December 9, 2020 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the first AMCHAM SME Collaboration Forum on December 9, 2020, at the Millennium Hilton Seoul. Officials from the U.S. and Korean governments and CEOs of foreign and local companies attended the event to explore ways to build partnerships between global companies and local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) under the topic “Promoting New Partnerships for Growth in Global Markets.”

In his congratulatory remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim underlined the importance of collaboration between multinational companies and local SMEs to expand business opportunities in Korea and the rest of the world. “I firmly believe that global companies and Korean SMEs can be the ideal partners that unlock the future of innovative industries,” he said. “With the right commitment and policy support from the Korean government, I am convinced that there is no limit to what can be achieved.”

Following Chairman & CEO Kim were welcoming remarks by O.H. Kwon, Vice President of QUALCOMM CDMA Technologies (Korea) YH and President of Qualcomm Korea delivered opening remarks. “Small and medium-sized enterprises and venture companies are important partners for Qualcomm Korea and many AMCHAM Korea member companies,” he said. “I believe that collaboration with these companies will be an important stepping stone for greater success in the 5G era that will create new products and markets.”

H.E. Sang-min Lee of the National Assembly delivered congratulatory remarks. “We believe that small and medium-sized companies, as the basis of our economy, need support to both overcome the COVID-19 pandemic and play a role in leading the post-COVID era," he said. "This seminar will be a place to gather wisdom and energy to unite and collaborate to enhance the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises and to enable them to innovate global enterprises."

Following Assemblyman Lee, U.S. Ambassador Harry Harris of the U.S. Embassy also delivered congratulatory remarks. "Looking ahead, and especially toward the day when we emerge from the cloud of COVID, we’ll continue to foster our strong partnership with the ROK and the AMCHAM in helping Korean and American companies lead the world with innovative and cutting-edge technologies, to protect our common interests and values, and to advance our commercial ties.”

H.E. Young-sun Park, Minister of SMEs and Startups, delivered remarks on the topic of “Prospects and Governmental Support for SME Collaborations with Global Companies.” She emphasized the government’s ongoing endeavors to build upon the infrastructure that supports productive joint efforts with the global business community. “Amid today’s change for innovative growth and digital transformation, countries around the world are competing fiercely to stay ahead. To develop innovative technologies and build and expand new value chains, global open innovation among leading companies, SMEs and startups is critical.”

Representatives from global companies such as Qualcomm Korea, GE Healthcare, as well as Korean SMEs including Linkflow and Lunit, delivered presentations and participated in a panel discussion moderated by Geun-Bae Seok, Partner at Shin & Kim LLC, exploring the innovative ways in which each company has successfully collaborated with its partners. They covered best practices to overcome various challenges as well as cooperation to support Korean SMEs to go global.

2020 암참 중소기업 상생협력 포럼

2020년 12월 09일 ? 주한미국상공회의소(이하 “암참”)는 9월 2일 밀레니엄 힐튼 서울에서 ‘2020 암참 중소기업 상생협력 포럼’을 개최했다. 이날 행사에는 한미 주요 정책관계자, 글로벌 기업 임원, 주한 외국 공관 관계자 등 전문가들이 참석하여 ‘글로벌 시장에서의 성장을 위한 새로운 파트너십 진척’ 주제 하에 활발한 발표와 토론을 벌였다.

암참 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 “글로벌 기업과 한국 중소기업이 혁신산업의 미래를 여는 이상적인 파트너가 될 수 있다고 굳게 믿는다”며 “한국 정부의 올바른 의지와 다양한 정책지원 속 무한한 가능성을 확신한다”고 덧붙였다.

이날 축사를 맡은 권오형 퀄컴코리아 사장은 “중소기업 및 벤처기업들은 퀄컴코리아에게 그리고 많은 암참 회원사인 미국 기업들에게 중요한 파트너”이라며 “새로운 제품과 시장을 만들어 낼 5G 시대에 우리의 협력과 상생이 더 큰 성공의 중요한 기반이 될 것이라고 믿는다”고 말했다.

이어진 축사에서 이상민 의원는 “중소기업은 우리 경제의 근간으로써 코로나 19의 위기를 극복하고 포스트 코로나 시대를 선도할 수 있는 그런 역할을 하도록 다방면의 지원과 응원이 필요하다고 생각된다”며 “중소기업의 경쟁력을 더 높이고 중소기업이 혁신을 통해서 글로벌 기업에 혁신도 이루어질 수 있도록 서로 연대하고 협업할 수 있는 지혜와 에너지를 모으는 자리가 되길 바라겠다”고 전했다.

해리 해리스 주한미국대사는 “한미 양국의 대표 기업들이 혁신 기술을 통해 세계를 선도하여 공동의 가치를 수호하고, 유대관계를 증진할 수 있도록 대한민국 정부 그리고 암참과의 협력관계를 지속적으로 강화해갈 것”이라고 말했다.

중소벤처기업부 박영선 장관은 “글로벌 기업과 중소기업 간의 협력을 위한 전망과 정부지원”을 주제로 기조연설을 했다. 박영선 장관은 “세계 각국은 혁신성장과 디지털 전환이라는 격변의 시기에 치열한 각축을 벌이고 있고, 혁신기술의 창출과 새로운 가치사슬의 구축과 확대에 선도 기업과 중소기업, 스타트업 간에 글로벌 오픈 이노베이션은 중요한 과제”이라며 글로벌 비즈니스 커뮤니티와의 생산적인 공동 노력을 지원하는 인프라를 구축하기 위해서는 정부의 지속적인 노력이 필수적임을 거듭 강조했다.

퀄컴코리아, GE 헬스케어 등 글로벌 기업들과 링크플로우, 루닛 등 국내 중소기업들의 발표 및 법무법인 세종의 석근배 파트너변호사가 좌장을 맡은 패널 토론에서는 상생협력 성공사례 공유 및 한국 중소기업의 글로벌 진출 전략에 대해 분석하는 자리를 가졌다.
