AMCHAM Hosts First Meeting Following the Recent Launch of the “Bipartisan Forum for Advanced Diplomacy”

Key policymakers and industry leaders exchange insights on enhancing U.S.-ROK relations and improving regulatory environment

September 02, 2024 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted a meeting with its Government & International Affairs Committee today at the Conrad Hotel Seoul. Co-hosted by CODIT, this event was the first gathering following the recent launch of the “Bipartisan Forum for Advanced Diplomacy.” This meeting provided AMCHAM members with a unique opportunity to engage directly with key National Assembly members committed to strengthening U.S.-ROK relations.

The Bipartisan Forum for Advanced Diplomacy is a parliamentary research group formed by dedicated members of the National Assembly who have come together across parties to address the rapidly changing international landscape and resolve core issues related to the denuclearization, peace, and unification of the Korean Peninsula. The forum is led by Representative Wi Sung-lac of the Democratic Party.

This meeting offered a unique opportunity for policymakers and industry leaders to exchange perspectives and insights on U.S.-ROK relations ahead of the upcoming U.S. presidential election. It facilitated a dialogue on enhancing cooperation and highlighted the critical role of economic diplomacy. The discussions delivered invaluable insights into the policy directions and priorities of the National Assembly and the Korean government for the next four years, with a particular focus on the bilateral relationship between the two countries.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim expressed his gratitude, stating, “Thank you for choosing AMCHAM to host your inaugural event. Chairman Kim also highlighted AMCHAM’s collaborative efforts, saying, “At AMCHAM, we work closely with various Korean Government stakeholders to enhance Korea’s regulatory environment, striving to establish Korea as the leading business hub in the Asia Pacific region.”

The event featured a keynote presentation by Wi Sung-lac, Member of the National Assembly and former Korean Ambassador to Russia, who discussed “Korea-U.S. Relations: Future Directions and Actions.” This was followed by a panel discussion moderated by Chung Ji-eun, CEO of CODIT Corp and Co-chair of the AMCHAM Government & International Affairs Committee, featuring five National Assembly members Wi Sung-lac, Ahn Cheol-soo, Choi Hyung-du, Ihn Yohan, and Cha Jiho.

The discussions focused on Korea’s regulatory environment in areas such as AI, healthcare, carbon neutrality, and cybersecurity, offering crucial insights that will help position Korea as a premier location for regional headquarters.

This gathering underscored AMCHAM's commitment to fostering a mature and robust partnership between U.S. and Korea within the evolving legislative landscape. Through these interactions, AMCHAM aims to enhance collaboration and dialogue between the private sector and government representatives, paving the way for a stronger, more integrated U.S.- ROK alliance.

주한미국상공회의소, ‘선진외교를 위한 초당적 포럼’과  출범 이후 첫 공식 행사 개최 통해 한미동맹 강화 방안 모색

정계와 산업계가 함께 한미 관계 및 협력 방향에 대한 의견을 교환하고 규제 환경에 대한 미래 방향 논의 

‘선진외교를 위한 초당적 포럼'은 급변하는 국제 정세에 대처하면서 한반도 비핵화·평화·통일이라는 우리 고유의 핵심 어젠다를 해결하기 위해 정파를 떠나 뜻 있는 의원들이 초당적으로 모여 구성한 국회의원 연구단체로 외교부 한반도평화교섭본부장 겸 6자회담 수석대표와 러시아 대사를 역임한 더불어민주당 위성락 의원(외교통일위원회, 정보위원회)이 대표의원을 맡고 있다.  

이번 미팅은 美 대선을 앞두고 정계와 산업계가 한·미 관계에 대한 전망과 통찰을 나누고, 협력 방향에 대해 의견을 교환하며 경제외교의 중요성을 체감하는 자리가 되었다. 논의는 향후 4년간 국회와 한국 정부의 정책 방향과 우선 순위에 대한 귀중한 통찰을 제공했으며, 특히 한·미 양국 관계에 중점을 두었다.   

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 환영사를 통해 먼저, “포럼 출범 이후 첫 미팅 파트너가 된 것을 영광스럽게 생각한다.”고 말하며, “외교를 통한 대한민국의 글로벌 리더십 제고라는 포럼의 훌륭한 비전과 힘든 일정에도 불구 오늘 우리 암참 리더십들과의 소중한 시간을 할애해 주심에 깊이 감사드린다.”고 밝혔다.   

그는 또한, “암참은 대한민국이 아태지역의 선도적인 비즈니스 허브로 자리매김할 수 있도록 국내 규제 환경 개선을 위해 다양한 정부 이해관계자들과 긴밀히 협력하고 있다.”고 덧붙였다.    

이번 강연회에서 위성락 의원은 ‘미 대선과 한·미 관계-Future Directions and Actions’을 주제로 기조 강연에 나섰고, 이어진 패널토의에서는 코딧 정지은 대표가 좌장을 맡아 국민의 힘 안철수 의원, 최형두 의원, 인요한 의원, 더불어민주당 차지호 의원과 위성락 의원이 패널로 참석하여 심도 있는 논의를 펼쳤다.  

토론에서는 AI, 의료, 탄소중립, 사이버보안 등 분야에서 한국의 규제 환경이 집중적으로 다루어졌으며, 이는 한국을 아시아 지역본부로 자리매김하는데 중요한 통찰력을 제공했다.  암참은 이번 강연회를 통해 변화하는 입법 환경 속에서 더욱 성숙하고 견고한 한미동맹을 구축하고자 하는 강력한 의지를 보여주었으며, 앞으로도 이러한 활발한 상호 커뮤니케이션을 통해 민간 부문과 정부 간의 협력과 대화를 촉진하여, 보다 강력한 한미 동맹을 구축하는 데 기여해 나간다는 방침이다.
