AMCHAM Seeks Ways to Achieving ESG Goals in Business and Policy towards a Sustainable Future

 Exploring the latest global trends, best practices and ESG management strategies

May 31, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the AMCHAM ESG Seminar 2023 at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul today exploring the theme, “Sustainability and Social Responsibility: Practical Strategies for Achieving ESG Goals in Business and Policy.”

This seminar was organized to provide a platform for attendees to discuss the latest trends, best practices, and case studies regarding ESG. This seminar also aims to offer practical strategies for achieving ESG goals, including but not limited to environmental sustainability, social impact, and corporate governance. Representatives from the Korean and U.S. governments, industries joined the seminar to share their insight.

AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “In light of AMCHAM’s mission to make Korea regional headquarters in Asia Pacific, AMCHAM recognizes the immense potential of ESG in driving innovation and value creation for Korea.” He added, “AMCHAM’s Business Survey this year revealed opportunities for improvement in various ESG aspects, including the need for consistent environmental standards, clear ESG guidelines, greater awareness of diversity and inclusion, and reduced barriers to renewable energy sourcing.” He continued, “Through today’s program, I am confident that we will be able to raise awareness about best practices and industry solutions and optimize opportunities in the Environment, Social, and Corporate Governance space.”

Vice Minister Yoo Je-chul at the Ministry of Environment said, “The Ministry of Environment continues to support companies in enhancing their ESG competitiveness. We are proactively promoting companies' ESG practices by offering ESG consulting services in response to supply chain due diligence as well as subsidies to promote companies' green investment.”

Joy M. Sakurai, Deputy Chief of Mission at the U.S. Embassy Seoul, said, “The United States and Korea are working toward reducing carbon emissions, protecting and enhancing natural carbon sinks and expanding collaboration on technology and innovation for a greener world.” She added, “I am proud to see U.S. companies leading the way in modeling diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. As we implement our leaders’ shared vision with an eye toward the Alliance’s next 70 years, we look to AMCHAM and all of its member companies here to give us ideas on how the United States and Korea can deepen collaboration on our shared global challenges.”

Gyeonggi Free Economic Zone (GGFEZ) Authority kicked off the presentations by speaking about the Future of GGFEZ's ESG Policy.

Featuring prominent speakers such as County Managing Director of Yun Chung of UL Solutions, Senior Public Policy Manager Jae Han Yoo of GR Korea, the Seminar explored the topics such as the perspective of ESG trends in terms of risks and opportunities for Korean industries and ESG policy trends and importance of Government relations.

Other speakers, including JooWon Hwang, Sustainable Impact Country Manager of HP Korea, presented on the theme of “Going Beyond Together: ESG Strategy to Strengthen our Planet and Business Resilience.” Sachin Satpute, President of Novelis Asia, also spoke about “Novelis Sustainability Leadership.”

The event also featured a panel discussion exploring the topic, “Sustainability and Social Responsibility” Executive-Korea Susan Ji from Baker Huges, led an active dialogue featuring the seminar’s speakers and CheeYoung Lee, CEO of P&G Korea.

‘2023 ESG 세미나 개최’ 

ESG 최신 글로벌 동향, 모범 사례 및 ESG 경영 전략 등 자유로운 의견 교환의 장 마련  

2023년 05월 31일 – 주한미국상공회의소(암참; 회장 겸 대표이사 제임스 김)는 금일 오전 포시즌스 호텔 서울에서 '지속가능성과 사회적 책임: 비즈니스와 정책 ESG 목표를 달성하기 위한 실질적 전략'을 부제로 '2023 ESG 세미나'를 개최했다.  

한·미 정부, 산업계 및 글로벌 기업 관계자 다수가 참석한 가운데 암참은 ESG 최신 글로벌 동향, 모범 사례 등 자유로운 의견을 교환할 수 있는 장을 마련함으로써 지속가능한 환경, 사회적 책임 및 기업 지배구조 개선 등의 ESG 목표 달성을 위한 실용적인 전략을 모색하기 위해 이번 ESG 세미나를 마련하였다.  

제임스 김 암참 회장 겸 대표이사는 먼저 개회사를 통해 “대한민국을 아·태지역 內 가장 매력적인 투자처로 만들고자 하는 암참의 주요 미션을 이루기 위해, 암참은 대한민국의 가치를 높이고 혁신을 주도하는 데에 있어 ESG역할의 중요성을 인지하고 있다.”며, “또한, 올 초 회원사들을 상대로 시행한 암참 비즈니스 설문조사에서도 일관성 있는 환경 정책, 명확한 ESG 가이드라인, 다양성 및 포용성에 대한 인식 제고, 재생에너지 관련 규제 완화 등의 측면에 개선이 필요하다는 의견이 제기된 바 있다.”고 포문을 열었다. 그는 이어 “오늘 세미나를 통해 글로벌 기업들의 모범 사례와 업계 솔루션을 공유함으로써 ESG에 대한 인식을 높이는 한편, 지속 가능한 환경, 사회적 책임 및 기업 지배구조 개선이라는 목표를 향한 지름길을 함께 찾아갈 수 있는 기회가 될 것으로 확신한다.”고 덧붙였다.  

환경부 유제철 차관은, “환경부는 기업의 ESG 경쟁력 강화를 지원하고 있다.”고 말하며, “공급망 실사 등에 대응한 ESG 컨설팅, 기업들의 녹색투자 촉진을 위한 비용지원 등으로 기업의 ESG 실천을 선제적으로 촉진하고 있다” 라고 덧붙였다.  

또한, 조이 M. 사쿠라이 주한미국대사관 공관 차석도 축사를 통해, “한·미 양국은 탄소 배출량 감소, 천연의 탄소흡수원 보호 및 확대, 보다 친환경적인 세상을 만들기 위한 기술과 혁신 등의 부문에서 상호 협력을 통한 노력을 기울이고 있다.”고 말했다. 그는 또한, “다양성, 형평성, 포용성 및 접근성을 실천하는 데 있어 미국 기업들이 앞장서는 것을 보게 되어 자랑스럽다”고 말하며, “한미동맹의 다음 70년을 생각하며, 글로벌 위기를 함께 헤쳐 나가는 데에 있어 한·미 양국이 어떻게 협력해야 하는지에 대한 아이디어를 암참과 그 회원사들이 활발히 제공해 줄 수 있기를 기대한다.” 고 덧붙였다.  

한편 이날 세미나는 경기경제자유구역청의 ‘지속가능 지구’ 소개를 필두로 발표세션을 시작하여, UL Solutions 정륜 한국 총괄 대표, 지알코리아㈜ 유재한 수석 매니저가 각각 ‘ESG 트렌드: 한국 산업의 리스크와 기회’, ‘ESG 관련 주요 정책 트렌드와 Government Relations의 중요성’을 주제로 발표를 이었다.  

HP Korea 황주원 지속가능성 매니저는 또한, ‘비즈니스 성장과 지속가능한 미래를 위한 Tech 기업의 ESG 전략’을 주제로, 노벨리스 사친 사푸테 아시아 사장은 ‘노벨리스 지속가능 리더십’에 대해 이야기를 들려주었다.  

이날 세미나 말미에는 ‘지속가능성과 사회적 책임’을 주제로 패널 토론이 이어졌다. 암참의 에너지 & 환경 분과위원회 의장을 맡고 있는 베이커 휴즈 지예영 대표이사가 좌장으로 참석하여 앞선 연사자들과 한국 피앤지 이지영 대표와 함께 활발하고 건설적인 대화를 이끌었다.​
