AMCHAM Improves Trade Environment with the Trump Administration

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a Press Conference on Doorknock 2017 on Wednesday, June 14 at the AMCHAM office to elaborate on the progress and achievements made during this year’s Doorknock visit to Washington D.C. in May. At the press conference, Chairman of AMCHAM (President and CEO of GM Korea) James Kim discussed the increased importance of AMCHAM’s role as a bridge-builder during this year’s Doorknock due to the new presidential administrations in both Korea and the United States. “We believe that this year’s Doorknock is AMCHAM’s most important in our history, especially given that we now have two new presidents,” said Chairman Kim. He emphasized that it is now crucial for AMCHAM to facilitate a clear and constructive roadmap that ensures stability and a win-win partnership between the two nations. “Having Hyundai Motors join us in this Doorknock also added a unique perspective regarding the U.S.-Korean economic relationship,” said Chairman Kim. “At each meeting, we were able to discuss the value that Hyundai has already created in the United States. In the future, we are going to expand our delegation to include a few more select Korean companies.” In closing, he reiterated AMCHAM’s commitment to serving as a bridge-builder between the United States and Korea. He urged the Korean government and Korean companies to meet with AMCHAM to discuss potential ways AMCHAM could continue this role. Following Chairman Kim’s remarks, Jeffrey Jones, Former Chairman of AMCHAM and Foundation Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation delivered in-depth remarks about the policies discussed at this year’s Doorknock, describing it as an opportunity to build upon the discussion that began with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence earlier in 2017 and advance a constructive relationship with the Trump administration. “Our main goal was to be a voice of fact and reason to the new Trump administration so that they can make appropriate decisions on the basis of those facts and see AMCHAM as a knowledgeable resource and trusted partner,” said Former Chairman Jones. He went on to suggest some measures that President Moon could implement to help alleviate much of the pressure on the KORUS FTA during his summit with President Trump later this month: a 10 billion dollar “Buy American Fund” as an expression of commitment to purchase American made goods; efforts over the next 10 to 12 months to resolve all of the outstanding KORUS FTA non-implementation issues identified in the National Trade Estimates report prepared by USTR; increase imports of U.S. sourced LNG ad shale oil from the U.S. into Korea; to include FMS sales in trade figures which is a reflection of actual purchases by Korea of U.S. manufactured defense related equipment; and to cooperate to increase the number of Korean citizens registered on the U.S. Global Entry Program eliminating the interview by CBP at the port of entry. Finally, David Ruch, Former Chairman of AMCHAM delivered remarks elaborating on the response from Washington D.C. and the state of the KORUS FTA. Former Chairman Ruch cited several issues that were addressed throughout their meetings in Washington D.C. by the U.S. administration, such as the trade deficit in manufactured goods since the signing of the KORUS FTA, trade imbalances that are compounded by KORUS compliance issues, among other imbalances in the strategic and economic relationship. He proposed ways to close the gap between perception and real performance of the KORUS FTA. “Overall, the KORUS agreement is working,” he remarked. “In 2016, 23 U.S. states had more than $500 million in exports to Korea, and more than 90% of all U.S. Congressional districts have increased their exports to Korea compared to pre-KORUS levels. There are areas for improvement, but we are seeing the tide raise all boats.” Around 30 members of press from both domestic and foreign media outlets were present at the Press Conference. They were able to participate in in-depth discussion and a Q&A session after the speeches. CEOs Serve Tables for AMCHAM Charity Night

(한글은 아래 참조) June 4, 2017 (Seoul) ? American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted “The 13th AMCHAM CEO Servers Night” at Conrad Seoul on Friday, June 2nd, 2017. For this event, 8 CEOs of AMCHAM member companies received dinner service training by hotel staff, and served food and wine to their employees, business partners and friends. Hosted annually by AMCHAM’s charitable arm, The Partners for the Future Foundation (PFF) since 2003, the event aims to raise scholarship funds for university students from families with financial difficulties. James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman and President and CEO of GM Korea, and Jeffrey Jones, Foundation Chairman of the Partners for the Future Foundation, kicked off the event by welcoming guests. In his opening statements, Chairman Kim said, “This meaningful event has been successful for several years and I am proud to say that we have established a unique fundraising custom in Korea. It is important to engage in various corporate social responsibility activities.” Foundation Chairman Jones, Chairman of PFF stated in his opening remarks, “This is my 13th participation to AMCHAM CEO Servers’ Night and I am excited to be here this year as well.” Around 120 guests attended the event and were able to enjoy a four-course meal. AMCHAM Concludes Meetings with Trump Administration and Key Figures in Washington D.C.

Leaders of the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) concluded their recent AMCHAM doorknock meetings in Washington D.C. from Monday, May 15th to Thursday, May 18th 2017. During the visit, the delegation met with key officials of the Trump Administration, Congress and policy think tanks to discuss issues critical to the Korea-U.S. relationship. The AMCHAM delegation held more than 50 senior-level meetings over the 4 days with White House officials, various administration and congressional leaders, and think-tanks to discuss the new Trump administration policies affecting Korea and the commercial and trading relationship between the U.S. and Korea particularly given the recent events in the region and President Trump's announcements affecting trade and the KORUS FTA. The objective of this year's Doorknock was to obtain a better understanding of the Trump administration's probable direction in respect of trade with Korea and to ensure the administration and congress have a fuller understanding of the depth of the U.S.-Korea economic relationship and importance of the KORUS FTA. An additional important objective of this year's doorknock was to ensure administration and congressional leaders are aware of concerns and problems faced by member companies doing business in the U.S. and Korea, including U.S. and Korean companies. For the first time this year, Hyundai Motors, a Korean member company of AMCHAM, joined the delegation to highlight to U.S. leaders the contribution of Hyundai Motors to the U.S. economy. Trump Administration officials and congressional leaders were appreciative of AMCHAM's advocacy on behalf of Hyundai Moror group and impressed with the investment of over 10 billion US dollars in the U.S. resulting in the creation of more than 100,000 jobs in the US. Hyundai Motor also confirmed its plan to make further investment of 3.1 billion over the next several years. This was the first time AMCHAM has included a Korean company in its Doorknock delegation. James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM stated, “Among the 4 visits to Washington D.C. during my chairmanship, I think this year is the most critical and dynamic Doorknock. AMCHAM Visits Washington D.C. to Serve as a Bridge Builder between Trump and Moon Administrations

AMCHAM Hosts “The 10th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” in Changwon City

(한글은 아래 참조) April 27, 2017 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) held “The 10th AMCHAM Innovation Camp” in Changwon National University on April 27, 2017. The AMCHAM delegates, comprised of 10 representatives from leading American companies in Korea, met with 200 university students in Changwon City to help strengthen their competitiveness in the global job market. Prior to the event, James Kim (Chairman of AMCHAM and President and CEO of GM Korea), Jeffrey Jones (Foundation Chairman of Partners for the Future Foundation and Former Chairman of AMCHAM), and participating delegates met with the Mayor of Changwon City, Ahn Sangsoo, and the President of Changwon National University, Hae Beom Choi. Mayor Ahn delivered a presentation promoting incentives for investment in Changwon City. Following the meeting, the main event began with opening remarks by Chairman Kim, Mayor Ahn, President Choi, and Foundation Chairman Jones. AMCHAM Hosts Business Listening Session with U.S. Vice President Michael Pence

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the “AMCHAM Business Listening Session with the Honorable Michael Pence, Vice President of the United States of America” on April 18th at the Grand Hyatt Seoul during his first trip to the Asia-Pacific. The listening session with the AMCHAM leadership was followed by the Vice President’s remarks to a larger audience comprised of 55 American business executives operating in Korea and leaders of prominent Korean businesses investing in the United States, and heads of large business organizations in Korea. During the listening session, eleven AMCHAM Board of Governors members representing diverse industries gave short briefings on the current business environment in Korea. The attendees represented the aerospace, automobile, chemical, defense, financial services, pharmaceuticals, IT, transportation and tourism industries. James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM and President and CEO of GM Korea, stated that “As a U.S. citizen, I am proud to be here representing American companies operating here in Korea. It is a true honor to have our Vice President of the U.S. Michael Pence with us today. AMCHAM maintains close ties with both the U.S. and Korean government to advocate for American business opportunities. As the largest foreign chamber and the ‘go-to’ organization for American companies, you can count on us.” After the listening session, Vice President Pence delivered remarks that expressed President Trump's continued commitment to U.S. alliances and partnerships in the Asia-Pacific region, highlighted the Administration's economic agenda, and underscored America's unwavering support for troops at home and abroad. In regards to the on-going review and reform of all U.S. trade agreements, Vice President Pence reiterated that the U.S. “will pursue trade that is both free and fair” and the reviews are done “to ensure that they benefit our economies as much as they benefit our trading partners”. He pointed out that “a stronger American economy means a stronger economy for South Korea, and for all of our trading partners.” He told the audience comprised of both U.S. and Korean companies that the U.S. government values their inputs on the issues they face, and that it will work with them as KORUS is reformed in the days ahead. AMCHAM General Membership Meeting with H.E. Yun Byung-se

(한글은 아래 참조) ?April 14, 2017 - American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the AMCHAM General Membership Meeting (GMM) with His Excellency Yun Byung-se, Minister of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul on April 14th, 2017. Around 70 representatives from AMCHAM member companies and government officials including Marc Knapper, Charg? d'Affaires ad interim of the U.S. Embassy attended the meeting. The meeting began with opening remarks from James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM and President and CEO of GM Korea and Charg? d'Affaires ad interim Knapper, delivered his appreciation for the close tie the U.S. Embassy and AMCHAM shares in strengthening Korea-U.S. relationship. Chairman Kim then introduced Minister Yun Byung-se, the longest serving Foreign Minister since the establishment of the modern constitution of Korea in 1987. Highlighting the importance of ROK-U.S. alliance to pave the way for durable peace and business-friendly geopolitical environment, Minister Yun shared his thoughts on the state of ROK-U.S. relations and the joint tasks ahead. First, he affirmed that “ROK-U.S. alliance has never been stronger over the four years.” In addition to KORUS FTA, which has brought enormous economic benefits to both countries, he cited a number of agreements and cooperation ranging from military to economy, that have reinstated the strength of ROK-U.S. relationship. Secondly, despite the change in leadership of both countries, he projected that the relationship between the two countries will “continue to remain rock-solid.” He stated that “the Trump administration puts high priority on Korea” and this is demonstrated through repeated positive developments, such as Korea being one of only nine countries he called within 24 hours of taking office. In his third message on how to deal with the North Korean nuclear and missile conundrum at this critical juncture, Minister Yun urged that it is “time to further solidify the strongest-ever international unity and solidarity against North Korea to achieve the complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization of North Korea.” He also expressed that close consultation between Korea and the U.S. would be the key in this endeavor, and “synergy between diplomatic pressure and military deterrence” would be vitally important. He ended his remarks by promising that the Korean government will continue its efforts to turn challenges into opportunities. His speech was followed by a fireside chat conducted by Jeffrey Jones, Foundation Chairman of the Partners for the Future Foundation and Former Chairman of AMCHAM. One of the questions was “What are you doing about North Korea situation and what will you tell your successor to do to avoid war with North Korea?” Minister Yun responded, “What we have been doing is to send the right message to North Korea through exercising diplomatic pressure and military deterrence to influence their mindsets to return to international community. There needs consistency in dealing with this issue, and people of new administration should be wise to continue what we have been doing and collaborate with American counterparts.” Minister Yun also asked AMCHAM to convey key messages from Seoul to congressional leaders during the “AMCHAM Doorknock,” the Chamber’s annual visit to Washington in May. The messages are that KORUS FTA is (1) a golden standard agreement for all FTAs, (2) a job creating arrangement, (3) and is mutually beneficial.
