards” that limit the global competitiveness of Korean corporations, Speaker Chung acknowledged the need for change and ensured that the National Assembly will take steps in the future to minimalize inefficiencies. Wrapping up the fireside chat, Speaker Chung once again emphasized AMCHAM’s important role in facilitating strong ties between Korea and the U.S.

암참, 정세균 국회의장 초청 오찬 간담회 개최

2017년 8월 24일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)는 8월 24일 오후 서울 롯데호텔에서 정세균 국회의장을 초청하여 오찬 간담회를 개최했다. 이 날 간담회에는 약 80여 명의 암참 회원사 대표 및 한미 정부 관계자들이 참석해 자리를 빛냈다.

본 간담회는 제프리 존스 암참 이사장의 정세균 국회의장 소개 연설로 시작되었다. 이어진 “한미 관계 발전 방안과 한국 정치 발전” 주제의 모두발언을 통해, 정 의장은 한미 양국 간의 관계 발전에 있어 한국 정계의 역할을 강조했다. 먼저, 한미 자유무역협정 (한미 FTA)와 관련하여 정 의장은 “한미 FTA는 한미 양국간 경제 협력의 초석이며, 이후의 협정을 위한 교과서적인 선례로 여겨진다”라고 밝혔다. 이어서 정 의장은 한미 FTA를 바탕으로 양국 정부와 암참 회원사간 긴밀한 협력 관계를 발전시키는데 핵심적인 역할을 수행한 암참에 감사의 인사를 표했다.

또한, 정 의장은 낮은 성장률, 높은 실업률, 불평등 심화, 기후 변화 등 한국 사회가 직면하고 있는 여러 가지 문제들을 언급하며, 이러한 현안들 중 “북한의 핵무기와 미사일 위협은 가장 염려스러운 문제”라고 우려를 표했다. 이에 대해 정 의장은 “견고한 한미 동맹은 북한의 비핵화와 더불어 한반도의 평화 통일 시대를 여는 지렛대가 될 것”이라며 강력한 한미 동맹에 대한 신뢰를 내비쳤다.

마지막으로 정 의장은 “새로운 대한민국”을 향한 문재인 정부와 문재인 대통령의 리더십의 중요성을 강조했다. 정 의장은 이 날 오찬 간담회 참석자들에게 모두가 함께 번영하는 새로운 미래를 만들어 나가는데 있어 적극적인 참여와 지지를 당부하며 연설을 마무리했다.

연설 후 이어진 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와의 좌담에서 정 의장은 문재인 정부의 주요 과제, 한미 FTA, 트럼프 정부 등에 관한 생각을 공유했다. “오랫동안 양당제로 운영되어 오던 대한민국 국회가 20대 국회에 들어 다당제로 운영되고 있는데, 두 운영 체제가 어떻게 다른가”라는 질문에 대해 정 의장은 “실질적인 운영 측면에서는 다당제가 양당제보다 어려우나, 양당제보다 더 민주적이며 국민의 뜻을 받드는데 효과적”이라고 대답했다. 또한 “다당제는 다른 정파의 의견을 수렴하고 합의가 결정으로 이어지므로 협치를 도모하기에 더 좋은 체제”라고 덧붙였다. 좌담을 마치며 정 의장은 한미 협력의 중심에서 지속적으로 노력하고 있는 암참의 노고에 감사를 표했다.
