AMCHAM Presents a Shift to Digital Healthcare for Sustainability AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar 2021 December 17, 2021 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the 12th AMCHAM Healthcare Innovation Seminar on Friday, December 17, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. At the event, which was held in a hybrid online-offline format, representatives from key stakeholders from the Korean and the U.S. governments, academia, and industries to discuss the theme of “Seizing Korea’s Opportunity in the New Age of Global Healthcare Innovation.” The event began with opening remarks by James Kim, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO. “It has been challenging year, but thanks to all the efforts from frontline workers, researchers, as well as timely actions from government leaders in Korea, we are at a critical point where we should facilitate open and constructive dialogue on the transformation in the healthcare industry.” he said. He added, “I hope today’s session will be a meaningful opportunity to create a more flexible regulatory environment for healthcare innovation and further explore development.” H.E. Kim Sung Joo, Vice Chair of the Health and Welfare Committee at the National Assembly delivered his congratulatory remarks through video. “Investment and cooperation in research and development of the healthcare industry in response to the prolonged COVID-19 and the emergence of new infectious diseases are essential,” he said. “The National Assembly strives to come up with policy support measures for research and development in the healthcare sector and will continue to actively seek ways to improve the difficulties of domestic and foreign healthcare companies.” H.E Yang Seong-il, 1st Vice Minister of Health and Welfare, said, “The healthcare industry, which includes pharmaceuticals and medical devices, is Korea's growth engine with an average annual growth rate of 9% over the past five years.” He added, “In particular, proactive regulatory innovation will be promoted in areas with high growth potential, such as biohealth, and the government will continue to consider improving related systems to systematically foster and support relevant industries in the future.” The Hon. Christopher Del Corso, Chargé d’Affaires ad interim at the U.S. Embassy in Seoul, said, “Korea and the United States have been, and will continue to be, pioneers in innovation. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the area of healthcare.” Soonman Kwon, President of the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, Don Hyun, General Manager of Baxter Korea, and Dong-Wook Oh, Chairman of the Korea Research-based Pharmaceutical Industry Association, joined a panel discussion on the topic of “Creating a Post-COVID Healthcare System that Supports Patient Access and Innovation.” In the following special presentation session, Chang Jin Hong, Director of the Investment Division at Jeju Special Self-Governing Provincial Government, presented on new growth industries such as Jeju’s investment environment and support system, and Jeju’s bio industry. Fernandez- to discuss the state of the global business community in Korea and explore areas for collaboration - December 16, 2021 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) met with Under Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Jose W. Fernandez on December 16, 2021, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. The AMCHAM delegation included AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim and representatives from PwC, 3M, P&G, and Applied Materials. The meeting explored the evolving business environment in Korea and how Korea is addressing key topics discussed at the President Moon-Biden Summit earlier this year. They outlined some areas in need of improvement that can become potential areas for partnership and collaboration, especially in digital economy and clean energy. They also discussed existing regulatory challenges that American companies in Korea are facing, such as higher taxes, labor inflexibility and high cost of compliance in comparison to neighboring countries. Under Secretary Jose W. Fernandez highlights, “There are more than 1,200 US companies operating or exporting to the ROK, including large U.S. enterprises, thanks to our free trade agreement.” He continued, “We will not succeed in advancing our shared interests without elevating international science and technology cooperation. A critical component of how we do this is people-to-people exchanges, building and maintaining a strong network between governments, companies, civil societies, and universities.” AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “Since the Biden-Moon summit this past May, we’ve been witnessing the U.S.-Korea alliance growing closer than ever before, with the two countries holding ongoing strategic dialogues on global issues such as supply chain resilience and public health.” He added, “Despite the pandemic, U.S. companies and their contribution to the Korean economy have grown significantly over the recent years. The AMCHAM Board of Governors now includes 41 total members, including seven women and several regional managers. This is the largest and most diverse group in the organization’s history. AMCHAM and the Foreign Investment Ombudsman Successfully Host a Policy Seminar on Technical Trade Barriers to Digital Trade An examination of the impact of regulations such as cloud security certification on digital trade agreements December 6, 2021 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) and the Foreign Invest Ombudsman co-hosted a policy seminar this afternoon at Korea Trade and Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) headquarters on "Korea’s Entry into Global Digital Trade Agreement Scheme and Elimination of its Technical Barriers to Trade." This seminar was designed to discuss solutions and alternatives regarding regulations that may hinder Korea's successful incorporation into the global digital trade agreement system. Through the seminar, the Korean government analyzed the existing global digital trade agreement system, which is pushing to join the digital industry to advance overseas and strengthen its competitiveness and examined Korea's technology regulations that could act as an obstacle to negotiations in the subscription process. James Kim, Chairman & CEO of AMCHAM, said, "The pandemic has brought about a dramatic digital transformation that will change the global economic landscape. Digital technology is the core of future innovation. In this regard, I am very proud that U.S. companies such as AWS, Google, and Microsoft are pioneering high-tech technologies.” He added, “I hope today's seminar will be a forum to create an inclusive, fair, and sustainable digital trade policy regulatory environment.” Kim Sung-Jin, Foreign Investment Ombudsman, also said in a welcoming speech, "I hope today's seminar will be a platform to candidly discuss the tasks necessary for agreement on fragmented digital trade by country and discuss joint development." Kim Tae-Yoon, a professor at Hanyang University's College of Policy Science said that recent development of digital technology in the context of the emergence of digital trade agreements in the U.S., Singapore, Australia, and Japan, would create changes in the global trade environment in which new areas that cannot be regulated through existing WTO norms or individual free trade agreements will arise and tensions between countries will inevitably form on issues such as digital services, data, platform companies, and taxation. The following panel discussion was hosted by Professor Lee Han-Young of School of Economics at Chung-Ang University, and featured several digital policy and technology experts, including Kim Seung-Min Chief of Research, Korea Information Society Development Institute, Professor Kwak Dong-Chul of School of Economices and Trade at Kyungpook National University, Noh Kyoung-Won, Attorney at Kim & Chang, and Lee Moo-Sung, President of MLsoft. AMCHAM & FKI Leads U.S. and Korean Companies in Dialogue with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Katherine Tai - AMCHAM & FKI Co-hosts a Special Reception with USTR Ambassador Katherine Tai in partnership with the U.S. Embassy in Seoul - November 20, 2021 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM) and The Federation of Korean Industries (FKI) co-hosted a special reception with United States Trade Representative (USTR) Ambassador Katherine Tai on November 20, 2021, at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul. This special reception was designed to explore win-win opportunities for potential industrial cooperation between the U.S. and Korea, while strengthening the relationship. Ambassador Tai’s visit to Korea is part of her first trip to Asia as U.S. Trade Representative. With U.S. and Korean business leaders in attendance, Ambassador Tai emphasized the United States’ commitment to enhancing the bilateral relationship and highlighted the Biden-Harris Administration’s vision for developing an Economic Framework for the Indo-Pacific. The delegation also exchanged views on the U.S.-Korea economic partnership and how to strengthen cooperation in a global and regional context.
