July 21, 2021 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) and the Korean-German Chamber of Commercial and Industry (KGCCI; Chairperson Hyun-Nam Park and President & CEO Dr. Martin Henkelmann) met H.E. Park Byeong-seug, Speaker of the 21^st National Assembly of the Republic of Korea, at the capitol building on July 20, 2021.

Representing the business communities of two of Korea’s most important trading and investment partners, Chairman Kim, Chairperson Park and Dr. Henkelmann shared ideas and recommendations on how to maximize the competitiveness of the Korean business environment and enhance cooperation between the three countries’ public and private sectors.

“Based on its strong response to COVID, its world-leading IT and manufacturing capabilities, and its first-class human resources, Korea has a great opportunity to position itself as a new regional hub for Asia,” remarked AMCHAM Chairman and CEO James Kim. “At the summit between President Biden and President Moon in May, Korean companies announced nearly $40 billion in in investments in the U.S. in future industries. I believe there is huge potential for more cooperation that will bring more trade, investments and high-quality jobs to both countries.”

KGCCI Chairperson Hyun-Nam Park said: “KGCCI, celebrating its 40th anniversary, is witnessing the ever-growing importance of the Korean-German business relations. As of 2020, Korea is now the second largest export country to Germany in Asia-Pacific. We see an ever-stronger momentum now during the pandemic and in the international economic context.”

KGCCI President and CEO Dr. Henkelmann pointed out: “The EU-Korean Free Trade Agreement (FTA) has had and still has a very positive impact on businesses in Korea and Germany. The 10th anniversary of the FTA would be very good occasion to engage in discussions on how to modernize it to make it even more beneficial for both sides.”

Speaker Park and the two chamber heads discussed a range of potential measures to make Korea a more competitive destination for foreign businesses. In particular, the participants discussed the importance of aligning Korea’s relatively high corporate and individual tax rates and stringent labor regulations with peer markets in East Asia. They also shared suggestions to promote Korea’s post-COVID-19 economic recovery, including by facilitating travel for individuals who are fully vaccinated for COVID-19.

In addition, the participants noted the strong potential for cooperation in the environment, social and corporate governance (ESG)-related initiatives. AMCHAM launched an ESG Committee and held the first U.S.-Korea ESG Seminar in May of 2021. The participants expressed keen interest in pursuing further cooperation to share and implement global best practices for ESG in Korea.

KGCCI, with its continued interest in Korea’s qualified workforce, reported about the very successful activities of German car and truck manufacturers in the field of Vocational Training (Ausbildung) which contributed in creating quality jobs for talented young Koreans since 2017.

대한민국이 글로벌 기업 제1의 비즈니스 허브로 자리매김할 방안 논의 

2021년 7월 21일 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 7월 20일 오후 한독상공회의소(KGCCI; 회장 박현남, 대표 마틴 행켈만)와 함께 박병석 국회의장을 예방하였다.

여의도 국회의장 집무실에서 진행된 이번 간담회에는 대한민국의 가장 중요한 무역 및 투자 파트너인 미국과 독일 양국 재계를 대표하여 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와 박현남 KGCCI 회장, 마틴 헹켈만 KGCCI 대표가 참석한 가운데, 한국 내 기업환경 경쟁력을 극대화하고 세 나라 간 공공 및 민간 협력을 강화할 수 있는 방안에 대한 서로의 의견을 나눴다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 "COVID-19을 이겨내는 과정에서 대한민국이 보여준 강력한 대응과 세계 최고의 IT·제조 역량, 최상급의 인재 등을 바탕으로 한국은 아시아의 새로운 허브로 자리매김할 수 있는 좋은 위치를 선점하게 됐다"고 말하며, "지난 5월 바이든 대통령과 문 대통령의 정상회담에서 한국 기업들이 미래산업에 대한 400억달러 규모의 투자를 약속하였고, 이를 통해 양국 모두에 더 많은 무역, 투자, 양질의 일자리를 가져다 줄 수 있도록 보다 큰 협력이 필요할 것으로 생각한다." 라고 덧붙였다.

박현남 KGCCI 회장은, “올해로 창립 40주년을 맞은 KGCCI는 날로 커지고 있는 한-독 비즈니스 관계의 중요성을 목도하고 있는 산증인이라 할 수 있다. 2020년 기준 한국은 아태지역 국가 중 독일로의 수출 2위를 달성했을 만큼의 저력을 보여주었고, 팬데믹 상황이 지배하고 있는 세계 경제 가운데 그 어느때 보다도 강력한 모멘텀을 목격하고 있다.”고 평가했다.

헹켈만 대표는 이어, "EU-한 자유무역협정(FTA)은 한국과 독일의 기업들에 매우 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있다"며 “FTA 10주년을 맞아 양국 모두에게 보다 더 큰 혜택을 줄 수 있는 FTA 현대화 방안을 논의할 때” 라고 말했다.

박병석 의장과 제임스 김 회장, 박현남 회장, 행켈만 대표는 외투 기업에 있어 한국을 보다 매력적인 투자국으로 만들기 위한 다양한 방안에 대해 심도 깊은 대화를 이어 나갔다. 특히나 이들은 모두 상대적으로 높은 한국의 법인세율과 개인세율, 엄격한 노동 규제 등을 들어 동아시아 내 경쟁국과 비슷한 수준으로 맞추는 것이 중요하다는 의견에 모두 깊이 동의했다. 또한, 코로나 백신 접종 완료자의 여행 촉진 등 포스트 코로나 시대의 경기 회복을 위한 제안도 잊지 않았다.

현재 가장 뜨거운 화두인 ESG와 관련하여서도, 상호 강력한 협력의 필요성을 언급하며 세계 최고 수준의 우수사례를 서로 공유하고 실천하는 데에 힘을 합할 것을 결의하였다. 암참은 올해 ESG 분과위원회를 신설하여, 지난 5월 첫 번째 한미 ESG 세미나를 개최한 바 있다.

한편 KGCCI는 한국의 우수한 인력에 대한 지속적인 관심을 바탕으로, 2017년부터 독일 자동차 및 트럭 제조사와의 직업훈련(Ausbildung) 프로그램을 통해 양질의 청년 일자리 창출에 기여하고 있다.

The Korean-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KGCCI), celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2021, has been serving as an official representative of German business in Korea since its foundation in 1981. With around 500 members, KGCCI belongs to the global German Chamber Network Abroad (AHK) which has 140 German Chamber offices in 92 countries and about 50,000 members worldwide.
