Celebrating Seven Decades of Unwavering U.S.-Korea Friendship and Boosting Korea's Status as the Ideal Regional HQ Hub

-AMCHAM successfully concludes “Doorknock” program between October 24-26, 2023

-Doorknock program set to be expanded in 2024, catering to Korean companies investing in the U.S.

November 1, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) successfully concluded its AMCHAM Doorknock visit to Washington D.C. Spanning from October 24-26, the trip featured approximately 30 functions and meetings with U.S. administrative agencies, Congress and think tanks, to discuss the enduring U.S.-Korea economic partnership.

The delegation engaged in productive meetings with officials from various sections of the U.S. Government Administration, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the United States Trade Representative, and the White House. The itinerary also included meetings with 15 offices of Senators, including Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Todd Young (R-IN), Rick Scott (R-FL), Ami Bera (D-CA), Andy Kim (D-NJ), as well as Representative Ed Royce, Former Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, and more.

Through these meetings, the delegation was able to celebrate seven decades of the robust U.S.-Korea alliance, which was further highlighted during a luncheon hosted by South Korean Ambassador to the U.S., Cho Hyun-dong. The delegation’s counterparts agreed that the current bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Korea is the strongest that it has ever been, and there is a strong willingness from the U.S. government to further intensify collaboration through efforts like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for a more robust partnership.

The delegation also received substantial support from the U.S. government to continue AMCHAM's endeavors in promoting Korea as the premier destination for regional headquarters in Asia. This support was notably emphasized by Kurt Campbell, Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council.

This year's AMCHAM delegation has been enriched by the participation of prominent Korean firms such as Hyundai Motor, Kia, and POSCO, along with AWS, BAE Systems, EY, GE, Google, Kim & Chang, Lockheed Martin and Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers.

2023년 11월 1일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김) 대표단이 ‘워싱턴 도어녹’ 일정을 성공적으로 마무리하고 귀국길에 올랐다. 대표단은 현지 시각으로 지난 10월 24일부터 26일까지 미국 워싱턴 D.C.를 방문하여, 바이든 행정부, 美 의회 주요 관계자 및 싱크탱크 등 30여개 고위급 인사 회의를 통해 그 어느 때보다 견고해진 한·미 경제 동반자 관계 지속·강화 방안을 논의했다.  

대표단은 사흘 간에 걸친 일정을 통해 美 상무부, 국무부, 세관국경보호국(CBP), 무역대표부, 백악관을 비롯하여 행정부 각 부·처 주요 관계자들과 만나 유익한 대화를 이어나갔다. 일정의 백미는 국가안전보장회의(NSC) 인도-태평양 조정관을 맡고 있는 커트 캠벨과의 만남이었으며, 빌 해거티 (R-TN, 테네시주), 존 오소프 (D-GA, 조지아주), 태미 더크워스 (D-IL, 일리노이주), 테드 크루즈 (R-TX, 텍사스주), 토드 영 (R-IN, 인디애나주), 릭 스콧 (R-FL, 플로리다주) 상원의원을 포함하는 15개 상원의원실과 아미 베라 (D-CA, 캘리포니아주), 앤디 김 (D-NJ, 뉴저지주) 등 하원의원 및 에드 로이스 前 미국 연방 하원의회 외교위원회 위원장과의 만남도 일정에 포함되었다.  

이번 도어녹 일정 동안 대표단은 주요 미팅 등을 통해 지난 70년간 양국의 공동 업적을 기념하며 더욱 강력해진 동맹 관계를 실감했다는 전언이다. 이는 조현동 주미한국대사가 대표단을 대사관저로 초대해 주최한 오찬을 통해 더욱 부각되었다. 대표단을 만난 美 정부 관계자들은 한 목소리로 현재의 한·미 양국의 관계는 그 어느 때보다 견고하며, 보다 굳건한 동반자 관계를 위해 인도-태평양 경제프레임워크와 같은 노력을 통해 협력을 더욱 강화하고자 하는 미국 정부의 의지가 강하다는데 의견을 같이했다.  

한편, 한국의 아태지역 최고의 비즈니스 허브화를 지속적으로 강조해온 암참의 그간 노력은 美 정부 관계자로부터 큰 지지를 받았다. 특히 커트 캠벨 미국 국가안전보장회의(NSC) 인도태평양 조정관은 암참의 이러한 노력을 크게 지지하며 적극적 지원을 약속했다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 “한·미 양국 동맹관계의 특별하고 놀라운 70년을 기념하며, 양국의 동반자 관계가 해가 다르게 다양해지고 깊어지는 것을 목도하는 것은 실로 짜릿한 일.” 이라고 말하며, “올 해 도어녹 방문은 양국간 변함없는 신뢰와 협력을 보여주는 중요한 이벤트.” 라고 덧붙였다.  

그는 또한, “더욱이 한국을 아시아 제1의 비즈니스 허브로 만들겠다는 암참의 최우선 미션이자 공동 목표에 있어 美 정부로부터 전폭적인 지지를 받게 된 것은 더욱 고무적.” 이라고 밝히며, “이는 양국간 지속될 우정의 굳건함을 반영한 것이며, 향후 70년간 더욱 번영할 양국 경제협력의 토대를 더욱 공고히 할 것.” 이라고 강조했다.   

올 해 대표단에는 한미동맹 70주년을 맞아 AWS (아마존웹서비스), BAE 시스템즈, 한영 회계법인, GE, 구글, 김앤장 법률사무소, 록히드마틴, 삼일 회계법인을 비롯하여 현대자동차, 기아자동차, 포스코 등 국내 굴지의 주요 글로벌 기업들이 함께 참석해 그 의미를 더했다.   

한편, 암참은 2024년 특별히 한국 기업들을 대상으로 기존 워싱턴 방문 일정에 더해 한국 기업 투자가 활발한 미국 內 주(州, 추후 공개 예정)를 함께 방문하는 특별 도어녹 프로그램을 추진할 계획이다.
