The event began with opening remarks by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, who emphasized the importance of collaboration in boosting innovation in the post-COVID-19 era. “We have seen the brightest scientists and researchers, working at companies around the world, combine forces to develop new vaccines and treatments at historic speed,” he said. “This incredible innovation has culminated in the development of several vaccines in a historic amount of time. Now, it is important for all of us to continue this momentum in the post-COVID era.”

In his congratulatory remarks, which were shared by video, Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun pledged the Korean government’s continued collaboration with the international community to facilitate the curb of the COVID-19 pandemic. “The Korean government will continue international cooperation for the development of COVID-19 vaccines and treatments and spare no effort to meet the public’s expectations for treatments,” he said. “We will maintain close ties with the incoming U.S. administration led by President-elect Joe Biden and continue to strengthen the U.S.-Korea alliance. I hope that all members of AMCHAM, who have served as a bridge between the two countries’ economic cooperation and understanding, will also help.”

H.E. Kim Minseok, Chairman of the Health and Welfare Committee at the National Assembly, also delivered congratulatory remarks, underlining the importance of cooperation in the healthcare sector for the future growth of Korea. “The healthcare sector was chosen as strategic growth engine by Korean government. In that sense, support from AMCHAM is extremely important,” he said.

The Hon. Harry Harris, Ambassador at the U.S. Embassy Seoul, said, “As the United States and South Korea look at ways to grow our economies and improve the lives of their people, I know that our two countries will continue to innovate together,” said Ambassador Harris. “I’m confident organizations like AMCHAM will work to improve the regulatory and business environment that supports and rewards innovation – for both Korean and American businesses.”

The first session included presentations and panel discussions with a panel comprised of Francis Van Parys, Vice President Commercial of Cytiva Asia-Pacific, Alex Aravanis, M.D., Ph.D., Chief Technology Officer at Illumina Global, and Jenny Zheng, Area Managing Director of Janssen North Asia, moderated by Hee Joo Choi, Senior Advisor at Yulchon LLC. Covering the topic of “Open Innovation amid the COVID Pandemic,” the presenters emphasized that a complex collaborative effort amongst companies of all sizes, academia and government is critical for successfully combating the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Open innovation is about creating a strong network of people who can combine resources, ideas and technology in a new way. It is about co-creating an ecosystem and discussing how can we together support Korea and make it a business hub in healthcare,” said Jenny Zheng, Area Managing Director of Janssen North Asia. “It’s great to think about how we as a company can support the government and small companies to create great collaboration.”

The second session explored the topic of “The ‘Big Data’ Revolution in Healthcare: Challenges and Opportunities” with representatives from the Presidential Committee on the 4^th Industrial Revolution, the Ministry of Science and ICT, GE Healthcare Korea, Amazon Web Services Korea, Seoul Medical Intelligence Lab Inc., and Seoul Asan Hospital.

2020년 12월 17일 – 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)는 12월 17일 (목) 밀레니엄 힐튼 서울에서 제11회 ‘암참 보건의료혁신세미나’를 개최했다. 이날 행사에는 한·미 정부, 산업계 및 학계 대표들이 참석하여 ‘포스트 코로나 시대의 보건의료: 스마트 의료 혁신 육성’이라는 주제 하에 활발한 발표와 토론을 벌였다.

암참 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 “우리는 전 세계 기업에서 일하는 뛰어난 과학자들과 연구원들이 매우 신속한 속도로 새로운 백신과 치료법을 개발하기 위해 힘을 합치는 것을 목격했다. 오늘의 혁신은 오랜 기간동안 축적되어 온 지식과 기술을 통해 절정에 달했으며, 포스트 코로나 시대에도 이러한 모멘텀을 지속하는 것이 중요하다”며 포스트 코로나 시대의 메디컬 혁신에 있어 협력의 중요성을 강조했다.

정세균 국무총리는 영상 축사를 통해 코로나19의 확산을 막기 위한 한국 정부와 국제 사회 간의 지속적인 협력을 약속했다. “한국 정부는 백신과 치료제 개발을 위해 국제 협력을 지속해 가면서 치료제에 대한 국민의 기대에 부응할 수 있도록 가능한 모든 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”며 “조 바이든 대통령 당선인께서 이끌 차기 미국 행정부와 긴밀한 관계를 유지하며 우리의 동맹관계를 더욱 굳건히 다져나갈 것이다. 그 과정에서 양국의 경제 협력 증진의 가교 역할을 해온 암참 회원사들 또한 앞장서주시길 바란다”고 말했다.

김민석 국회 보건복지위원장은 축사를 통해 “한국이 바이오 기술 분야를 새로운 전략 산업으로 삼아 발전을 추진해가는 가운데, 한국의 바이오 헬스 산업 성장에 있어 암참과의 연계성이 강화되었으면 한다”며 “헬스케어 분야에 있어서도 한국에서 성장하고 활동하는 외국계 기업들이 더욱더 성장하고 한국의 성장에도 기여할 수 있는 길을 찾도록 노력하겠다”고 전했다.

해리 해리스 주한미국대사는 “한·미 경제를 성장시키고 국민들의 삶을 개선할 수 있는 방법을 모색함에 따라, 우리 두 나라가 계속해서 함께 혁신해 나갈 것을 믿고 있다”며 “암참은 한국과 미국 기업 모두의 혁신을 위한 규제 및 비즈니스 환경 개선을 위해 노력할 것이라고 믿는다”고 말했다.

최희주 법무법인 율촌 수석 고문이 좌장을 맡은 첫번째 패널토론 세션에서는 프란시스 반 패리스 싸이티바 아시아 태평양 지역 총괄 사장, 알렉스 아라바니스 일루미나 글로벌 최고 기술 책임자, 제니 정 얀센 북아시아 총괄 책임자가 ‘코로나19 대유행 속 개방형 혁신’에 대해 논의했다. 발표자들은 코로나19의 성공적인 퇴치를 위해 기업, 학계 및 정부 사이의 종합적인 협력이 매우 중요하다고 강조했다.

제니 정 얀센 북아시아 총괄 책임자는 “개방형 혁신은 자원, 아이디어, 기술을 새로운 방식으로 결합할 수 있는 강력한 네트워크를 만드는 것”이라며 “공동 생태계 조성과 한국을 의료 분야 비즈니스 허브로 만들 방법을 논의하는 것”이라고 말했다.

두번째 패널토론 세션은 ‘보건의료 분야의 ‘빅 데이터’ 혁명: 도전과 기회’를 주제로 대통령직속 4차산업혁명위원회, 과학기술정보통신부, GE 헬스케어 코리아, 아마존웹서비시즈 코리아, ㈜서울의료정보연구소 및 서울아산병원 관계자들이 패널로 참석해 활발한 토론을 벌였다.
