AMCHAM Strives to Make Korea Top Investment Destination for U.S. Companies in East Asia 

- 3rd Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2021 -

June 16, 2021 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the third AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2021 on June 16, 2021 in a hybrid online-offline format. Distinguished guests, including officials from the U.S. and Korean governments and CEOs of foreign companies, attended the event on/offline.

This year’s event covered the theme “Seizing Korea’s Moment to Become the Leading Business Destination in East Asia” and featured presentations and panel discussions exploring priorities for enhancing Korea’s competitiveness in the region.

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Today’s seminar is focused on how we can take our economic partnership to the next level by making Korea not just a great place to invest, but the number one destination for U.S. companies’ investment in the East Asia region.” He continued, “I am certain that today’s seminar will mark an important milestone in the cooperation between Korea and global companies for a stronger and more vibrant economic partnership.” He added, "I sincerely hope that soon, all members on the AMCHAM Korea Board of Governors will be head of Asia of each of their companies."

The event also included congratulatory remarks by H.E. Yoon Huduk, member of the National Assembly, Trade Minister Yoo Myung Hee from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, and Chargé d’Affaires ad interim Robert Rapson from the U.S. Embassy Seoul.

Assemblyman Yoon said in his congratulatory remarks, “Cooperation with the U.S. is key for Korea to become an economic hub in the East Asia. I will do my best to gather diverse opinions and ideas discussed at today’s seminar to reach a consensus that fits the new environment and create appropriate policies and institutions.”

Trade Minister Yoo also said, “The Korean government will continue to promote the U.S.-Korean collaboration and partnership to facilitate the growth of the global economy in the post-COVID era. We will take the lead in promoting solidarity and problem-solving for sustainable growth as well as working to ensure Korea establishes itself as a business hub in Northeast Asia.”

“Overall, we at the U.S. Embassy and the U.S. government are fully committed to growing our economic and commercial partnership with the Republic of Korea. Working together, in coordination with the AMCHAM and others, we aim to ensure resilient supply chains, and the competitiveness of our industries, especially in emerging technologies that are the heart of innovation and in sectors that are critical to the future of our economies.” remarked CDA Robert Rapson.

The event featured a panel discussion examining Korea’s role in corporate regional strategies with representatives from KOTRA, Qualcomm Korea, Johnson & Johnson, and Subway International B.V.

The event also examined various issues in operating a business in Korea, such as leveraging the digital transformation, maneuvering around laws involving taxation as well as labor, running a supply chain, and strategizing government relations. Speakers from Dell Technologies, UPS Korea, Shin & Kim LLC, and PERSOLKELLY also participated in a panel discussion on the theme of “Fostering a Globally Competitive Regulatory Environment in Korea.”

한국을 동아시아 內 미국 기업 제1의 투자 허브로 부상시키기 위한 방안 논의

- 제3회 국내 기업환경 세미나 2021 개최- ​ 

2021년 6월 16일 – 주한미국상공회의소 (암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 금일 오전 콘래드 호텔에서 ‘국내 기업환경 세미나 2021’ (AMCHAM Doing Business in Korea Seminar 2021)를 개최했다. 올해로 3회째를 맞는 이번 ‘국내 기업환경 세미나’는 한·미 정부 관계자 및 다수의 글로벌 기업 CEO 등 약 200여명의 정재계 인사들이 참석한 가운데 온·오프라인 하이브리드 형식으로 진행되었다.

이번 세미나에서는 ‘동아시아 비즈니스의 중심을 향하는 대한민국의 오늘’ 이라는 대주제로, 대한민국을 아시아 최고의 외국인 투자국으로 부상시킬 수 있는 방안과 함께 대한민국의 경쟁력 제고를 위한 우선순위를 모색하는 발표 세션 및 패널 토론이 이어졌다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 "오늘 세미나는 한국을 단순히 투자하기 좋은 곳일 뿐 아니라 동아시아 內 미국 기업의 투자 1순위 행선지로 만들어 경제 파트너십을 한 단계 끌어올리는 데 초점을 맞추고 있다.”며 "오늘 이 시간이 더욱 강력하고 활기찬 경제 파트너십을 위한 한국과 글로벌 기업 간 협력에 있어 중요한 이정표가 될 것으로 확신한다."고 말하며, “암참 이사회 임원진 (Board of Governors) 모두가 아시아 총괄 책임이라는 중책을 맡을 그날이 하루빨리 오기를 손꼽아 희망한다” 라고 덧붙였다.

윤후덕 위원장은 축사에서 “미국과의 협력은 대한민국이 동아시아 경제 허브로 도약하기 위해 반드시 추구해야 할 기본 가치이다. 오늘 세미나에서 논의될 다양한 의견과 대안을 수렴, 새로운 환경에 걸맞은 사회적 합의를 도출하고 정책과 제도를 마련하는데 세심한 노력을 기울이겠다” 라고 말했다. 

유명희 통상교섭본부장은 뒤이어 “한국 정부는 포스트 코로나 시대에 글로벌 경제의 상생과 성장을 위해, 한·미간 협력 및 파트너십을 지속 강화해 나갈 것이다. 지속가능한 성장을 위한 전세계적 연대와 문제해결에 앞장섬과 동시에 한국이 동북아 비즈니스 허브로 자리매김할 수 있도록 지원하겠다.”고 밝혔다. 

또한, 로버트 랩슨 주한미국대사 대리는 축사를 통해 “미국 대사관과 미국 정부는 한국과 경제·상업적 협력관계를 전반적으로 더욱 발전시키기 위해 최선의 노력을 다하고 있다. 암참을 비롯한 파트너들과의 협력을 통해 특별히 혁신의 중요 요소인 신흥 기술 산업 및 우리 경제의 미래에 있어 중요한 분야에서의 탄력적인 공급망과 산업 경쟁력을 확보해야 한다.” 라고 말했다.

이 날 진행된 첫 번째 패널 토론에서는 코트라 외국인투자 옴부즈만, 한국존슨앤드존슨메디컬㈜, 퀄컴코리아, 써브웨이코리아가 패널로 참석한 가운데, 동북아시아 비즈니스 허브전략 추진 방안과 관련하여 기업의 지역별 전략 및 한국이 수행해야 할 역할에 대해 분석하는 시간을 가졌다. 

또한, 이번 세미나를 통해 한국 내 기업 환경에서 디지털 혁신 활용 방안, 지역적 관점의 국내 노동·조세 제도, 국내 공급망 및 물류 허브 운영, COVID-19 국내 HR의 변화, 성공적인 국내 비즈니스를 위한 대정부 관계 전략 수립 등 다양한 현안들에 대해서도 심도 있는 논의를 나누었다. 델 테크놀로지스, 법무법인 세종, UPS Korea, 퍼솔켈리 코리아가 참석한 두번째 패널토론에서는 '글로벌 경쟁력을 갖춘 국내 규제 환경 조성을 위한 개선 방안’을 논의했다.
