AMCHAM Explores Measures to Elevate Korea’s Leadership in Sustainability Across Asia Pacific

Representatives from government, academia and industry share insights on the impact of the evolving regulatory landscape on sustainability and best practices for how companies can navigate the resulting risks & opportunities​

September 26, 2024 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the Sustainability Seminar 2024 at the Four Seasons Hotel today.

Focusing on the topic “Driving ESG Excellence: Elevating Korea’s Leadership in Sustainability Across Asia Pacific” this year, the AMCHAM Sustainability Seminar featured representatives from government, academia and industry who shared their insights on the impact of the evolving regulatory landscape on sustainability, as well as best practices for how companies can navigate the resulting risks and opportunities.

As foreign direct investment (FDI) continues to rise and the government aims to position Korea as the premier hub for regional headquarters in Asia, the seminar sought to identify practical solutions to address the Environmental (E), Social (S), and Governance (G) challenges companies face.

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Korea’s rising prominence as a leading business hub in the Asia Pacific is inseparable from its progress in sustainability. According to the 2024 AMCHAM Business Survey, energy policy was identified as one of the most critical areas of reform to enhance Korea’s standing as a regional headquarters.” He added, “AMCHAM remains dedicated to facilitating these important discussions, fostering partnerships that will support sustainable growth and innovation in the region.”

In his video congratulatory speech, An Ho Young, Chair of the Environment & Labor Committee in the National Assembly, said, “This seminar delivers an important message that we must consider both the environment and the economy together. We will gather insights from today's discussions and further deliberate on related policies in the National Assembly, joining forces to realize the ESG vision.”

Kim Sang Hyup, Chairman of the 2050 Carbon Neutral Green Growth Committee, said in his video message, “At the summit meeting in Washington, DC in April last year, President Yoon Seok Yeol and President Joe Biden made very clear that climate change and clean energy are the priority areas of cooperation as global comprehensive strategic partners through the joint statement in commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the Korea-U.S. Alliance.”

He added, “Korea and the U.S. are perfect partners with firm commitments, expertise, and technologies to lead the global community towards carbon neutrality and green growth. Our collaboration will not only strengthen our alliance but also create immense opportunities for new jobs and sustainable growth.”

Will Cobb, Minister Counselor for Economic Affairs at the U.S. Embassy Seoul, also delivered congratulatory remarks emphasizing the critical importance of advancing U.S.-Korea cooperation on sustainability. Choi Won-Yong, Commissioner of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone, also shared remarks.

The event commenced with a keynote speech by Han Yi, Chairman of the Korea Accounting Standards Board, on Korea's path to securing leadership in sustainability in the Asia-Pacific region and discussed ESG. He elaborated further on this topic in a Fireside Chat with Professor Emeritus Choi June Sun from the Law School of Sungkyunkwan University.

The seminar also included presentations by Professor Tae-Hyoung Tommy Gim from the Graduate School of Environment Studies at Seoul National University, who discussed carbon neutrality through resource circulation; Representative Director Choe Seung-Ho of Pacifico Energy Korea, who discussed Korea’s potential as the green energy hub in the APAC region; Director Kim Dongsoo of the ESG Research Institute at Kim & Chang; and CEO Sean Park of EnergyX, who explored climate tech and the importance of innovation in sustainability. 

As a special session, Han Sang-Bong, Project Manager at the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone Authority, spoke on the sustainable zone of the Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone.                                         

The highlight of the seminar was a panel discussion led by Partner Hwang Seong Ik from Shin & Kim and Co-Chair of AMCHAM’s Energy & Environment Committee. Examining the topic “Developing Effective Sustainability Strategies: Insights from U.S. and Korean Corporations,” Lee Jiwon, Senior Researcher at the Environment Planning Institute at Seoul National University, Kim Hye Sung, Attorney at Kim & Chang, as well as CEO Sean Park from EnergyX shared their insights and best practices for both U.S. and Korean companies.

주한미국상공회의소, 한국이 아·태지역 내 지속가능성을 선도하기 위한 방안 모색 

- 2024 암참 지속가능성 세미나 개최 -  

민·관·학이 함께 진화하는 규제 환경이 지속가능성에 미치는 영향과 기업차원에서의 ESG 위험요소 및 기회에 대한 대응책 논의  

2024년 9월 26일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 포시즌스 서울 호텔에서 ‘2024 암참 지속가능성 세미나’를 개최했다.   

“ESG 선도국으로의 도약: 아태지역 내 한국의 지속가능성 리더쉽 강화” 라는 주제에 초점을 맞춘 암참의 이번 지속가능성 세미나에는 정부, 학계, 산업계 대표들이 참석하여 진화하는 규제 환경이 지속가능성에 미치는 영향과 기업들이 어떻게 각각의 위험과 기회에 대응해 나가야 할 것인지에 대한 인사이트 및 관련 모범 사례 등을 공유했다. 

해외직접투자(FDI)가 지속적으로 증가하고 아시아 지역 본부의 최고 허브로 자리매김하기 위한 정부 차원에의 지원도 지속적으로 논의되고 있는 가운데, 이번 세미나에서는 기업들이 직면한 환경(E), 사회(S), 거버넌스(G) 과제를 해결하기 위한 보다 실질적인 해결책 모색에 중점을 뒀다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 먼저 개회사를 통해 “아태지역의 선도적 비즈니스 허브로서 한국의 위상을 드높이는데 있어 지속가능성은 필수 불가결한 요소.”라고 밝히며, “올 초 실시한 암참의 ’국내 경영 환경 설문조사’ 에서도 에너지 정책이 한국의 지역 본부로서의 경쟁력을 제고하기 위한 중요한 개혁 분야 중 하나로 꼽혔다.” 그는 또한, “암참은 앞으로도 이러한 중요한 논의를 촉진하고 역내 지속 가능한 성장과 혁신을 지원할 파트너십을 육성하는 데 최선의 노력을 기울일 것.” 이라고 말하며 세미나의 시작을 알렸다.  

이어 국회 환경노동위원회 안호영 위원장은 영상 축사를 통해 “이번 세미나는 우리가 환경과 경제를 함께 생각해야 한다는 중요한 메시지를 전달한다. 논의를 통해 나온 고견을 모아 국회에서도 관련 정책을 논의하여 ESG 비전을 실현하기 위해 힘을 모을 것.” 이라고 밝혔다.   

김상협 2050 탄소중립녹색성장위원회 위원장은 또한 “지난 해 4월 윤석열 대통령과 바이든 대통령은 한미동맹 70주년 기념 정상 공동성명 발표를 통해 기후변화와 청정에너지가 글로벌 포괄적 전략동맹으로서의 최우선 협력 분야임을 명확히 하였다.”고 말하며, “굳은 책임감, 전문성, 첨단기술을 보유한 한·미 양국은 글로벌 공동체를 탄소중립과 녹색성장의 길로 이끌 최고의 파트너라는 측면에서 한국과 미국은 하나의 팀으로 협력을 통해 녹색성장이 경제적 비용이 아닌, 더욱 지속가능한 방식으로 새로운 일자리와 경제성장의 엄청난 기회가 된다는 점을 함께 입증해 나갈 것.” 이라고 영상 축사를 전했다.  

뒤이어, 주한미국대사관 윌 콥 경제부공사참사관도 축사를 전하며 지속가능성 측면에서 한미 협력의 중요성을 강조했다. 한편, 최원용 경기경제자유구역청장도 축사를 전했다.  

이날 세미나는 이한상 한국회계기준원 원장의 기조연설로 시작되었다. 이원장은 대한민국의 아·태지역 내 지속가능성 선도국 도약을 주제로 ESG 공시기준에 대한 발표를 이어갔으며, 최준선 성균관대학교 법학전문대학원 명예교수와의 좌담에서 더욱 자세한 논의를 이어갔다.  

이어진 발표 세션에서는 자원순환을 통한 탄소중립에 대해 논의한 김태형 서울대학교 환경대학원 교수를 첫 주자로, 최승호 퍼시피코 에너지 코리아 대표이사는 아·태지역 친환경 에너지 허브로서 한국의 잠재력에 대한 발표를 진행했다. 또한 김∙장 법률사무소 ESG경영연구소 김동수 소장과 기후기술 및 지속가능성 혁신의 중요성을 강조한 박성현 에너지X 대표이사의 발표가 뒤를 이었으며, 특별 세션 발표자로 나선 한상봉 경기경제자유구역청 프로젝트 매니저는 경기경제자유구역 지속가능 지구를 소개했다.  

이날 세미나의 하이라이트는 암참 환경&에너지 분과위원장을 맡고 있는 법무법인 세종 황성익 파트너 변호사가 좌장으로 진행한 패널 토론으로, 이지원 서울대학교 환경계획연구소 선임연구원, 김혜성 김∙장 법률사무소 변호사, 박성현 에너지X 대표이사가 패널로 참석하여, 효과적인 지속가능성 전략 개발을 위한 인사이트와 한·미 기업의 모범 사례를 공유하며 자유롭게 의견을 나누었다.
