AMCHAM Signs Agreement on Commemorative Sculpture for Relocation of USFK

(한글은 아래 참조) ? July 3, 2018 (Seoul) ? On July 2, AMCHAM held a meeting with H.E. Song Young-moo, Minister of National Defense, and signed the “Agreement on the Construction of Commemorative Monument for the Relocation of U.S. Forces Korea to Pyeongtaek” with the Ministry of National Defense U.S. Forces Korea Base Relocation Office in honor of the strengthening of the Korea-U.S. alliance. Under the agreement, AMCHAM is set to launch the U.S.-ROK Alliance Support Committee, led by Myung Chan Lee, Country Chief Executive of Lockheed Martin Global, Inc., Korea. The committee will actively raise funds with domestic and foreign companies to contribute to the construction and installation of a sculpture commemorating USFK’s relocation to Pyeongtaek. The sculpture will be placed in front of the new USFK headquarters at Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek in the second half of 2018. Kim You Geun, Chief Director of Ministry of National Defense U.S. Forces Korea Base Relocation Office, said, “The symbolic sculpture installed on the U.S. military base in Pyeongtaek will be a monument to the memory of the U.S.-Korea alliance that has been strong for the past 60 years.” James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, said, “The fund will show appreciation from the U.S. business community for both U.S.-Korea defense agencies, who have contributed greatly to the protection of peace on the Korean Peninsula and the U.S.-Korea alliance.” On June 29, Chairman & CEO Kim and Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors Jeffrey Jones were invited to the opening ceremony of Camp Humphreys in Pyeongtaek. AMCHAM Committed to Promote Innovation in Korean Healthcare Industry

(한글은 아래 참조) ?June 24, 2018 (Seoul) - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea) hosted the ninth annual AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar on Friday, June 22, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. Around 200 representatives from the Korean and U.S. governments, industries and academia gathered to share their insight through presentations and panel discussions under the theme “Reliable and Innovative Healthcare Within Reach.” The seminar aims to facilitate an open and constructive dialogue on innovation in the healthcare industry. The seminar began with opening remarks from James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, followed by congratulatory remarks by H.E. Kim Ganglip, Deputy Minister of Health and Welfare and welcoming remarks by David Gossack, Minister-Counselor for Commercial Affairs at the U.S. Embassy. In his remarks, Deputy Minister Kim highlighted the Moon Administration’s efforts to improve the healthcare system in Korea. “The Moon Administration is trying to achieve better healthcare coverage which would bring benefits to the Korean people and it can also provide opportunities for AMCHAM member companies,” he explained. "This seminar will reveal many constructive ideas and the Ministry is willing to listen and use them as a reference to improve our policies going forward.” Minister-Counselor Gossack elaborated on the reciprocal and future-driven beneficial impact of the U.S. - Korea partnership on the Korean healthcare system. “American companies here today have made great contributions to the quality of care for Korean patients. They are appreciative of the opportunity to join in the effort to build a great healthcare system in Korea,” he remarked. “American companies continue to lead the world in R&D in the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors, and their contributions will continue on in the future.” H.E. Yong-Ik Kim, President of the National Health Insurance Service (NHIS), delivered the plenary keynote presentation on “Moon Care and Medical Devices & Pharmaceutical Industries.” “Moon Care is meant to address the weaknesses of the insurance system,” he remarked. “By improving and extending coverage, we want to create a society where people don’t have to worry about medical costs and can get the treatment they need. It also aims to mitigate the distrust between doctors and patients by expanding reimbursables.” He concluded the speech by encouraging partnerships between the government and stakeholders in the pharmaceutical and medical devices industries. In the following fireside chat, Dong-Wook (Dave) Oh, Country Manager & Internal Medicine Lead of Pfizer Korea, asked a question about how the domestic pharmaceutical and medical devices industries could contribute to the government’s efforts. CEOs Serve Tables for AMCHAM Charity Night

The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted the 14th AMCHAM CEO Servers’ Night at the Conrad Seoul on Tuesday, June 12, 2018. 16 CEOs of AMCHAM member companies received dinner service training by hotel staff and spent the evening serving food and wine to their coworkers, business partners and friends. Hosted annually by AMCHAM’s charitable arm, Partners for the Future Foundation (PFF), since 2003, CEO Servers’ Night raises scholarship funds for university students from families experiencing financial difficulties. The event began with opening remarks by James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM. In his remarks, Chairman & CEO Kim said, “This year’s event is particularly special, as it is our biggest CEO Servers’ Night in AMCHAM history, with a total of 16 CEOs participating and around 230 guests in total. This meaningful event has been successful for several years and I am proud to say that we have helped to establish a unique and powerful fundraising custom in Korea. This is the second annual AMCHAM seminar specializing in the shipping industry, with the theme "Digitalization and Future of the Shipping Industry.” To keep up with the market’s complexity, pace and growing competition, the ocean carrier industry is in the process of updating old-fashioned ways of handling shipping processes. AMCHAM Pursues Fair and Balanced Trade between U.S. and Korea

(한글은 아래 참조) May 15, 2018 ? The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) hosted a Press Conference on Doorknock on May 15, 2018, at the AMCHAM office. AMCHAM leadership, represented by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, Chairman of AMCHAM Board of Governors Jeffrey Jones, and Former Chairman of AMCHAM David Ruch elaborated the specifics of what AMCHAM delegation proposed and discussed during their Doorknock visit to Washington D.C. last month. Chairman & CEO Kim began the conference by highlighting several factors that have led to stronger U.S. ? Korea relations. “The U.S.-Korea commercial relationship has seen much progress and development over the past year. AMCHAM’s efforts with the U.S. and Korean business communities and governments have led to a dramatic narrowing of the bilateral trade deficit.” Following Chairman Kim’s remarks, Chairman Jones delivered in-depth remarks about the three key messages that were delivered during the meetings at Washington D.C. He detailed 1) the reduction of the U.S. ? Korea bilateral trade deficit, 2) the business community’s appreciation for the agreement in principle on the KORUS FTA amendment, and 3) the implementation issues that remain. “Now that the agreement in principle on the KORUS FTA amendment has been announced, ensuring full and faithful implementation is top priority,” he remarked. “AMCHAM shared many of the trade barriers, market access issues and Korea-unique standards that AMCHAM member companies face with not only the Administration but also with the members of the Congress.” Finally, Former Chairman David Ruch elaborated on AMCHAM’s past contributions to achieve balanced trade and initiatives to continue these efforts. He delved into four meaningful opportunities for the U.S. and Korea to achieve a better trading balance on a win-win basis: 1. Defense: By increasing share of U.S. military hardware, Korea would be able to enhance combined force operability while increasing U.S. exports by $8.7 billion USD. 2. Energy: If Korea would increase U.S. energy imports to a 10% share of the country’s total energy spend, U.S. exports would increase by $9 billion USD per year. 3. Healthcare: If Korea would adjust their reimbursement mechanism to reach even 50% of the OECD average, it would generate a $3 billion USD in drug exports to Korea and provide its people with innovative medicines 4. Travel & Tourism: Enrolling just 10% of Korea’s eligible passport holders, or 700,000 people, could generate an additional 500,000 Korean visitors to the U.S. each year. This win-win solution provides Korean citizens with preferred entry into the U.S. and the U.S. would enjoy increased tourism exports. Around 20 members of press from both domestic and foreign media outlets were present at the press conference.
