The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and Korea International Trade Association (KITA) co-hosted the “KORUS FTA 5th Anniversary Seminar” at COEX Conference Room on Wednesday, March 15th. With media partner Joongang Ilbo, the event was held to commemorate the 5th anniversary of the ratification of KORUS FTA on the actual day it went into effect in 2012. Around 300 representatives from American and Korean business communities, as well leading academics from Korea’s top universities, attended the event to hear directly from key negotiators and related stakeholders of the KORUS FTA. The seminar covered the governments’ original intentions when conceiving the bilateral agreement, how the processes of negotiation and implementation affected the initial aims, as well as what the future prospects of the bilateral agreement will be. The event began with opening remarks from the co-hosts, Kim Inho, Chairman of KITA, Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation, and Former Chairman of AMCHAM, as well as H.E. Joo Hyunghwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy. In his opening remarks, Chairman Jones addressed, “AMCHAM will continue to be an advocate for both Korea and the U.S. to ensure ongoing prosperity, especially during this time of uncertainty and potential changes to come in the political arena.” During this remarks, Minister Joo thanked both Korean and U.S. business communities for their support and efforts for the full implementation of KORUS FTA over the past 5 years.” In Session 1, Chairman Jones led a fireside chat that focused on the theme of “The KORUS FTA: Its Objectives and Achievements” with two chief negotiators of the agreement: Wendy Cutler, Former Acting Deputy U.S. Trade Representative and Jong-Hoon Kim, Former Minister for Trade. In response to a question about its initial intentions and aims during the first meeting at the negotiating table, Ms. Cutler answered “When we first entered negotiations, we weren’t completely confident that it would be completed successfully but over time, it was clear that Korea was committed to implementing reform so therefore the commitment from the U.S. increased as well.” Mr. Kim added, “Whenever there were trade issues, it was a tit-for-tat kind of conversation but tried to change this conflict into positive energy and cooperation. We developed a common role that both parties could abide by and work within the framework of the rule.” In response to a question about the benefits of the KORUS FTA, Ms. Cutler answered, “The bilateral agreement added a strong economic pillar to the relationship that has great spillover effects and intangibles. For example, now when we go to meetings at the WTO or the G-20, we turn to our Korean colleagues and find them as partners.” During the second session, panelists comprised of Korean and American business community representatives and academia engaged in a multi-faceted discussion about the “Assessment of KORUS FTA Implementation and Success Cases Studies.” Dave Ruch, Former Chairman of AMCHAM and Country Manager-Korea of United Airlines, presented factual evidence about the benefits of the agreement and assessed the KORUS FTA as “the cornerstone of win-win relationship” between the two countries. Panelists including Sunny Park, Director at Corporate External & Legal Affairs of Microsoft Korea, discussed actively through panel discussion. After the seminar, AMCHAM and KITA issued a joint statement to recognize the 5th anniversary of KORUS FTA and affirmed their strong determination to further strengthen the Korea-U.S. economic partnership in years to come. On behalf of Korean and American business communities, AMCHAM and KITA assessed the KORUS FTA as (1) a growth engine to expand the mutually beneficial economic partnership, (2) a high-standard trade treaty that contributes to increased volumes of bilateral trade in goods, services and foreign direct investment into each country, and (3) a treaty which contributes to greater prosperity of individuals and national competitiveness of both countries. AMCHAM Member Companies Committed to Create Jobs for the Elderly and the Handicapped

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a Special Luncheon with Member of the National Assembly Na Kyung-won on Wednesday, February 22 at Conrad Seoul. Around 70 representatives from AMCHAM member companies attended the luncheon to hear directly from Assemblywoman Na Kyung-won, a trailblazer in the Korean government and the Chair of the Low Birthrate and Aging Society Special Committee, on today’s changing political landscape. Assemblywoman Na delivered a speech on “The New Chapter of Korea-U.S. Relationship amidst Current International Politics.” With the heightened political and economic uncertainty in today’s climate, she emphasized the importance of the KORUS FTA as the institutional platform for the deep-rooted alliance between Korea and the U.S. Assemblywoman Na maintained that for the U.S., Korea is the main gateway to the Northeast Asia and provides both strategic and economic value. She urged AMCHAM to take the lead role in advocating Korea’s interests and raising awareness about the mutual benefits of alliance and partnership, especially in regards to the Trump administration. Following the speech, a fireside chat was moderated by AMCHAM Chairman James Kim. Assemblywoman Na answered questions regarding various current issues in Korea ranging from low birthrate and the aging population to the problems that women face in the workplace. In response to a question about the government’s aim to solve the low birth rate, Assemblywoman Na commented that Korea's culture makes it difficult to have a work-life balance for parents. She highlighted that it’s important to create an environment where both genders can focus on their careers as well as child-rearing In regards to Assemblywoman Na’s comments on Korea as an aging society, Chairman Kim commented that AMCHAM member companies are at the forefront at creating jobs for the elderly and the disabled, and that AMCHAM is committed to partner with National Assembly in this matter. AMCHAM Relocates to Central Finance and Investment District in Yeoido

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) held an official ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, January 6th to mark the grand opening of the new office located at the IFC Building in Yeoido. The new office replaces the former office at the Trade Tower Seoul which was located in Gangnam. The event started with the remark address from James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM and President of GM Korea, who expressed a sincere gratitude for the leadership’s strong and continuous support to the Chamber. “This is a very pivotal moment in AMCHAM’s history. The new office, which remains at the heart of Seoul’s central finance and investment banking district, will function as a center for AMCHAM’s various outreach efforts, while also providing a brand-new and convenient venue for its staffs and members.” AMCHAM leadership including the Honorable Mark Lippert, U.S. Ambassador to Republic of Korea and Honorary Chairman of AMCHAM, Jeffrey Jones, Chairman of Partners for Future Foundation, Eun-Mi Chae, Managing Director of FedEx Express Korea, and Henry An, Senior Partner and Inbound Leader of Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers were invited to witness and celebrate this new milestone in the Chamber’s history. AMCHAM New Leadership Ready to Help Korea “win-win” with the U.S.

Mr. James Kim, President and CEO of GM Korea Company, was once again re-elected unanimously as the Chairman of AMCHAM. AMCHAM General Membership Meeting with H.E. Joo Hyunghwan

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the AMCHAM General Membership Meeting (GMM) with His Excellency Joo Hyunghwan, Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy (MOTIE) at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on November 29, 2016. Around 100 representatives from AMCHAM member companies and government officials including the Honorable Mark W. Lippert, AMCHAM Honorary Chairman and the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea, attended the luncheon to receive an update on Korean government’s trade and investment policies and to gain understanding on how MOTIE will promote economic partnership with the incoming Trump administration in the U.S. This event was especially significant, as it was held during these very transformative times involving Korea, the U.S. and the rest of the world. Minister Joo delivered a speech on “New Economic Partnership with the Incoming Trump Administration,” and underscored Korean government’s continuous efforts to deepen and broaden the bilateral economic and trade relations of both countries, and asked AMCHAM members for their support and collaboration. In his speech, Minister Joo addressed the “Bilateral economic partnership between Korea and the U.S. will step forward, as the KORUS FTA serves as a useful and constructive platform to drive economic growth and to resolve bilateral economic issues for both countries.” He added that “KORUS FTA has resulted in several positive outcomes, such as investment growth and job creation over the past 5 years since its establishment.” In addition, he stated that as a framework for bilateral economic partnership, KORUS FTA has contributed toward stable management of trade issues and that Korea will continue to cooperate with the U.S. through bilateral regulatory dialogue. He outlined 3 specific ideas on how Korea and the U.S. can cooperate on key elements of President-elect Trump plans to improve infrastructure projects in the U.S., manufacturing joint ventures between American and Korean companies and the benefits to Korea of moving forward with increased import of US oil and condensate product. During the fireside chat following the speech with AMCHAM Chairman James Kim, Minister Joo candidly answered questions regarding various current issues in Korea and around the globe, ranging from the incoming Trump administration to the Korean government’s commitment to reforming regulations and improving corporate environment. Minister Joo said that the Korean government will continue to address the business regulations unique to Korea in order for these to align with the global standards. He also mentioned that the government will continue to review how to make the Korean business environment non-discriminatory. In response to a question about the incoming Trump administration, Minister Joo commented that the new administration in the U.S. is expected to bring about new business and partnership opportunities and to deepen the bilateral relationship between the two countries. He asked AMCHAM to play a role as a messenger in bringing the two governments together. When asked about what AMCHAM could do to help the Korean government, Minister Joo answered that “AMCHAM has been playing a very important role in promoting the win-win economic partnership of both countries. AMCHAM Hosts “Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2016”

(한글은 아래 참조) November 18, 2016 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the seventh annual “AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar" on Friday, November 18 at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. Over 200 representatives from a variety of domestic and foreign healthcare-related companies, health organizations, government agencies including Ministry of Health and Welfare and Health Insurance Review & Assessment Service, gathered to share their insights through presentations and panel discussions under the theme of “Innovation without Borders ? Key to a Safer, Healthier Life.” The seminar aims to identify key policies and incentives for Korea to attract investment in innovation and enhance its global competitiveness. The event started with opening remarks from John Schuldt, President of AMCHAM, followed by congratulatory remarks from government leaders including His Excellency Chung Chinyoub, The Minister of Health of Welfare, His Excellency Yang Seoung-jo, Member of the National Assembly and Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee, and Marc Knapper, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy to the Republic of Korea. In his congratulatory remarks, Minister Chung Chinyoub addressed the 4th Industrial Revolution which lead healthcare paradigm shift from “treatment” to “prevention & management,” and stressed the increasing importance of innovation in IT and biotechnology industries. He mentioned that “Korean government will continue its efforts to implement policies that place improved public health as a core value. Chairman Yang Seoung-jo, expressed in his congratulatory remarks that “Healthcare is one of the fastest growing and innovative industries. Multinational pharmaceutical companies have greatly contributed to the growth of healthcare industry as well as the increased FDI and job creation in Korea. I appreciate AMCHAM’s efforts in creating an opportunity to analyze the trend in the healthcare industry and discuss potential opportunities for public-private partnership.” Through plenary session presentation, President Bang Yung-Jue of Biomedical Research Institute at Seoul National University Hospital noted that “Open innovation is necessary for maximizing R&D efficiency in pharmaceutical and medical technology.” He stressed emphasis on the collaboration among institutes, academia, hospitals and investors for better efficiency. In session 1, presenters explained about the costs and risks of pharmaceutical R&D and ways to promote R&D through bio-cluster. George Chen, Sr. R&D Leader of AstraZeneca, noted that “New drug discovery and development is a long, risky and costly journey.” Uloff Muenster, General Manager of Merck Korea, cited M Lab™ Collaboration Center as an example of partnership model among biopharmaceutical manufacturers, engineers and scientists to solve challenges and accelerate development together. Maeng Hoyoung, Director at Division of Trade Affairs of MOHW, then introduced the Korean governments’ policies and plans on new medical development R&D and bio-cluster. In session 2, presenters discussed about the new paradigm of healthcare for cost-effective patient access. Professor Jeong Boyoung of Yonsei Severance University Hospital introduced Cardiac Remote Monitoring System as an example of innovative technology that can help to reduce the unnecessary medical costs of patients. During lunch, Professor Lee Hak Jong of Seoul National University Bundang Hospital delivered the keynote speech of the day and emphasized the significance of R&D in healthcare industry. In session 3, panelists discussed under the theme of “Back to Basics: Ensuring Patient Safety for Better Clinical Outcome.” Jayant Giri, Physician and Associate Director of Becton Dickinson, presented about how innovative technologies can help to improve infection prevention, ultimately resulting in enhanced patient safety. The 4th AMCHAM Service Day

(한글은 아래 참조) November 4, 2016 ? On Friday, November 4, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted “The 4th AMCHAM Service Day” at the impoverished village in Gwacheon City. This year’s event was dedicated to support the underprivileged neighborhood that needs the most help of the community by delivering the coal briquettes. The AMCHAM Service Day is an annual event organized by AMCHAM’s charitable arm, the Partners for the Future Foundation (PFF). The previous three Service Days events were planting trees at Noeul Park in 2013, cleaning the Yangjae Stream in 2014 and participating in the Eco Flea Market in 2015. Prior to the main event, John Schuldt, President of AMCHAM, delivered the welcoming remarks to the participants. President Schuldt said, “AMCHAM Service Day is a great way to give back to the community who are less fortunate. On behalf of AMCHAM, I’d like to thank everyone for their participation.” On this special day, more than 70 employees from AMCHAM member companies, together with the AMCHAM staffs participated. Member companies including AIG Korea, Boston Scientific Korea, Hwang Mok Park, Kim & Chang, KKR, Lutronic Corporation, New Wrap Co., LTD, Praxair Korea and Yulchon LLC donated about 5,500 coal briquettes to the village. AMCHAM and its member companies have been actively engaging in various Corporate Social Responsibility activities since its establishment in 2000 in response to the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. AMCHAM Hosts “C-Suite Compliance & Risk Management Seminar

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the first ever “AMCHAM C-Suite Compliance & Risk Management Seminar 2016” with around 200 attendees on October 25, 2016 at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. With the enforcement of the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, the AMCHAM C-Suite Compliance & Risk Management Seminar 2016 aimed to provide AMCHAM members a better understanding of various compliance and risk management issues impacting businesses. The event started with the opening address from James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM and President, CEO and Chairman of GM Korea Company, who expressed, “Through this seminar, AMCHAM hopes to play an even greater role in improving business compliance and transparency while helping the US companies compete in an even playing field in Korea.” John Schuldt, President of AMCHAM, added on by introducing the seminar program, speakers and partner companies that helped organize the event: Kim & Chang, Lee & Ko, QUALCOMM Korea Ltd., Asian Tigers Mobility and Seoul Foreign School. The opening remarks were then followed by congratulatory remarks from the Honorable Mark W. Lippert, AMCHAM Honorary Chairman and the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Korea and His Excellency Sung Yung-hoon, Chairman of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission (ACRC). In his congratulatory remarks, Chairman Sung said, “Through the Improper Solicitation and Graft Act, we hope to provide domestic and foreign companies in Korea with a fair opportunity for competition that align with the global standards.” He assured that the ACRC would continue its effort to expand institutional and legal infrastructures to prevent corruption and promote anti-graft measures. During lunch, Kim Young-ran, Professor at Sogang University and former Chairperson of the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, delivered the keynote speech of the day.
