March 05, 2020 (Seoul) ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a press conference to address the current status of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) on March 5. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim and Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors Jeffrey Jones discussed the current state of COVID-19 in Korea and the impact on the foreign business community as well as steps taken by multinational companies to return business operations to normal.

Chairman & CEO Kim and Chairman Jones recognized the Korean government’s proactive and transparent reaction to the virus outbreak and suggested that the high number of confirmed cases was due to the thorough testing procedures of the Korean government compared to other countries. Citing the more than 500 testing sites that examine 10,000 people daily, Chairman & CEO Kim and Chairman Jones commended the Korean government’s rapid development of innovative testing methods.

The AMCHAM leadership went on to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on AMCHAM member companies. Approximately 70% of AMCHAM member companies reported disruption of travel and the decline in purchases by customers or clients. About 40% of the companies also reported a disruption in supply and logistics as well as a lack of staff or the inability to return to work. As a result, only about 20% of the companies expect to meet their target revenues for the first quarter while the majority reported an expected loss in revenues. So far, 9% of the companies are operating normally and approximately 78% expect operations to return to normal by the end of April.

Chairman Kim noted that several AMCHAM member companies have implemented solutions that lessen the negative impact of the virus on operations, such as distance learning for schools, the usage of cloud computing, the distribution of masks and sanitary equipment and extension of loan paybacks for SMEs. In addition, the Chairman said, “We at AMCHAM have complete confidence that the Korean government is undertaking every possible measure to confront the situation and restore normalcy.” In terms of future measures, he commented, “The government, companies and consumers should continue to cooperate to support speedy normalization of business, especially for industries that are most affected.”

Commenting on the U.S. Department of State's travel advisory on South Korea, Chairman Jones said, “The fact that the highest level travel advisory has been restricted to the Daegu region and not to all of Korea shows the U.S. government’s recognition of South Korea’s effective measures to contain the outbreak.”

주한미국상공회의소, 코로나19 관련 기자회견

2020년 3월 5일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 ‘암참’)는 3월 5일 코로나19 현황과 관련한 기자회견을 열었다. 이번 기자회견에는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사, 제프리 존스 암참 이사회 회장이 참석해 한국의 코로나19 현황, 국내 다국적 재계에 미치는 영향 및 사업 정상화를 위한 조치에 대해 발표했다.

제임스 김 회장과 제프리 존스 회장은 바이러스 발생에 대한 한국 정부의 적극적이고 철저한 대응을 언급하고, 확진 사례가 높게 식별된 점에 대해 타국 대비 신속하고 투명한 한국 정부의 검사를 이유로 들었다. 이에 덧붙여 암참은 일평균 1만 명 이상의 검사가 가능한 국내 진료 역량을 칭송하며 한국 정부의 혁신적인 억제 노력을 강조했다.

이어서 코로나19가 암참 회원사에 미치는 영향에 대한 설문 결과를 발표하며, 약70%의 암참 회원사가 출장 및 행사 진행에 제한, 전반적인 판매 감소를 겪고 있다고 전했다. 또한 40%가량의 암참 회원사가 원료 공급, 유통 차질 및 인력 부족을 겪고 있다고 전했다. 대다수가 예상 매출 손실을 전망한 반면, 약 20%의 회원사가 1분기 영업실적 목표 달성을 기대한다고 밝혔다. 현재 암참 회원사 중 9%의 기업이 정상적으로 운영되고 있으며, 약 78%는 4월 말까지 운영 정상화를 예상한다고 밝혔다.

제임스 김 회장은 암참 회원사의 클라우드를 활용한 원격 근무, 마스크 등 방역 용품 생산, 피해 중소기업 및 소상공인 대상 특별 금융 지원, 원격 교육 제공 등 현 사태 타개를 위해 기여하고 있는 다양한 접근법을 언급했다. 그는 또한 "암참은 한국 정부가 현 사태로부터 회복하기 위해 가능한 모든 조치를 취하고 있다는 확신이 있다”며 "코로나19 사태로 인해 영향을 받는 산업군에 대해 정부, 기업, 소비자가 협력해 사업 정상화를 지원해야 한다”고 말했다.

제프리 존스 회장은 미 국무부의 한국 여행 권고와 관련해 "미국이 여행금지 권고를 한국 전체가 아닌 대구 지역으로 제한한 것은 미국 정부가 한국의 실효성 있는 방역조치를 인정한 것”이라고 말했다.
