AMCHAM Hosts a Special Luncheon with MOTIE Minister Ahn Dukgeun to Strengthen U.S.-Korea Economic Ties

Discussions focus on key policy directions to promote U.S.-Korea trade and investment relations,

 and ways to enhance Korea’s competitiveness as regional headquarters in the Asia Pacific

August 29, 2024 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted a special luncheon with Minister of Trade, Industry and Energy Ahn Dukgeun at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul today. The event centered on policy initiatives to promote U.S.-Korea trade and investment relations, as well as strategies to enhance Korea’s competitiveness as a regional headquarters in the Asia Pacific.

With over 100 global corporate representatives in attendance, including members of the AMCHAM Board of Governors, the event provided an in-depth look into the Korean government’s strategies to further strengthen the U.S.-ROK economic cooperation through closer partnership with AMCHAM.

In his welcoming remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Minister Ahn’s thoughtful and strategic vision for the ROK-U.S. economic collaboration has significantly contributed to the strong bilateral relationship we are seeing today. We are truly grateful for his leadership.”

He continued, “At AMCHAM, we continue to witness the strengthening of U.S.-ROK economic relations. In this context, we see a unique opportunity to position Korea as a regional headquarters in the Asia Pacific and MOTIE has been a key partner in advancing our RHQ initiative.”

In a keynote speech, Minister Ahn shared insights on the Korean government’s efforts to bolster economic collaboration between the United States and Korea. He elaborated on key policy priorities to enhance Korea’s attractiveness as a regional headquarters within the Asia Pacific and outlined strategic measures to strengthen bilateral trade ties.

Minister Ahn also expressed his sincere appreciation to the U.S. business leaders in attendance, saying, “I am deeply grateful for your commitment to creating quality jobs and revitalizing the local economy through your trust and investment in the Korean market. The United States is Korea's most important ally and economic partner. We look forward to even stronger economic cooperation between our two nations and encourage your continued investment and interest in Korea.”

During the Fireside Chat between AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, Minister Ahn discussed Korea’s leadership in strategic industries such as semiconductors secondary batteries and AI and highlighted the crucial role of U.S.-ROK cooperation in enhancing competitiveness. He addressed the impact of global geopolitical risks, including the U.S.-China trade conflict, on Korea's economy and export strategies.

In addition, Minister Ahn shared his views on the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS FTA) in relation to bolstering digital trade, outlined Korea’s carbon neutrality goals. He also emphasized the importance of specialized E4 visas for Korean professionals.

The event offered a rare opportunity for attendees to engage with Minister Ahn and gain a deeper understanding of the future direction of Korea’s trade and investment policies. AMCHAM remains dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment that supports the growth of U.S.-Korea economic relations and looks forward to further dialogue and initiatives that drive mutual prosperity.

주한미국상공회의소, 안덕근 산업통상자원부 장관 초청 특별 간담회 개최 통해 한·미 경제 협력 강화 방안 모색  

한·미 무역·투자 관계 증진을 위한 정부 주요 정책 방향과 아태지역본부로서 한국의 경쟁력 제고 방안 등 집중 논의

2024년 08월 29일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 안덕근 산업통상자원부 장관을 초청하여 특별 오찬 간담회를 개최했다.   

포시즌스 호텔 서울에서 진행된 이번 특별 오찬 간담회는 한·미 무역 및 투자 관계 증진을 위한 한국 정부의 주요 정책 이니셔티브와 아시아 태평양 지역 본부로서 대한민국의 경쟁력 강화 전략을 논의하기 위해 마련되었다. 암참 이사진을 포함한 100명 이상의 국·내외 기업 대표단이 참석한 가운데, 암참과의 긴밀한 파트너십을 통한 한·미 경제 협력 관계 강화 방안에 대해서도 심도 깊은 대화가 이어졌다.   

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 환영사를 통해, “한·미 경제 협력과 관련한 안덕근 장관님의 사려 깊고 전략적인 비전이 오늘날의 굳건한 양국 관계에 크게 기여하고 있다고 생각한다.”고 말하며, “그의 훌륭한 리더십에 진심으로 사의를 표한다.”고 밝혔다. 그는 이어 “우리는 현재 전례 없는 수준의 한·미 경제 관계를 목도하고 있다.”고 덧붙이며, “이러한 맥락에서 암참은 바로 지금이 대한민국이 명실공히 아태지역본부로 자리매김할 수 있는 절호의 기회라고 보고 산업통상자원부와 이러한 핵심 이니셔티브 달성을 위해 긴밀히 협력 중.” 이라고 말했다.  

이어진 기조연설을 통해 안덕근 장관은, 한·미 양국간 경제 협력 강화를 위해 한국 정부가 어떠한 노력을 기울이고 있는지에 대해 설명하며, 아·태지역 본부로서 한국의 매력을 극대화하기 위한 주요 정책 우선순위와 양국간 무역 관계를 강화하기 위한 전략적 조치 등에 대한 통찰을 공유했다.  

안덕근 장관은 간담회에 참석한 주한 미국기업인에게 “한국 시장에 대한 깊은 신뢰와 투자를 바탕으로 한국 내 양질의 일자리 창출과 지역경제 활성화에 동참해 준 것에 사의”를 표하고, “미국은 한국의 가장 중요한 동맹이자 경제 파트너인 바 앞으로도 한·미 경제 협력이 강화되길 바라며, 한국에 지속적인 투자와 관심을 당부” 한다고 발언하였다.  

안덕근 장관과 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 이어진 1대1 좌담을 통해, 반도체와 2차전지 AI 등 전략산업 분야에서 한국의 리더십에 대해 논의하며 경쟁력 강화를 위한 한·미 협력의 중요한 역할을 강조했다. 그는 또한 미·중 무역 갈등을 포함한 글로벌 지정학적 환경이 한국 경제와 산업·수출 전략에 미치는 영향에 대해서도 언급했다. 

안 장관은 또한, 디지털 무역 역량 강화라는 관점에서의 한미 자유무역협정(KORUS FTA)에 대한 고견과 탄소 중립 목표를 포함한 한국 정부의 에너지 관련 정책 등을 개괄했다. 그는 또한 한국인 전용 전문직 취업 비자인 E4비자의 필요성을 역설하기도 했다.  

이번 간담회를 통해 암참은 안덕근 장관과 암참 회원사간의 소중한 교류의 장을 마련함과 동시에 향후 한국의 통상·투자정책의 방향을 보다 깊이 이해할 수 있는 소중한 기회를 제공했다. 암참은 한·미 통상 관계 발전을 지원하기 위한 협력 환경 조성에 전념하고 있으며, 앞으로도 상호 번영을 견인하는 추가적인 논의와 이니셔티브를 위해 노력을 이어갈 방침이다.
