AMCHAM Chairman, James Kim Leads Exclusive Fireside Chat with Korean Presidential Candidate Yoon Suk Yeol

To explore measures to further promote trade between the U.S. and Korea and 

create a global business environment to position Korea as a Regional Headquarters of Asia

December 28, 2021 – This afternoon, the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a special meeting with Yoon Suk Yeol, Presidential Candidate for People Power Party, at the Conrad Hotel Seoul.

At this event, Mr. Yoon met with a delegation of U.S. companies in Korea to discuss his future policies as the next presidential candidate as well as his vision for creating a global investment environment to enhance South Korea's competitiveness and boosting trade between the U.S. and South Korea.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “We hope that Mr. Yoon will play an important role in promoting foreign direct investment and establishing policies to make Korea the headquarters of many companies in Asia. Active support from the Korean government is needed in areas such as labor, taxation, and regulatory environment. Now is the right time for such discussions.” He added, “AMCHAM is a non-political and non-partisan organization. It is an honor to discuss ways to further accelerate economic growth across Korea.”

Presidential candidate Yoon Suk Yeol said, “The Korea-U.S. alliance is a key pillar of the global economy and security. There are still unstable factors such as the spread of the COVID- 19 Omicron mutations and supply chain disturbances, but we must cooperate to turn these crises into opportunities. We believe that the two countries can be reborn as partners to strengthen cooperation in high-tech industries such as nuclear power plants, AI, bio, semiconductors, and next-generation batteries," he said. He added, "In order to attract active investment from companies, it is important to remove uncertainties related to government policies to ensure stability in the decision-making process. We will do our best to improve unreasonable regulations that hinder market efficiency."

In the Fireside Chat, with AMCHAM Chairman & CEO Kim, Mr. Yoon emphasized the importance of foreign investment and the need to create a fair corporate environment that meets global standards. He pledged to actively create a global investment environment where creativity, efficiency, innovation, and entrepreneurship are respected, while also seeking to strengthen R&D cooperation by utilizing Korea's excellent ICT environment, infrastructure, and human resources. Furthermore, Mr. Yoon addressed global issues and trends, such as stronger ESG and climate change initiatives, and improved D&I (diversity and inclusion) and gender pay gap in the workplace.

This event is part of AMCHAM’s meeting series with the major presidential candidates for the upcoming election in 2022.

2021년 12월 28일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오후 윤석 열 국민의힘 대통령 후보를 초청하여 특별 간담회를 개최하였다. 콘래드 서울 호텔에서 진행된 이번 특별 간담회를 통해 윤 후보는 주한 미국 기업 대표단과 만나, 차기 대선 후보로서의 미래 정책과 대한민국의 경쟁력 제고를 위한 글로벌 투자 환경 조성 및 한미 양국 간 교역 활성화 방안 등 경제 성장을 중점으로 이야기를 이어나갔다. 

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 간담회에 앞선 환영사를 통해, "외국인 직접투자 증진과 대한민국을 많은 기업들의 아시아 지역본부로 만들기 위한 정책 수립에 있어 윤 후보께서 중요한 역할을 해 주실 것을 기대한다. 외국인 직접투자 증진을 위해서는 노동·조세·규제환경 등의 분야에서 한국 정부의 적극적인 지원이 절대적이며, 바로 지금이 이러한 논의를 할 적기.” 라고 말했다. 또한 “암참은 비정치적이고 초당적인 조직으로, 오늘의 대화를 통해 대한민국 전역에 걸친 경제 성장을 더욱 가속화할 수 있는 방안에 대한 논의를 나눌 수 있어 영광이다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 

윤석열 후보는 모두발언을 통해, “한미동맹은 글로벌 경제와 안보의 핵심축.” 이라고 말하며, “오미크론 변이확산, 공급망 교란 등 불안요소가 상존해 있지만, 굳건한 한미동맹의 기반아래 상호 협력하여 위기를 기회로 바꿔야한다. 한미 양국은 원전, AI, 바이오, 반도체, 차세대 배터리 등 신기술 첨단산업의 협력을 강화함으로써 미래의 먹거리 창출과 지속가능한 번영의 동반자로 거듭날 수 있다고 믿는다.” 라고 밝혔다. 그는 또한 이어, “기업의 적극 투자를 이끌어 내기 위해서는 정부정책과 관련된 불확실성을 제거해 의사결정과정의 안정성을 확보해 주는 것이 무엇보다 중요하다.” 라고 덧붙이며, “시장의 효율성을 저해하는 불합리한 규제들을 개선해 나가는데 최선을 다하겠다.” 라고 말했다. 이어진 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사와의 대담을 통해 윤석열 후보는 외국인 투자의 중요성을 강조하며, 이를 위해서는 글로벌 스탠다드에 부합하는 공정한 기업환경 조성이 무엇보다 필요하다고 말했다. 그는 궁극적으로 자유와 창의, 효율성, 혁신, 기업가 정신이 존중받는 글로벌 투자환경을 적극적으로 조성함과 동시에, 한국의 우수한 ICT환경, 인프라 및 인적자원을 활용하여 연구개발 협력강화를 모색할 것을 약속했다. 윤 후보는 또한, ESG 및 기후 변화 이니셔티브, 직장 내 D&I(다양성과 포용성) 및 성별 임금 격차 개선 등의 글로벌 이슈에 대해서도 심도 깊은 대화를 이어나갔다. 

이번 간담회는 2022년 대선을 앞두고 암참이 주선하여 오고 있는 대선주자들과의 간담회 시리즈의 일환이다.
