AMCHAM’s Doorknock Visit Highlights Unwavering U.S.-Korea Partnership

- AMCHAM successfully concludes “Doorknock” program between September 9-12, 2024 -

Strategic discussions with high-level U.S. government stakeholders ahead of U.S. presidential election and the 2025 APEC Summit reinforce economic cooperation between the two countries

September 27, 2024 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) successfully concluded the Doorknock visit to Washington D.C., held from September 9-12. During this year’s Doorknock, the AMCHAM delegation engaged with 14 offices of members of Congress and senators from 12 different states, as well as 10 U.S. government agencies, including the National Economic Council and the Office of the Vice President.

This year's delegation, which included senior executives from key AMCHAM member companies, featured prominent Korean firms such as LG Energy Solution, and POSCO, along with BAE Systems, Corning, Google, Lockheed Martin, Intuitive Surgical, Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers, and UPS. The group engaged in high-level meetings with important policymakers and stakeholders in the U.S. government and think tanks to advocate for stronger U.S.-Korea economic and strategic partnerships.

Throughout the visit, the delegation participated in a series of important engagements focused on key areas of mutual interest between the U.S. and Korea. These included regional peace and security, strategic competition, and supply chain resilience, as well as enhancing Korea’s role as a leading business hub in the Asia-Pacific region. The program included meetings with Rep. Andy Kim (D-NJ), Ambassador Matthew Murray from the U.S. Senior Official for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) at the U.S. Department of State, and Jed Royal, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Indo-Pacific Security Affairs at the Department of Defense.

AMCHAM's advocacy efforts on economic and trade issues were demonstrated through in-depth dialogues with Rep. Rick Larsen (D-WA), Sen. Todd Young (R-IN), Sen. Charles Grassley (R-IA), Rep. Ami Bera, M.D. (D-CA), Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL) and members of the House Ways and Means Trade Subcommittee. Meetings with Sen. Jon Ossoff (D-GA), the office of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), and various other congressional offices centered on the KORUS FTA and the need for regulatory harmonization.

Additionally, high-level engagements included a breakfast at the Heritage Foundation, led by Jeff Smith and Brent Sadler, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) with Dr. John Hamre and Dr. Victor Cha, as well as sessions with the National Economic Council, the Office of the Vice President, and the Bureau of Industry & Security. The visit concluded with a celebratory reception at Oracle's Townhouse.

James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, said, “Given that our visit took place just a few weeks before the U.S. elections and during the second presidential debate, we were able to gauge the current sentiments surrounding the U.S. political landscape firsthand.” He continued, “A clear takeaway from our meetings was the strong consensus that U.S.-Korea relations will remain vital, regardless of the election outcome. South Korea’s growing influence in the Asia Pacific region and beyond is being recognized by key policymakers in the U.S.”

He added, “A nearly unanimous message from U.S. government representatives and analysts was that Korea’s role in in industrial collaboration, especially in strategic sectors, will be critical amid intensifying U.S.-China competition. In this context, AMCHAM’s initiative to help position Korea as regional headquarters of the Asia Pacific was well received by the U.S. Government officials.”

The 2024 Doorknock program underscored the crucial role of the U.S.-Korea alliance in maintaining regional stability and promoting economic growth. The delegation emphasized Korea’s importance in global supply chain resilience amidst rising strategic competition between the U.S. and China. Discussions also examined the necessity of policy stability to attract long-term investments and advocated for the importance of greater regulatory reforms to enhance Korea’s competitiveness as a business hub.

AMCHAM remains steadfast in its commitment to strengthening U.S.-Korea relations. The meetings provided an invaluable platform for AMCHAM to voice the priorities and concerns of its member companies, ensuring that both nations continue to collaborate towards a prosperous and secure future.

美 대선과 2025 APEC 개최 앞두고 한·미 양국 간 경제 협력 강화 전략 논의 위해 美 정부 고위급 인사들과 머리 맞대

2024년 9월 27일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김) 대표단이 2024년도 ‘워싱턴 도어녹’ 일정을 성공적으로 마무리했다. 대표단은 현지 시각으로 지난 9월 9일부터 12일까지 미국 워싱턴 D.C.를 방문해 12개 주(州)를 대표하는 14개 상·하원의원실을 비롯하여 백악관 국가경제위원회 (NEC)과 부통령실 등 10개의 미국 정부 기관과 만남을 가졌다.

LG에너지솔루션, 포스코, BAE 시스템즈, 코닝, 구글, 록히드마틴, 인튜이티브서지컬코리아, 삼일회계법인, UPS 등 역대 가장 다양한 산업 분야를 아우른 이번 대표단은 ‘도어녹’ 일정 동안 美 정부, 의회 주요 관계자 및 싱크탱크 등 고위급 인사 회의를 통해 그 어느 때보다 견고해진 한·미 경제 동반자 관계 지속·강화 방안을 논의했다.

방문 기간 동안 대표단은 다양한 이해관계자들과 만나 역내(域內) 평화와 안보, 전략적 경쟁, 공급망 회복력 및 대한민국을 아·태 지역 비즈니스 허브로 자리매김하기 위한 방안 등을 의논하였으며, 일정 중 앤디 김(D-NJ, 뉴저지주) 하원의원, 맷 머레이 미 국무부 APEC 대사, 제드 로열 미 국방부 인도-태평양 안보 담당 수석 차관보를 만나 관련 논의를 이어갔다.

아울러 대표단은 사흘 간 릭 라센(D-WA, 워싱턴주) 하원의원, 토드 영(R-IN, 인디애나주) 상원의원, 찰스 그래슬리(R-IA, 아이오와주) 상원의원, 아미 베라(D-CA, 캘리포니아주) 하원의원, 태미 더크워스(D-IL, 일리노이주) 상원의원 및 美 하원 세입위 무역 소위원회 위원들과의 심도 깊은 대화를 통해 경제·통상 관련 안건에 대한 목소리를 내고, 존 오소프(D-GA, 조지아주) 상원의원, 마르코 루비오(R-FL) 상원의원실, 이외에도 여러 의원실 실무진들과 만난 자리에서 한미FTA와 규제 조화의 필요성을 역설했다.

더불어 제프 스미스, 브렌트 새들러 연구원과 함께한 헤리티지재단 주최 조찬과 존 햄리 소장, 빅터 차 한국석좌 등이 자리한 미 전략국제연구센터(CSIS) 주최 조찬, 미 국가경제위원회(NEC), 부통령실, 산업안보국 등 고위 관계자들과의 미팅을 이어간 대표단은 오라클 타운하우스에서 열린 축하 리셉션으로 올 해 ‘도어녹’ 일정을 마무리했다.

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 “이번 ‘도어녹’은 美 대선을 불과 몇 주 앞둔 시점이어서 미국내 정치 지형을 둘러싼 보다 생동감 있는 현장 분위기를 직접 확인할 수 있었다. 더욱이 방문했을 때 두 번째 대선 토론회가 한창 진행 중이었다.”고 말하며, “이번 방문이 무엇보다 고무적이었던 것은 대선 결과와는 무관하게 한·미 관계가 여전히 중요하다는 데 대한 강력한 공감대를 확실히 확인할 수 있었다는 점이다. 우리가 만난 주요 정책 입안자들 모두 대한민국이 아시아 태평양 지역을 넘어 세계적으로 영향력을 확대하고 있다는 사실에 한치의 의심도 없었다.” 고 밝혔다.

그는 또한, “미국 정부 관계자들과 애널리스트들은 만장일치에 가깝게 미·중 경쟁이 심화되는 가운데 산업 협력, 특히 전략 분야에서 한국의 역할이 중요할 것이라고 말했다.”고 밝히며, “이러한 맥락에서 한국을 아시아 태평양 지역 본부로 자리매김하기 위한 암참의 이니셔티브는 올해도 미국 정부 당국자들로부터 큰 호응을 받았다.”고 덧붙였다.

올해 도어녹을 관통하는 핵심은 역내(域內) 안정성과 경제성장 촉진에 있어 한미동맹의 역할과 중요성을 재확인했다는 점이다. 방미 기간 동안 대표단은 미중 간 전략적 경쟁 심화 속 중요성이 커지고 있는 글로벌 공급망 회복력 측면에서의 한국의 역할을 강조하고, 장기적 투자 유치와 비즈니스 허브로서의 한국의 경쟁력 제고를 위해 정책 안정성과 규제 안정화의 중요성을 강조했다. 암참은 연례 ‘도어녹’ 프로그램을 통해 양국 경제의 번영과 안전한 미래를 위한 협력을 지원하여 오고 있으며, 앞으로도 한·미 정부 및 기업간 가교로서 양국의 보다 강력한 협력관계를 위한 노력을 이어 나갈 것이다.
