AMCHAM Explores Solutions for Workplace Tension Between Different Generations with Leaders of Global Companies

November 23, 2021 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) partnered with Morgan Philips Korea to host a webinar on “Intergenerational Tension in the Workplace.” Featuring the CEOs of four leading global companies, the webinar explored the question, “Can the Millennials, Gen Z, and ‘Kkondae’ co-exist harmoniously in the workplace?”

Speakers included Christina Ahn, Managing Director of Morgan Philips Korea, O.H. Kwon, SVP & President of APAC at Qualcomm, Robert Wilkinson, Managing Director of Colliers, Jiwon Oh, Country Chair of Shell Companies in Korea, and Tyler Joo, Marketing Director of Global Brands at ABInBev.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim led a conversation with the speakers about what creates intergenerational conflict in the workplace and measures for facilitating more collaboration and teamwork. Each representing a different generation, the speakers discussed their observations on key differences between each generation and how to eradicate incorrect biases about each generation. They also shared their personal observations and insights about how much intergenerational conflict affects productivity and morale within the company as well as advice for global company leaders striving to tackle these challenges.

“Millennials make up a significant portion of the workforce. We now work with younger employees who have their own unique generation of values and skills,” said James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO. “It is now more important than ever for companies to examine how to create a harmonious work environment so that the various generations of employees can collaborate effectively.” He further commented, “We created this webinar to showcase how companies can be effective if they can successfully navigate the management and teamwork of both ‘Kkondae’ and the newer generation. If the leader can successfully create the right teamwork and synergy, it will ultimately lead to a great organization. I hope that this webinar will create these new dynamics for all of our member companies.”

O.H. Kwon, SVP and President of APAC at Qualcomm, remarked, “We should continue to listen to the voices of younger generations and talk to them with their language as much as possible. I strongly believe that kind of leadership effort for better communication can reduce intergenerational tension.”

2021년 11월 23일 - 주한미국상공회의소 (암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 오늘 오전 모건필립스 코리아와의 협력을 통해 “직장 內 세대 공감”을 주제로 웨비나를 개최했다. 이번 웨비나에서 암참은 유수의 글로벌 기업 세대별 대표 4인을 초청해 “MZ세대와 ‘라떼세대 (a.k.a. “꼰대”)’가 직장에서 조화롭게 공존하는 방법”을 주제로 열띤 토론을 이어 나갔다.

이번 웨비나에는 크리스티나 안 모건필립스 코리아 대표, 권오형 퀄컴 본사 수석 부사장 겸 아태지역 총괄 사장, 로버트 윌킨슨 컬리어스 대표, 오지원 쉘코리아 총괄 사장, 주태환 ABINBev (OB맥주) 상무가 패널로 참석해 각자의 생생한 경험을 바탕으로 한 솔직한 이야기를 들려주었다.

이날 토크쇼는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사가 사회를 맡아 패널들과 함께 직장 內 세대 갈등 유발 요인은 무엇이며, 이를 타파하여 협업을 통해 팀워크를 향상시킬 수 있는 방안은 무엇인지 등에 대한 자연스러운 대화를 이끌었다. 각기 다른 세대를 대표하는 패널들은 이날, 갈등 유발 요인인 세대 간 차이점과 서로에 대한 잘못된 편견을 없앨 수 있는 방법 등에 대해서도 의견을 나누었으며, 세대 간 갈등이 기업의 생산성과 사기에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지에 대한 각자의 통찰, 그리고 이러한 과제를 해결하기 위해 노력하는 글로벌 기업 리더들을 위한 조언 등을 공유하였다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 “흔히 MZ로 불리는 밀레니얼 세대가 직장 內 핵심 집단으로 자리잡은 지금, 우리는 자신들만의 가치관과 뛰어난 기술을 가진 젊은 세대들과 화합하며 여러 세대가 함께 효율적으로 일할 수 있는 직장 환경을 만드는 데에 힘써야 할 때” 라고 말하며, “이번 웨비나는 기업들이 소위 “라떼세대(a.k.a. “꼰대”)”와 젊은 세대 간 팀워크를 향상시키고 협업을 이끌어 낼 때 얼마만큼의 효율을 달성할 수 있을지를 보여주기 위해 마련됐다. 그룹의 리더가 이 미션에 성공할 수 있다면 그 조직은 궁극적으로 훌륭한 조직으로 나아갈 것이라는 점에서, 오늘 웨비나에 참석한 모든 분들에게 동기부여가 되었기를 바란다.”고 소감을 밝혔다. 

패널로 참여한 권오형 퀄컴 본사 수석 부사장 겸 아태지역 총괄 사장은 또한, “우리는 계속해서 젊은 세대의 목소리에 귀를 기울이고 최대한 그들의 언어로 대화해야 한다. 보다 나은 소통을 위한 리더십의 노력이 세대 간 긴장을 줄일 수 있다고 강하게 믿는다.” 라고 말했다.
