AMCHAM, Qualcomm Korea Team up with 

Minister of SMEs and Startups Kwon Chil-seung to Promote Win-Win Partnerships

January 20, 2022 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the second AMCHAM SME Collaboration Forum on January 20, 2022, at the Andaz Seoul Gangnam. The event aimed to seek stronger partnerships between global companies and SMEs (SMEs) as win-win cooperation between global companies and domestic SMEs and shared growth of the corporate ecosystem emerge as major management strategies for sustainable growth in the post-COVID-19 era.

The forum, sponsored by Qualcomm Korea YH for the second time since last year, was attended by many officials from South Korea and the U.S. government, including Minister of SMEs Kwon Chil-seung and Deputy Economic Counselor of the U.S. Embassy Seoul Michael Cavanaugh. Representatives from domestic and foreign companies gathered to discuss ways to strengthen collaboration between global companies and SMEs in high-tech fields and promote future cooperation opportunities between the two countries under the topic “Promoting SMEs for Industry Convergence & Diversification.”

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim emphasized partnerships between global companies and Korean SMEs. “U.S. companies have long valued their partnerships with innovative SMEs. Having a strong network of clients, customers and suppliers within the local SME ecosystem is key to business success in Korea,” he said. “U.S. businesses, in turn, contribute investments, innovations and jobs that have helped Korean SMEs prosper and fueled the country’s economic growth.” He also added, “This is a vision all leading Korean presidential candidates share ahead of the upcoming presidential election in March. With the right commitment and policy support from the Korean government, I am convinced that there is no limit to what such partnerships can achieve.”

O.H. Kwon, SVP and President of Qualcomm APAC, also delivered welcoming remarks. “Qualcomm is hoping to accelerate the revitalization of the 5G ecosystem by joining with the excellent products and technologies of domestic SMEs,” he said. “Following mobile, automotive technology is emerging as the next-generation innovative industry, so we will continue to strengthen our collaboration with domestic SMEs so that these innovative technologies materialize into products and services.” He also added, “The government's continued interest and support are important to maintain win-win relationships in the future and promote cooperation with domestic small and medium-sized business partners.”

H.E. Kwon Chil-seung, Minister of SMEs and Startups, said, “We will continue to work closely with AMCHAM to expand upon the successes of the SME Collaboration Forum today.” He added, “We will establish the ‘Korea-U.S. Business Support Council’ this month to support businesses in Korea and the U.S.”

H.E. Hong Jungmin of the National Assembly also delivered congratulatory remarks. “Win-win partnerships are particularly important in that they can be an opportunity to respond to the rapidly changing industrial environment and take a leap forward based on its strong synergy.” She added, “We will continue to make efforts to come up with right policies to strengthen win-win partnerships between foreign-invested companies and SMEs."

From the U.S. Embassy Seoul, Deputy Economic Counselor Michael Cavanaugh said, “Our role in government is to foster a positive business environment for SMEs by creating a level playing field, open markets, and fair regulations for both domestic and foreign SMEs.”

The event focused on collaboration with SMEs in the IOT and automotive and mobility sectors. Representatives from global companies such as Qualcomm Korea, GM Korea and 7 Korean companies presented on each company’s partnerships in the field, including best practices and future outlook. The speakers also participated in a panel discussion on the topic moderated by Hwang Seong Ik, Partner at Shin & Kim LLC. This is AMCHAM’s second SME Collaboration Forum. The first event took place in 2020 focusing on partnerships involving 5G and AI.

주한미국상공회의소, 퀄컴코리아 중소벤처기업부 권칠승 장관과 함께 상생협력 강화 방안 모색

- 제2회 ‘2022 암참 중소기업 상생협력 포럼’ 성료 -

2022년 01월 20일 – 주한미국상공회의소 (암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 1월 20일 오후 안다즈 서울 강남 호텔에서 ‘2022 암참 중소기업 상생협력 포럼 (AMCHAM SME Collaboration Forum 2022)’을 개최했다. 이번 행사는 글로벌 기업과 국내 중소기업 간 상생협력과 기업 생태계의 동반성장이 포스트코로나 시대 지속성장을 위한 주요 경영전략으로 대두됨에 따라, 글로벌 기업과 중소기업(SME) 간의 보다 탄탄한 파트너십 구축 방안을 모색하기 위해 마련되었다.

퀄컴코리아의 후원으로 지난해에 이어 두 번째로 개최된 이번 포럼에는 권칠승 중소벤처기업부 장관, 마이클 캐베나 주한미국대사관 경제과 참사관을 비롯한 한·미 정부 관계자 및 국내·외 기업 관계자 다수가 참석한 가운데, ‘산업간 융합 및 다각화를 위한 중소기업 육성'을 주제로 글로벌 기업과 중소기업 간 첨단 기술 분야에서의 상생협력 강화 및 양국간 향후 협력 기회 증진 방안 대해 논의하는 시간을 가졌다. 

암참 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 먼저 글로벌 기업과 한국 중소기업 간 파트너십의 중요성을 강조하였다. 또한, “미국 기업들은 오랫동안 한국의 혁신적인 중소기업과의 파트너십을 가치 있게 여겨오고 있으며, 중소기업이 보유하고 있는 거래처, 고객, 공급업체의 끈끈한 네트워크가 한국 內 사업 성공의 핵심” 이라고 말했다. 그는 이어, “미국 기업들은 이에 화답하듯 투자와 혁신, 일자리를 제공함으로써 한국 중소 기업의 번창을 돕고 대한민국의 경제 성장에 이바지해왔다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 그는 한편, “글로벌 기업과 중소기업의 상생협력은 오는 3월 대선을 앞두고 한국의 유력 대선주자들이 한 목소리로 강조하고 있는 공동의 비전이다.” 라고 말하며, “정부차원에의 적절한 투자와 정책적 지원이 뒷받침된다면, 무한한 동반성장을 이룩할 수 있을 것이라 확신한다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 

권오형 퀄컴 본사 수석 부사장 겸 아태지역 총괄 사장은 환영사를 통해 “퀄컴은 국내 중소기업들의 뛰어난 제품과 기술력을 결합해 5G 생태계 활성화 가속화에 노력하고 있다”고 말하며, “모바일에 이어 오토모티브 기술이 차세대 혁신 사업 분야로 부상하고 있어, 관련 혁신적인 기술을 제품과 서비스로 구현하기 위해 국내 중소벤처기업들과 상생협력을 지속해서 강화해 나가겠다.”는 의지를 밝혔다. 그는 또한, “앞으로도 계속해서 윈-윈 관계를 유지하며 국내 중소기업 파트너사들과의 협업 증진을 이루어 가기 위해서는 정부의 지속적인 관심과 지원이 중요하다” 라고 덧붙였다.” 

중소벤처기업부 권칠승 장관은 기조연설을 통해 글로벌 기술 경쟁이 심화되는 상황에서 안정을 바탕으로 지속적인 경제성장을 위해서는 양국 간 긴밀한 협력이 더욱 중요해져 가고 있음을 강조하는 한편, “반도체, 5G 통신, 메타버스 등 차세대 성장동력 분야에서 글로벌 선두기업인 퀄컴이 국내 중소벤처기업들과 파트너십 성과를 전시하는 동시에 향후 협력방향을 논의하는 이번 포럼은 매우 의미가 깊다”고 소감을 밝혔다. 권칠승 장관은 또한, “오늘 상생협력 포럼의 성과를 확산하기 위해 암참과의 협력을 더욱 강화해 나가겠다”고 밝히며, “한·미 양국 기업들의 원활한 비즈니스 지원을 위해 '한·미 기업지원협의회'를 이달 內 구축하여 운영하겠다” 라고 덧붙였다. 

권장관의 축사에 이어 홍정민 국회 산업통상자원중소벤처기업위원회 위원은, “글로벌 기업과 중소기업 간 상생협력은 빠르게 변화는 산업환경에 대응하고 강력한 시너지를 바탕으로 한 단계 도약할 수 있는 기회가 될 수 있다는 점에서 매우 중요하다.” 라고 말하며, “외투기업- 중소기업 간 상생협력이 보다 강화될 수 있도록 정책 마련과 입법에 노력하겠다.” 라고 밝혔다. 

마이클 캐베나 주한미국대사관 경제과 참사관은 이어진 축사를 통해, “정부 차원에서 한·미 중소기업 모두를 위한 공정한 규제와 경쟁의 장을 조성하여 중소기업에 양질의 기업환경을 제공하는 것이 우리의 역할”임을 강조했다. 

이날 포럼에서는 IOT 및 자동차·모빌리티 분야와 관련된 중소기업과의 협업이 집중적으로 다뤄졌다. 퀄컴코리아, 한국 GM 등의 글로벌 기업과 국내 7개 기업들이 참여한 가운데 각 기업의 파트너십에 대한 발표, 우수 협력 사례와 향후 추세 예측 등의 논의에 이어, 법무법인 세종 황성익 파트너 변호사가 좌장을 맡아 패널 토론을 진행하였다. 이번 행사는 암참이 개최한 두 번째 중소기업 상생협업 포럼으로, 첫 번째 포럼은 지난 5G와 AI와 파트너십에 초점을 맞춰 2020년에 열린 바 있다.
