AMCHAM meets Georgia senator to discuss business cooperation with Korea

By Yi Whan-woo, The Korea Times - A group of American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) representatives met with Democratic U.S. Senator Jon Ossoff of Georgia, who is currently visiting Korea, and discussed ways to enhance business cooperation between the two countries, AMCHAM Korea said Friday.

Ossoff's Korea trip, which lasts from Monday to Saturday, drew the attention of business circles here, as the southern state has been at the center of large Korean investments in the United States.

Georgia is home to two battery plants being built by SK Innovation and an electric car assembly factory to be constructed by Kia, all in accordance with U.S. President Joe Biden's initiatives to rebuild American manufacturing businesses.

The ongoing projects by SK Innovation and Kia make Georgia a home to the factories and other facilities of more than 110 Korean enterprises.

AMCHAM Korea Chairman and CEO James Kim, as well as the organization's other representatives, called Georgia "a trailblazer in deepening U.S.-Korea relations" and said that it promoted bilateral economic cooperation in innovative industries by offering ground-breaking incentives. "Korea is now one of Georgia's largest trading partners, with multiple Korean conglomerates choosing to set up in Georgia," AMCHAM Korea said in a press release. The AMCHAM Korea leader said that the senator's visit is "a testament to the powerful economic partnership between the U.S. and Korea." Kim added, "The state of Georgia offers unique opportunities for both U.S. companies in Korea and Korean companies striving to expand abroad."

The senator addressed that, through his multiple meetings with Korean businesspeople and politicians, as well as with the AMCHAM Korea and U.S. business leaders, the two sides "have made significant progress toward securing additional South Korean investments in Georgia and charted the course toward greater opportunity for Georgia businesses in South Korea." He specifically noted progress in the fields of renewable energy, digital technology and semiconductors.
