SK telecom to unveil investment strategies at town hall meeting
By Lee Dong-in and Minu Kim, Pulse by Maeil Business - SK
telecom CEO Ryu Young-sang is set to hold a town hall meeting on Wednesday to
highlight the company’s strategic emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI)
capabilities.
The event is scheduled to take place at SKT Tower in Seoul,
with employees who cannot attend in person joining via internal broadcasting.
According to sources on Tuesday, the town hall marks the
first such meeting for SK telecom following the strategic management meeting
held by SK Group at the SKMS Institute in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, on June 28
and 29.
The meeting, led by SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won, included
key figures such as Senior Vice Chairman Chey Jae-won, SK SUPEX Council
Chairman Chey Chang-won, and CEOs from over 20 major affiliates.
SK Group has decided to focus on improving profitability and
optimizing business structures, with significant investments in AI and
semiconductors.
The group plans to generate funds through Operation
Improvement (OI) initiatives, making the actions to be taken by SK telecom
during this town hall meeting highly anticipated.
SK telecom has been consistently investing in AI. Recently,
the company signed a $200 million investment deal in convertible preferred
shares with Smart Global Holdings (SGH), an American AI data center solutions
company. Last month, SK telecom also invested $10 million in Perplexity, an AI
search engine startup based in the U.S.
“This town hall meeting is a follow-up to the one held in
March, marking the company’s 40th anniversary,” said an SK telecom official.
“It will be an opportunity to share the strategic discussions from the
management meeting with our employees.”
