AMCHAM Forges Pathways for Stronger Global-SME Collaboration in the AIoT Ecosystem

Showcasing Qualcomm's successful collaboration cases with Korean SME and venture partners

and exploring opportunities for cross-border expansion between the U.S. and Korea

November 7, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the AMCHAM SME Collaboration Forum this morning at the Grand Hyatt Seoul.

The AMCHAM SME Collaboration Forum, held in collaboration with Qualcomm Technologies Inc. for the third time, aims to actively promote mutually beneficial partnerships between global companies and SMEs by showcasing successful collaboration cases involving Qualcomm and Korean SMEs. The event also seeks to enhance the competitiveness of local SMEs and explore opportunities for cross-border expansion between the two countries.

The forum featured several key officials from the U.S. and Korean governments, including H.E. Ahn Cheol-soo of the South Korean National Assembly, Andrew Gately, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs from the U.S. Embassy Seoul, and Minister Lee Young from the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, who pledged support through video remarks.

Under the theme “Expanding the SME Landscape into the Connected AIoT Ecosystem,” the event brought together representatives from AMCHAM member companies to explore strategies for strengthening alliances between international corporations and SMEs in the AIoT sector. Their discussions were geared toward fostering future collaborative prospects between the two nations.

In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim emphasized partnerships between global companies and Korean SMEs. “With a dedicated approach to our mission, AMCHAM is determined to facilitate enhanced business opportunities for SMEs in both the U.S. and Korea.” he said.

He added, “AMCHAM stands ready to support both governments in driving inclusive economic development and fostering innovation on a global scale. We will continue working closely with industry partners to create an environment conducive to doing business for both SMEs and MNCs.”

Senior Vice President and President of Asia-Pacific (APAC) at Qualcomm Technologies Inc., O.H. Kwon, delivered welcoming remarks about the various global opportunities in AI technology. “Amid growing interest in advanced AI technologies and its potential, such as generative AI, Qualcomm is committed to enabling on-device AI for smartphones, tablets, laptops, and other edge devices, gathering and processing data directly from the devices,” he said. “Qualcomm will continue to solidify the industry leadership by introducing innovative technologies and products including 5G, 6G, and on-device AI. We firmly believe that the driving force behind this growth and development lies in collaboration and cooperation.”

He added, “Qualcomm is forging and broadening the scope of the collaboration with Korea System Integrator (SI) customers to expand the Internet of Things (IoT) ecosystem and create business synergies while further strengthening collaborative relationships with existing SME partners.” He added, "We will continue to seek opportunities to collaborate with businesses in Korea and support them to go global. We look forward to the ‘AMCHAM SME Collaboration Forum’ channeling more opportunities for collaboration between foreign companies and domestic SMEs.”

H.E. Ahn Cheol-soo of the National Assembly expressed his endorsement for collaboration between SMEs and global companies in AI during his congratulatory remarks. “The AIoT sector's potential synergy arises from the combination of large corporations' economies of scale and the innovative ideas of various small and medium-sized enterprises. This collaboration between SMEs and large companies is a symbol of equity and innovation in our modern era, further enhancing the significance of today's forum,” he said.

He continued, “Built upon the strong foundation of the ROK-U.S. security alliance, I do hope that AMCHAM which has expanded the path of bilateral economic cooperation, will persistently contribute its effort to fostering partnerships in emerging industries between the two countries.”

In her video congratulatory remarks, H.E. Lee Young, Minister of SMEs and Startups, highlighted the international attention garnered by South Korean ventures and startups. “Korean startups and ventures have achieved global recognition, exemplified by 111 companies receiving innovation awards at CES 2023.”

She continued, “The Ministry of SMEs and Startups is actively supporting initiatives that foster collaboration between startups and global companies. When these innovative SMEs and startups partner with global companies possessing expertise in digital technology, business operations, and strong brand recognition, their potential to transform into global unicorns significantly grows.” Minister Lee also expressed openness to policy recommendations aimed at fostering business development in both countries, assuring that such suggestions would be thoroughly considered and integrated into the government's strategies. “Additionally, I hope AMCHAM Korea will act as a bridge, facilitating active collaborations between innovative Korean startups and ventures and exceptional U.S. global companies,” she added.

Andrew Gately, Minister Counselor for Commercial Affairs from the U.S. Embassy Seoul, said, “Today’s event, with its focus on highlighting the relationship of SMEs with multinational corporations, such as Qualcomm, establishes benchmarks for internationalization and turbo-charging the growth of SMEs.”

The event focused on Qualcomm’s key collaboration with Korean SMEs within the 5G AIoT ecosystem. Representatives from Qualcomm’s local SME partners presented on each company’s partnerships in this field, including President Andrew J. Park of Thundercomm Korea, who presented on the topic, “Charting the Future of Hybrid AI with Qualcomm & Thundercomm”; President Peter Lee of Zin Cooperation, who spoke on the theme, “Realization of DX Utilizing Aware Technology”; Senior Director Chris Lee,of Innodep, who explored the theme, “The Age of Intelligent Public Safety”; and Executive Director Bokkyeong Kim of InTown, who delved into the topic, “Why Private 5G for Enterprise?”

주한미국상공회의소, 글로벌-중소기업 간 협력을 통한 상생 AIoT 생태계 구축 방안 모색 

- 제3회 ‘2023 암참 중소기업 상생협력 포럼’ 성료 – 

퀄컴의 국내 중소벤처 협력사와의 모범 사례 발표 및 한·미 양국간 향후 협력 기회 증진 방안 모색  

2023년 11월 7일 – 주한미국상공회의소 (암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 오늘 오전 그랜드 하얏트 서울 호텔에서 ‘2023 암참 중소기업 상생협력 포럼(AMCHAM SME Collaboration Forum 2023)’을 개최했다.   

암참의 ‘중소기업 상생협력 포럼’은 퀄컴 코리아의 국내 중소벤처 협력사 파트너십 케이스 스터디를 통해 글로벌 기업과 중소기업(SME) 간 상생협력을 적극 독려하고 국내 중소기업의 경쟁력 강화 및 양국간 진출 기회를 모색하기 위해 마련된 행사로 올 해 3회째를 맞았다.   

올해 포럼에는 안철수 의원, 앤드류 게이틀리 주한미국대사관 상무공사가 참석하여 축사를 전해주었고, 이영 중소벤처기업부 장관은 영상 축사를 전했다. 이 외에도 한·미 정부 관계자 및 다수의 암참 회원이 참석한 가운데, ‘Expanding SME horizon toward connected AIoT Ecosystem' 을 주제로 글로벌 기업과 중소기업 간 AIoT 분야에서의 상생협력 사례를 공유하는 등 한·미 양국간 향후 협력 기회 증진 방안에 대해 논의하는 시간을 가졌다.  

암참 제임스 김 회장 겸 대표이사는 개회사를 통해 먼저 글로벌 기업과 한국 중소기업 간 파트너십의 중요성을 강조하였다. 또한 그는 “암참은 한·미 양국의 중소기업이 서로의 나라에서 더욱 활발한 비즈니스 활동을 할 수 있도록 지원하고 있다.” 라고 말했다. 그는 이어, “암참은 경제 발전을 선도하는 포용력 발휘 및 글로벌 차원의 혁신 촉진을 위해 양국 정부를 지원할 만반의 준비가 되어 있다.”고 강조하며, 중소기업(SMEs)과 글로벌 다국적 기업(MNCs) 모두에 보다 나은 환경 조성을 위하여 다양한 산업 파트너들과 밀접히 협력하여 나갈 것.” 이라고 덧붙였다.  

권오형 퀄컴 본사 수석 부사장 겸 아태지역 총괄 사장은 환영사를 통해 “생성형 AI 등 진보된 AI 기술과 그 가능성에 이목이 집중되는 가운데 퀄컴은 스마트폰, 태블릿, 노트북등 엣지 디바이스 자체에서 데이터를 수집, 처리하는 온디바이스 AI에 주력하고 있다. 퀄컴은 앞으로도 5G, 6G, 온디바이스 AI등 혁신적인 기술 및 제품들을 선보이면서 업계 선도적인 위치를 더욱 공고히 할 것이며, 이러한 성장과 발전의 원동력은 상생과 협력에 있음을 굳게 믿는다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 

그는 또한, “퀄컴은 기존 중소기업 파트너사들과의 협력 관계를 더욱 강화하는 한편 사물인터넷 생태계 확장을 위해 새롭게 협력관계를 다지게 된 국내 System Integrator (SI) 고객들과도 사업적 시너지를 창출해 나가고 있으며, 그 협력 범위를 더욱 넓혀가고 있다.”며 “한국에서 협력하고 있는 사업들이 글로벌 진출을 할 수 있는 방법들을 앞으로도 지속적으로 찾겠다. 이번 행사를 토대로 외국계 기업과 국내 중소 기업간의 협업을 다질 수 있는 기회가 더 많아지길 기대한다.”고 말했다.  

안철수 의원은 이어 “AIoT 분야는 대기업의 규모의 경제와 다양한 중소기업들의 아이디어가 결합해야 시너지를 낼 수 있다.” 라고 말하며, “또한, 중소기업과 대기업의 상생은 우리 시대 공정과 혁신의 지표라고도 할 수 있기에 오늘 포럼이 더욱 의미 있다.” 라고 덧붙였다. 그는 또한, “한·미 안보동맹을 기반으로 양국 경제협력의 길을 넓혀온 암참이 앞으로도 신산업 분야의 양국 파트너십을 위해 더욱 힘써 주기를 바란다.” 라고 말했다.  

중소벤처기업부 이영 장관은 영상 축사를 통해 먼저, “대한민국의 벤처·스타트업은 올해 개최된 CES2023에서 111개사가 혁신상을 수상하는 등 세계가 주목하고 있다.” 라고 말했다. 그는 이어, “중소벤처기업부는 글로벌 기업과 한국의 벤처·스타트업 기업이 협업할 수 있는 마련하고 적극 지원하고 있다.” 라고 말하며, “한국의 벤처·스타트업 기업도 기술력과 경영 노하우 브랜드 인지도를 보유한 글로벌 기업과 협업을 원하고 있으며, 이들은 글로벌 유니콘으로 성장을 꿈꾸고 있다.” 고 덧붙였다. 

그는 또한, “오늘 포럼을 통해 양국의 기업이 발전할 수 있도록 정책적 제안을 해주시면 적극 반영하겠다.”고 말하며, “더불어 대한민국의 혁신 벤처·스타트업이 미국의 우수한 글로벌기업과 활발히 교류하고 협력할 수 있도록 암참이 든든한 가교 역할을 해주시기를 기대한다.” 며 당부의 말을 전했다.  

앤드류 게이틀리 주한미국대사관 상무공사는 이어진 축사를 통해, “오늘 포럼을 통해 퀄컴과 같은 다국적 기업과 중소기업간의 협력의 중요성을 강조하고 이를 통해 국제화의 좋은 예를 보여줌과 동시에 중소기업의 성장을 가속화할 수 있기를 바란다.” 고 말했다.    

이날 포럼에서는 5G AIoT 생태계를 위한 국내 중소기업과 퀄컴의 협력이 주요 사례로 소개되었다. 썬더컴코리아 박종오 대표는 ‘퀄컴과 썬더컴이 함께 설계하는 하이브리드 AI의 미래’ 를 주제로; 진코퍼레이션 이창희 대표이사는 ‘퀄컴의 Aware 플랫폼 기반 디지털 혁신’ 을; 이노뎁 전략사업부 이근우 상무는 ‘퀄컴과의 지능형 스마트시티 구축 사업’ 에 대해; 김복경 인타운 전무는 ‘기업용 Private 5G의 필요성’ 에 대해 발표했다.
