AMCHAM Pledges to Actively Support Paju City’s “Leap Toward a Greater Paju Project”

​AMCHAM signs MOU with Paju City as a part of mission to position Korea as a business hub in Asia and support economic collaboration to attract more investment from American companies

October 20, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea; Chairman & CEO James Kim) visited Paju City this afternoon to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU).

The signing ceremony was attended by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, Paju City Mayor Kim Kyung-il, National Assemblyman for Paju City Park Jeong, Chairman of Paju Chamber of Commerce and Industry Park Jong-chan and CEO of Original Beer Company Park Seung-won. Original Beer Company is an AMCHAM member company located in Paju City.

This agreement serves as a testament to the robust partnership between the two organizations. It is strategically designed to facilitate investments from AMCHAM member companies, bolster the “Leap Toward a Greater Paju Project” and reinforce AMCHAM's unwavering commitment to fostering a fair business policy environment that harmonizes with Paju City's overarching vision.

The Leap Toward a Greater Paju Project is a visionary initiative designed to propel Paju City – a city of a million dreams and opportunities – into a new era of economic growth, focusing on peace economy zones, economic free trade areas, and the revitalization of industries, including culture and tourism.

In the broader context, this MOU marks yet another pivotal milestone in AMCHAM's primary mission to facilitate South Korea's emergence as number one business hub within the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, this partnership with Paju City represents a notable milestone as AMCHAM enters into its second regional agreement with a local government in South Korea, following the one established with Incheon City just last year.

This meeting was arranged to realize its greater mission through close collaboration between Paju City and AMCHAM, who plays a crucial role in maintaining a strong partnership with South Korea’s top ally and future-oriented cooperation partner, the United States. With the signing of the MOU and the special meeting, the two organizations will actively cooperate to support economic cooperation and investment attraction activities of Paju City and promote cooperation between U.S. companies and Korean companies in Paju.

James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, remarked, “With its well-established industrial complexes, robust infrastructure, and an array of investment opportunities, including peace economy zones and economic free trade areas, Paju City is actively striving to position itself as a global business hub, attracting a growing number of MNCs looking to expand their operations in South Korea.” He added, “AMCHAM will continue to play a major role in the future as a bridge between the U.S. and Korean governments and business communities. We will actively support the Paju City’s mission.

Paju City Mayor Kim Kyung-il said, “This agreement with AMCHAM and its globally esteemed member companies is poised to usher in an even brighter future for Paju City. Looking ahead, we aim to broaden the horizons for companies investing in Paju City through the close collaboration of both organizations, and Paju City is fully committed to offering unwavering support.”

Going forward, the two organizations will identify specific mutual cooperation measures, attract investment from American companies by strengthening the network with AMCHAM and its member companies, and support economic cooperation and investment attraction.

주한미국상공회의소, 파주시와 MOU 체결 통해 ‘더 큰 파주 도약 프로젝트’ 적극 지원 약속 

美 기업의 투자 유치 촉진 및 경제협력 지원 통해 한국의 아·태지역 제1의 비즈니스 허브 미션 실현 가속화

2023년 10월 20일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)가 19일 오후 파주시(시장 김경일)를 방문하여 양해각서(MOU)를 체결했다.  

이날 체결식에는 제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사를 비롯해 김경일 파주시장, 박정 의원, 박종찬 파주상공회의소 회장이 참석했으며, 파주시 소재 암참 회원사인 오리지널 비어 컴퍼니의 박승원 대표가 참석해 협약의 의미를 더했다.  

본 협정을 통해 양 기관은 이른바 ‘더 큰 파주 도약 프로젝트’의 성공적인 추진을 위한 상호 긴밀한 협력을 약속하며, 암참 회원사의 파주 투자 유치와 암참의 공정하고 자유로운 기업경영 및 정책 환경 조성을 위한 기반을 마련하였다.   

‘더 큰 파주 도약 프로젝트’는 평화경제특구, 경제자유구역 지정을 중심으로 기업유치·문화·관광을 비롯한 각종 산업 활성화 등 100만 도시 파주로 도약을 위한 신성장 프로젝트이다. 이번 MOU는 대한민국을 아·태지역 제1의 비즈니스 허브로 부상케 하고자 하는 암참의 미션 실현을 위한 또 하나의 초석이 될 것으로 보인다. 더욱이 파주시와의 MOU는 지난 해 인천시에 이어 암참이 한국 지방 정부와 체결한 두 번째 협정이라는 점에서 한층 특별한 의미가 있다.  

대한민국의 최우방 동맹국이자 미래 지향적 경제협력 파트너인 미국과의 굳건한 관계 유지에 중추적인 역할을 수행해 오고 있는 암참과 더 큰 파주를 향한 비전을 가진 파주시는 금번 MOU와 간담회를 계기로 향후 ▲파주시의 미국 기업 경제협력 및 투자유치 활동 지원, ▲한국시장 진출을 희망하는 미국기업과 파주 內 한국 기업들과의 협력 증진 등을 위해 적극 협력하여 나갈 예정이다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는, “파주시는 탄탄하게 조성된 산업단지와 인프라, 평화경제특구와 경제자유구역 등의 다양한 투자 기회를 가진 도시로서, 글로벌 기업들의 한국 內 사업 확장 유치 및 글로벌 비즈니스 허브로 자리매김하기 위한 노력을 다하고 있다” 라고 말하며, “암참은 앞으로도 한·미 양국 정부와 재계간 연결고리가 되어 핵심적인 역할을 이어 나감은 물론, 파주의 ‘더 큰 파주 도약 프로젝트’ 성공을 위해 다방면으로 적극 지원해 나가겠다.”고 말했다.  

김경일 파주시장은 “세계적인 기업이 함께하는 암참과 협약을 맺게 되어 파주시의 미래가 한층 더 밝아질 것으로 기대한다.”고 말하며, “앞으로 양 기관의 긴밀한 협력을 통해 파주시에 투자하는 기업의 활동 영역이 더욱 확대되기를 기원하며, 파주시에서도 지원을 아끼지 않겠다.” 고 덧붙였다. 향후 양 기관은 구체적인 상호 협력 방안을 마련하고, 암참 및 소속 회원사와의 네트워크 강화를 통한 미 기업의 투자유치 촉진, 경제협력 및 투자유치 지원을 도모해 나갈 예정이다.
