February 5, 2020 (Seoul) ? On February 4, 2019, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted a Special Breakfast Meeting with Andrew Kim, former head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) Korea Mission Center, at the Lotte Hotel.

Held as part of a special dialogue series with key U.S. ? Korea government officials, this event explored the current state and future outlook of South Korea ? Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) relations. Andrew Kim described his experience coordinating the diplomacy between the U.S. and the DPRK. In a fireside chat with Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM Korea James Kim, Andrew Kim shared insights into the current status and future prospects of dialogue with DPRK.

“We are honored to have a figure of such stature and experience with us today,” remarked James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO. “Today is a rare chance for the American businesses in Korea to gain a true insider’s perspective on so many of the pivotal events and key figures in the U.S.-DPRK-ROK dynamic.”

When asked about the North Korean diplomatic situation and how it will develop moving forward, Andrew Kim said, “If 2017 was about managing crisis, this year focuses on managing risk. While North Korea may continue to take provocative action to assert their relevance, I do not think we will see a return to the crisis of 2017.”

Andrew Kim served for 28 years as an intelligence officer in the CIA. He established the CIA’s Korea Mission Center in 2017 to fulfill President Donald Trump's mandate to address the threat posed by North Korea. In this role, Andrew Kim was instrumental in organizing the historic summits between President Donald Trump and Chairman Kim Jong-un. He also accompanied CIA Director and then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to Pyongyang in meeting with the North Korean leader Kim Jong Un several times.

This Breakfast Meeting launches a series of AMCHAM special meetings with key government officials in the first quarter. Following this meeting is a Special Luncheon with Marc Knapper, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Korea and Japan at the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the Department of State on February 21 and with Kyung-wha Kang, Minister of Foreign Affairs, on March 9.

주한미국상공회의소, “한미 주요 정부 인사 초청 특별간담회 시리즈” 개최

2월 4일 앤드루 김 전 미국 중앙정보국(CIA) 코리아미션센터장 초청 조찬 개최 

2020년 2월 5일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)는 2월 4일 오전 롯데호텔 서울에서 앤드루 김 전 미국 중앙정보국(CIA) 코리아미션센터장을 초청하여 특별조찬간담회를 개최하였다.

“한미 주요 정부 인사 초청 특별간담회 시리즈”의 일환으로 마련된 이번 특별조찬간담회에서는 남북미 관계의 현주소 및 전망이 중점적으로 논의되었다. 김 전 센터장은 북미간 비핵화 협상에 참여한 경험을 소개하고, 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와의 좌담을 통해 남북미 관계에 대한 현 상황을 진단하고 앞으로의 전망에 관한 견해를 밝혔다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 "북미 비핵화 협상에 중요한 역할을 한 앤드루 김 전 센터장과의 대담을 갖게 되어 영광"이라며 "남북미 관계가 재계에 미치는 영향이 매우 크기 때문에 김 전 센터장의 경험과 앞으로의 협력방안에 대한 의견을 미국 재계와 공유할 수 있는 흔치 않은 기회”라고 말했다.

최근 몇년간 북한의 국제정치 동향과 앞으로의 전망에 대해 답변한 앤드루 김 전 센터장은 “2017년이 최악의 고비에 대응한 해였다면 올해는 잠재적인 리스크를 관리하는 해가 될 것"이라며 “존재감을 드러내기 위한 북한의 도발 가능성이 여전히 있지만 2017년과 같은 위기가 오지는 않을 것”이라고 말했다. 

앤드루 김은 28년 간 CIA의 한미 정보관으로 근무한 바 있으며, 2017년부터 트럼프 대통령의 대북정책의 선봉에 서서 미국 중앙정보국(CIA) 코리아미션센터의 초대 센터장을 맡았다. 앤드루 김은 트럼프 대통령과 김정은 북한 국무위원장의 역사적인 회동을 성사시키는데 핵심적인 역할을 하였으며, 마이크 폼페이오 미 국무장관이 평양을 방문해 김정은 위원장을 만날 때 스티브 비건 미 대북정책 특별대표와 함께 배석했다.  

암참은 이날 간담회를 시작으로 2020년 1분기 “한미 주요 정부 인사 초청 특별간담회 시리즈”를 진행한다. 오는 2월 21일에는 마크 내퍼 미국 국무부 동아시아태평양담당 부차관보 대행 초청 오찬간담회를 개최 예정이며, 3월 9일에는 강경화 외교부 장관 초청 오찬간담회가 계획되어 있다.
