[Contribution] US, Korea joining hands to return to normal beyond pandemicThis is a very important moment when our two countries are facing common challenges. The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact our daily lives as well as the global economy. Companies are faced with the immediate need to not only digitize their operations but also rebuild secure supply chains and diversify. There are also rising geopolitical challenges in the Indo-Pacific region that need to be addressed. These various challenges have also brought the U.S. and Korea closer together. Our two nations have never been so aligned on visions and values; such as commitments to a rules-based international order, economic and social justice, and environmental sustainability. It is now time for us to join forces to pursue the same goals. As the two presidents hold their first summit tomorrow, I would like to suggest three items from the perspective of the business community that should be driving their agenda. The COVID-19 pandemicAt the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Korea was dubbed a global "success case" due to the government's proactive, thorough, and transparent containment efforts. Especially with the strategy of the three "Ts" ― testing, tracking and treatment ― Korea's methods were labeled a template for how countries should respond as the virus spread around the globe. It is important for us to now continue this momentum into a full economic recovery. While Korea has taken significant strides, the hardest hit industries such as travel and tourism continue to suffer, and it is important for the Moon government to collaborate with the new Biden administration to take a different approach to getting back to business. More specifically, widespread vaccination against COVID-19 will be key not only for Korea's public health but also in restoring trade, travel and business activities that are crucial for Korea's economy. The U.S. and Korea need to work together on mutual vaccine recognition so that those who received their vaccinations in the U.S. can be exempt from the 14-day quarantine when returning to Korea. This will provide a critical boost to Korea's travel and tourism industries while enabling a resumption of business travel that is important for continued foreign investment into Korea. It may also accelerate the rate at which the population becomes vaccinated. The faster all of us get vaccinated, the faster we can return to normal, both in our daily lives and in business. Supply chain and economic diversification The COVID-19 pandemic has also illuminated the need for economic diversity and robust supply chains. At the start of the pandemic, companies that heavily relied on one partner for the smooth flow of their supply chains faced delays and other difficulties. All companies were forced to reevaluate the state of their supply chains and pursue diversification to return operations to normal. We believe Korea can play a key role as a leading destination for investment by companies who are seeking to diversify. The Korean government has become more accessible to the business community, especially multinational companies, in identifying barriers to business and proposing solutions. AMCHAM is assisting in optimizing Korea's business, tax and regulatory environment to this end. The summit can be a meaningful moment to convey that bilateral investment is a key pillar of our economic partnership that helps to ensure the prosperity and security of both countries. The ongoing semiconductor shortage is a case in point. Never before has any single product had such importance to the economic stability and security of a nation. In a recent meeting that President Biden held on improving the manufacturing capability of semiconductors in the U.S, Samsung was the only Korean company invited to attend. This meeting reflects not only the urgency of the semiconductor issue, but also Samsung's vital role as an investor in and strategic partner for the U.S. It is critically important to both countries that the top leadership at Samsung be an active participant in investment decisions in the U.S. going forward. Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance Both President Biden and President Moon have made environmental sustainability and economic justice the centerpieces of their agendas. U.S. companies are leading the way on issues such as environmental sustainability, diversity in corporate leadership and social responsibility. Many of these companies have implemented ESG initiatives and programs into their Korea vision, and Korean companies have also begun to build upon this trend. ESG is not just the smart thing to do, but the right thing to do, and a partnership between the U.S. and Korea in this realm is critical. Public-private dialogue that would allow the countries to share and adopt best practices is the logical next step. AMCHAM is also ready to play a central role through our newly launched ESG Committee, led by CEOs of major multinational companies in Korea. We recently held our very first U.S.-Korea ESG Forum, which discussed ESG and best practices from a global perspective. ESG can be a powerful new potential partnership between our two countries. This summit is a testament to the rock-solid alliance between the U.S. and Korea. It is a great opportunity for the two countries to reinforce their shared values and goals, and engage in meaningful, productive dialogue. AMCHAM will continue to support the new relationship between President Biden and President Moon, and do our best to create a mutually beneficial economic partnership based on fair and free trade policies. The U.S.-Korea partnership holds great value not only in terms of security and diplomacy but also for the economies of both countries. 암참, 다양성·포용성 설문조사…"美 기업 성별 목표의식, 국내 다국적 기업 중 최고" 뉴시스 옥승욱 기자 - 주한미국상공회의소(암참)가 최근 회원사인 모건필립스코리아와 제휴해 다양성·포용성(D&I)에 대한 설문 조사를 실시했다고 29일 밝혔다. 본 조사결과에 따르면 국내 다국적 기업 중 미국 기업들이 상대적으로 성별 다양성을 기업의 핵심가치로 추진하겠다는 의지를 강하게 드러내고 있는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 한국 내 다국적 기업의 전사적 다양성·포용성(D&I) 전략이 국내에서 어떻게 현지화돼 실현되고 또한 인지돼 오고 있는지를 살펴보기 위한 첫 조사이다. 성별 다양성 가치 추구가 성공적인 사업 성과로 이어질 수 있다는데 응답자의 87%가 동의했다. 미국 기업에 근무하는 응답자 중 89%가 자국 기업이 기업의 핵심 가치로서 성별 다양성 촉진에 강한 의지를 보였다고 답했다. 반면 유럽 기업은 72%, 한국 기업은 38%에 불과했다. 이는 한국 기업에 비해 미국 기업들이 주도적으로 다양성 및 포용성 가치 추구에 앞장서고 있다는 의미로 해석된다. 다양성 및 포용성 가치에 대한 소통에 있어, 회사의 글로벌 차원에서의 노력과 현지화 노력에도 큰 차이를 보이는 것으로 나타났다. 응답자의 48%가 글로벌 프로그램이 잘 소통되고 있다는데 적극 동의한 반면, 19%만이 글로벌 프로그램이 무난히 현지화되고 있다는데 강하게 동의한다고 답했다. 지난 5년간 양성평등 인식의 개선 여부를 묻는 질문에 응답자의 69%가 찬성했다. 다만 개선 유형에 대해서는 남녀 응답자간 인식차가 있었다. 남성의 경우 40%, 여성의 경우 28%가 모든 직원이 승진에 있어 공정한 대우를 받는다고 느꼈다. 남성의 79%, 여성의 70%가 보상 차원에서 공정한 대우를 받는다고 느꼈다고 답했다. 응답자의 62%는 여성이 유리천장을 무너뜨리는데 있어 가장 큰 장벽으로 한국의 문화적, 사회적 규범을 꼽았다. 절대적으로 적은 여성 리더의 숫자뿐 아니라, 유연한 업무방식의 부족도 한국에서 성 평등을 가져오는 장애물로 인식되고 있다. 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 "설문조사를 통해 국내 글로벌 기업의 D&I 추진 현황을 확인할 수 있었던 것은 놀라운 경험이었다"며, “이번 설문이 회원사들의 다양성 정책 강화와 글로벌 D&I 프로그램의 현지화를 위한 방향 설정에 도움이 되길 바란다"고 말했다. 출처: https://newsis.com/view/?id=NISX20210429_0001425123&cID=13001&pID=13000

주한미국상의 이사진 만난 이재명, “경기도를 기업활동 전진기지로 활용하겠다”주한미국상공회의소 회장단 방문.[경기도 제공] 헤럴드경제(수원) 박정규 기자 - 이재명 경기도지사가 주한미국상공회의소(암참·AMCHAM) 이사들을 만나 “경기도를 기업활동의 전진기지로 활용하도록 하겠다”면서 적극적인 기업 지원을 약속하며 경기도에 투자유치를 당부했다. 이재명 지사는 26일 경기도청에서 제임스 김(James Kim) 주한미국상공회의소 회장, 제프리 존스(Jeffrey Jones) 암참 이사회 회장, 짐 폴테섹(Jim Falteisek) 한국쓰리엠 대표, 권오형 퀄컴 코리아 사장과 오동욱 한국화이자제약 대표이사 등 암참 이사회 관계자와 간담회를 가졌다. 한미 양국 간 경제협력과 무역증진을 위한 굳건한 파트너십을 유지하는데 중추적인 역할을 수행해 온 암참에 감사를 표하고 경기도 외국기업 유치, 기업 활동에 도움이 될 수 있는 정책 등 상호 협력증진 방안을 논의하기 위해 마련됐다. 이재명 지사는 “(국내에 들어 온) 미국 기업 중에 상당수가 경기도에 투자하고 있는데 지역경제에 크게 도움이 되고 있다. 우리 입장에서는 반도체, 디스플레이 같은 소재부품장비와 관련된 투자 유치에 관심이 높다”며 “회원 기업들이 경기도에 투자하고 경제적으로 성취하고 지역경제도 함께 발전하는 좋은 관계가 되길 바란다. 도 입장에서도 관내 투자에 대해서 적극적으로 가능한 지원을 아끼지 않겠다”고 말했다. 제임스 김 암참 회장은 “한국 3M과 한국화이자 제약, 퀄컴코리아는 한국을 위해 큰 역할을 하고 있고 경기도와도 끈끈한 연이 있는 것으로 알고 있다”며 “갈수록 한국의 중요성이 더 커지고 있는 중요한 시점에 더 긴밀한 관계를 구축할 수 있으면 좋겠다. 경기도와 앞으로도 계속 협력해서 상호 간 많은 발전이 있길 기원한다”고 화답했다. 이어 참석자들은 경기도 경제정책과 관련된 의견을 자유롭게 교환했다. 짐 폴테섹 한국쓰리엠 대표는 “쓰리엠은 한국에서 특히 스템(과학․기술․공학․수학) 분야에 종사하고 있는 여성들의 지위를 좀 더 많이 향상시키고자 노력하고 있다”며 “앞으로 경기도와 협력해서 다양한 사람들이 이런 분야에 종사할 수 있도록, 관련 인증도 더욱 확대하도록 했으면 한다”고 말했다. 권오형 퀄컴 코리아 사장은 “퀄컴은 삼성전자와 5G 관련 기술 및 스마트폰 기술을 개발하고 있고, 5G 칩을 대부분 삼성전자 기흥 및 화성 단지에서 생산하고 있다. 수원 사무소에는 100여명이 근무하고 있는데 11월말까지 20%를 더 확장할 계획”이라며 “지난달부터 경기창조경제혁신센터와 5G 관련 협력을 해 경기도에서 많은 지원을 해주셨으면 좋겠다”고 밝혔다. 오동욱 한국화이자제약 대표이사는 “경기도에 좋은 투자를 하고 상생할 수 있는 사례를 만들어 나가길 희망하고 향후 투자혁신을 위한 관련 제도 등에 대해 논의를 이어나가고 싶다”고 말했다. 제프리 존스 암참 이사회 회장은 “자율주행과 관련해 퀄컴과 협조하면 모범적인 자율주행 프로젝트를 만들고 부처간 분쟁의 해결방안을 만들 수 있을 것”이라고 조언했다. 이 지사는 “경기도는 첨단산업을 중심으로 외국인투자 기업유치에 매우 큰 관심과 애정을 가지고 있다”며 “외국인투자전용임대단지나 외국인 투자에 대한 세제, 행정지원, 여러 가지 장치들을 가지고 있으니 많이 활용해주길 바란다. 해당 시군을 포함해서 경기도의 도움이나 지원이 필요하면 전담조직(TF)을 만들어서라도 적극 지원하겠다”고 밝혔다. 이어 “기업에 대한 최고의 지원은 자유롭게 경쟁할 수 있는 환경을 만들어주는 것이라고 생각한다”며 “(행정이) 불필요하게 절차를 복잡하게 하거나 규제하지 않고 공정하게 경쟁할 수 있게 한다면 기업이 얼마든지 성장할 수 있고 전체적으로 경제가 성장할 수 있다”고 덧붙였다. 그러면서 이 지사는 타 지역에서 행정검토로 지지부진하던 사업을 전담조직을 만들어 2년 6개월 만에 개장한 시흥 웨이브파크 사례를 소개하며 “우리 지역에도 도움이 되고 본인들의 사업에도 도움이 되는 아이템이 있다면 언제든지 제안해달라. 경기도를 기업활동의 전진기지로 활용하도록 하겠다”고 강조했다. 한편 지난해 말 기준 경기도에 투자한 미국 기업은 378개사로 전체 해외기업의 12.5%에 해당한다. 이를 통해 1,726명의 고용창출을 달성했다. 미국기업의 경기도 외투단지 직접투자(FDI)는 1억5천만 달러(1,660억 원)에 이른다. 지난해 코로나19 확산에도 경기도의 대미 교역은 11.7% 증가했으며 반도체, 자동차, 무선통신기기 등 대미수출도 호조를 보였다. 출처: http://news.heraldcorp.com/view.php?ud=20210426000838

As being responsible and socially conscious in doing business became more critical during the COVID-19 pandemic, ESG has emerged as key criteria to measure the broader impact of activities to improve corporate prioritization of these targets. Through the committee, AMCHAM plans to help strengthen the efforts of its member companies to maintain sustainable management, according to the statement. "We are proud to announce the launch of our first-ever ESG committee. As ESG has evolved to become a key strategy for corporate growth, I hope this committee will serve as the main platform for AMCHAM member companies during this exciting transformation," AMCHAM CEO James Kim was quoted as saying. The committee is led by Jim Falteisek, managing director of 3M Korea, Andrew Ryu of DOW Korea, and Balaka Niyazee of P&G Korea. It will develop directions and strategies by acting as a platform for discussion involving ESG issues and initiatives in the global business community here. "3M has committed significant effort to achieve excellence in environmental stewardship, social equity and justice, and corporate governance. We are looking forward to amplifying our work in concert with our AMCHAM peers through our leadership in this new ESG committee," Falteisek was quoted as saying in the statement. "As a global leading materials science company, Dow is fully committed to delivering a sustainable future for the world through our materials science expertise and collaboration with partners," Dow Korea country manager Ryu said. To officially launch the committee, AMCHAM will host an ESG seminar May 13 with the participation of the New York Times and the Federation of Korean Industries (FKI). [SCREEN CAPTURE] By Esther Chung, Korea JoongAng Daily - Colombian President Iván Duque Márquez emphasized growing opportunities in trade and investment across the Americas and Korea in an online conference hosted Wednesday by the chambers of commerce in Bogota and Seoul and the Embassy of Colombia in Korea. “Colombia, the United States and Korea have been brother nations since the time we fought together in the Korean War,” President Duque said upon joining the online forum Colombia-Korea: Commercial strategies for the Americas. “We have a history of standing side by side in a difficult time, and I believe that the three nations can join forces in the same spirit in this time of the pandemic […] and emerge with more competitive edge in our markets,” said President Duque. Near-shoring was one of the ideas put forward by the president during the forum, as well as by executives of the American Chambers of Commerce in Seoul and Bogota, Korea Chamber of Commerce and Bogota Chamber of Commerce. “We are seeing a growing interest [among foreign investors] in the pharmaceutical and agro-industrial sectors in Colombia,” said María Claudia Lacouture, executive director of American Chamber of Commerce (Amcham) in Colombia, in response to a question during the forum about which sectors of Colombian market can function as hub to the Americas. “I think there are [several] areas where we can see synergy, considering the markets of Colombia, Korea and the United States,” said James Kim, chairman and CEO of Amcham in Korea. “One is digital transformation. Different companies have responded to the pandemic with digital transformation of many levels. Everyone is talking about digital transformation, but not many know how to execute it. I think that’s an area that Colombia could focus on. “Green growth is a hot item everywhere these days,” Kim added. “President [Joe] Biden and President Moon [Jae-in] are talking about it, and Colombia also unveiled a green road map last year. [...] This would be another area to see collaboration among the three countries going forward.” Korea and Colombia signed an FTA five years ago, the third of those signed between Korea and a Latin American nation. Trade between Korea and Colombia grew from $12.8 billion in 2016 to $18.6 billion in 2019, according to Amcham Korea. Some 20 Korean companies, such as Hyosung, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics and Posco International, have invested in Colombia, according to the chamber of commerce. The two nations will be celebrating their 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties next year. “As we discuss our next 20 years of Korea-Colombia commercial relations, the discussion will not only be about the two nations, but a dialogue between continents,” said Juan Carlos Caiza, ambassador of Colombia to Korea. The forum was also joined by Colombia’s Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism José Manuel Restrepo, Executive President of Bogota Chamber of Commerce Nicolás Uribe Rueda, Vice President of Korea Chamber of Commerce Woo Tae-hee, Chairperson of Presidential Committee on the Fourth Industrial Revolution of Korea Yoon Sung-roh and Executive President of Procolombia Flavia Santoro.
