LG Energy signs multi-billion-dollar LFP battery deal with Renault   By Hyung-Kyu Kim, The Korea Economic Daily - LG Energy Solution Ltd., the world’s second-largest battery maker, has clinched a multi-billion-dollar deal to supply LFP batteries for low-end electric vehicles to Renault Group’s EV unit Ampere. The South Korean battery maker said on Tuesday the two sides signed the deal at Renault’s headquarters in Paris on Monday, attended by executives, including Suh Won-joon, executive vice president and head of the advanced automotive battery division at LG, and Josep Maria Recasens, Renault Group’s chief strategy officer and Ampere’s chief operating officer. Under the five-year contract, LG will provide LFP, or lithium ion phosphate, batteries to Ampere from late 2025 through 2030, with a total capacity of some 39 GWh, enough to produce 590,000 battery EVs. The batteries, to be manufactured at LG Energy’s Poland facility, will power Ampere's next-generation EV models. The deal’s value wasn’t known, but industry watchers said it would be trillions of won, or multi-billion dollars. “We will provide the best customer value to Ampere through our overwhelming technological prowess and quality,” said LG Energy’s Suh. François Provost, Renault’s chief procurement, partnership and public affairs officer said: “We worked hand in hand with LG to set up an integrated value chain in Europe. Our long-term relationships have enabled us to build this unique solution in terms of technology and competitiveness.” KOREA’S FIRST MEGA-DEAL BEATING LFP SUPER POWER CHINA LG said the latest deal represents its and Korea’s first large-scale LFP battery supply deal in Europe, one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets. Korea’s three major battery makers – LG Energy, SK On Co. and Samsung SDI Co. – have concentrated on expensive nickel-cobalt-manganese (NCM) cells. However, they are now shifting gears to produce low-end LFP cells on growing demand from Tesla Inc. and other major EV makers. LFP batteries are mostly made by Chinese companies, including Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Ltd. (CATL), the world’s top battery maker, and BYD Co. LFP cells are lower in energy density but cheaper to make compared to other types such as NCM batteries, and thus more suitable for low-end EV models. LFP batteries are also more stable, meaning less vulnerable to fire. LG Energy has switched part of its energy story system (ESS) production lines at its plant in Nanjing, China to produce LFP batteries with a plan to begin mass production in 2025. CELL-TO-PACK SOLUTIONS LG said it is providing Renault’s pure EV player Ampere with pouch-type LFP batteries made with cutting-edge cell-to-pack (CTP) manufacturing technology. CTP refers to a technology that bypasses the module stage to make cells into a pack structure. Compared with the general battery structure, the module-free structure reduces weight and manufacturing costs and increases space utilization, according to LG. LG said it is the industry’s first to apply the technology to pouch-type batteries. CTP-applied pouch-type batteries boast about 5% higher energy density per weight compared with prismatic CTP tech batteries. LG said it has also enhanced battery safety by increasing the toughness of the battery pack and applying heat transfer prevention technology. LG’S EXPANDED BATTERY PORTFOLIO With the latest supply deal, LG has expanded its product portfolio in pouch-type batteries encompassing various chemistries such as high-nickel NCMA, high-voltage mid-nickel NCM and LFP. LG said a wide range of products will allow it to serve various consumer needs from premium EVs to more affordable entry-level segment vehicles. “Through this partnership with Ampere, our unrivaled product competitiveness and differentiated customer value have been recognized once again,” said LG Energy Chief Executive Kim Dong-myung. The CEO, also known in the West by his English name David Kim, said: “Starting with the European market, we will keep expanding our supply of automotive LFP batteries.” LG is also an active battery player in the US, where it operates its own battery plants and a joint venture, Ultium Cells LLC, with General Motors. Source: https://www.kedglobal.com/batteries/newsView/ked202407020005

맥도날드, 시각장애인 위한 키오스크 기능 직영 매장 100% 도입   뉴시스 구예지 기자 - 한국맥도날드가 시각장애인을 위한 키오스크 음성 안내 장치를 전국 직영 매장에 100% 도입 완료했다고 2일 밝혔다. 한국맥도날드는 시각장애인 고객에게 편리한 매장 경험을 제공하기 위해 지난해 9월 미국맥도날드에 이어 전 세계에서 2번째, 아시아에서는 최초로 시각장애인을 위한 음성 안내 장치를 도입했다. 이는 국내 QSR(Quick Service Restaurant) 업계에서도 최초의 사례로 시각장애인의 접근성을 크게 높이며 모두가 즐길 수 있는 공간으로서의 의미를 더했다. 맥도날드는 지난해 키오스크 음성 안내 기능의 도입을 시작한 이후 지속적으로 적용 매장을 확대해 6월 말 전 직영 매장에 도입을 완료했다. 시각장애인 고객들은 전국 직영 매장 어느 곳에서나 음성 안내를 통해 제품 정보를 파악하고 원하는 메뉴를 자유롭게 주문할 수 있게 됐다. 해당 기능 도입으로 키오스크 하단에 개인 이어폰을 연결한 뒤 터치패드로 기기를 조작하면 화면의 모든 구성 요소에 대해 음성으로 안내받을 수 있어 시각장애인이 스스로 메뉴를 주문할 수 있게 됐다. 기본적인 메뉴명과 가격 뿐 만 아니라 칼로리 등 세부 사항까지 제공된다.  맥도날드는 시각장애인 고객이 키오스크의 위치를 찾기까지 불편함이 없도록 전 직영 매장 바닥에 점자 블록을 부착했고 아울러 주문 시 테이블 번호를 입력하면 직원이 주문한 메뉴를 자리로 가져다주는 테이블 서비스도 제공하고 있다. 테이블 번호는 점자로도 표기돼 있으며 주문 과정에서 직원의 도움을 받을 수 있는 '장애인 도움호출벨'도 마련해 두는 등 매장 곳곳에 세심한 배려를 기울이고 있다. 맥도날드 관계자는 "시각장애로 키오스크 주문에 어려움을 겪었던 고객분들이 전국 직영 매장 어디서나 보다 편리해진 음성 안내 키오스크를 이용할 수 있게 돼 기쁘게 생각한다"며 "업계 선도 기업인 맥도날드의 도입을 계기로 더 많은 곳에서 장애인 고객들을 위한 서비스가 마련되길 바란다"고 말했다. 출처: https://www.newsis.com/view/NISX20240702_0002794766

SK Hynix pledges W103tr for AI chips by 2028   By Jie Ye-eun, The Korea Herald - SK Group said Sunday that it will secure 80 trillion won ($57.9 billion) by 2026 to accelerate its push for two growth drivers: chips and artificial intelligence. SK hynix, its chipmaking unit, alone plans to invest 103 trillion won by 2028, with 80 percent of the new funding focusing on AI chips, including high-bandwidth memory, a burgeoning area where the chip giant has secured an earlier edge. Telecom carrier SK Telecom and internet service provider SK Broadband will also invest a combined 3.4 trillion won into the data center business over the next five years. A series of new investment plans were unveiled on the day following a meeting of top executives on Friday and Saturday at the group’s research center in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. “Here in the US, AI is everywhere,” Chairman Chey Tae-won, who is currently in the US on a business trip, said via a video link during the meeting. “We should consolidate our leadership in the AI value chain from service to infrastructure by leveraging all the capabilities across affiliates.” Among tech leaders the SK chief met last week were OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella. “When it comes to green, chemical and bio areas, we need to do selection and concentration based on a thorough review of market trends and our technological prowess,” he added, hinting at a possible strategic shift after years of aggressive expansion in the renewable energy and biotech fields. During the two days of meetings, some 20 top executives reviewed the performance of key businesses and set the future direction, including action plans across companies. The group’s strategic focus will be enhancing its AI value chain from AI chips to data centers to AI services to secure its global competitiveness amid heated AI competition among its tech rivals. A semiconductor committee has also been set up within the SK Supex Council, the group’s top decision-making body, with SK hynix President and CEO Kwak Noh-jung taking the helm. Also on the agenda were ways to elevate profitability and improve operational efficiency. As part of its efforts, the group plans to secure 30 trillion won in cash in the coming three years and control the debt ratio below 100 percent. The group posted a loss of 10 trillion won in earnings before tax last year, but this year it aims to turn a profit of about 22 trillion won. ​Hyundai Motor's envisioned US plant in Georgia to prioritize EVs: CEO   The Korea Times - A new car manufacturing plant by Hyundai Motor, Korea's largest automaker, under construction in the U.S. state of Georgia will prioritize producing electric vehicles despite a temporary fluctuation in market demand, the company's CEO said Monday. "Even though the demand for electric vehicles is temporarily fluctuating more than expected, we believe our direction toward electric vehicles is correct," said Chang Jae-hoon, president and CEO of Hyundai Motor, when asked by reporters in Seoul on how the company plans to operate Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America (HMGMA), which is currently under construction in Georgia. "For now, electric vehicles are the top priority," Chang said. The Hyundai CEO was attending a business event hosted by the Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, who was visiting Korea to promote his state's strong business ties with Korean companies. Georgia has successfully attracted high-profile investments from big Korean businesses, such as Hyundai Motor, SK, Hanwha and LG, in recent years. HMGMA is scheduled to be completed in the fourth quarter. The company also plans to produce hybrid vehicles at the plant. "Georgia is not only a key area for our company but also the region where the most Korean companies have expanded, making it significantly important in terms of investment scale," Chang added. During his Korean trip, which began last week, Kemp also met with key executives of other Korean businesses, including those of SK Group and LG Group. Hyundai Motor and SK On, SK Group's battery arm, are also building a battery plant in Georgia with an annual production capacity of 35 gigawatt hours.
