AMCHAM Completes “Doorknock” Visit to Washington D.C.Celebrating Seven Decades of Unwavering U.S.-Korea Friendship and Boosting Korea's Status as the Ideal Regional HQ Hub -AMCHAM successfully concludes “Doorknock” program between October 24-26, 2023 -Doorknock program set to be expanded in 2024, catering to Korean companies investing in the U.S. November 1, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) successfully concluded its AMCHAM Doorknock visit to Washington D.C. Spanning from October 24-26, the trip featured approximately 30 functions and meetings with U.S. administrative agencies, Congress and think tanks, to discuss the enduring U.S.-Korea economic partnership. The delegation engaged in productive meetings with officials from various sections of the U.S. Government Administration, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the United States Trade Representative, and the White House. The itinerary also included meetings with 15 offices of Senators, including Bill Hagerty (R-TN), Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Todd Young (R-IN), Rick Scott (R-FL), Ami Bera (D-CA), Andy Kim (D-NJ), as well as Representative Ed Royce, Former Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives, and more. Through these meetings, the delegation was able to celebrate seven decades of the robust U.S.-Korea alliance, which was further highlighted during a luncheon hosted by South Korean Ambassador to the U.S., Cho Hyun-dong. The delegation’s counterparts agreed that the current bilateral relationship between the U.S. and Korea is the strongest that it has ever been, and there is a strong willingness from the U.S. government to further intensify collaboration through efforts like the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for a more robust partnership. The delegation also received substantial support from the U.S. government to continue AMCHAM's endeavors in promoting Korea as the premier destination for regional headquarters in Asia. This support was notably emphasized by Kurt Campbell, Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council. AMCHAM empowers win-win collaboration between global companies and SMEs for sustainable growth AMCHAM SME Collaboration & Innovation Summit 2023 September 7, 2023 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) the very first AMCHAM SME Collaboration & Innovation Summit today at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Featuring speakers from industry and academia, this event examined the power of collaboration under the theme, “Mutually Sustainable Growth through MNC and SME Partnerships.” The summit kicks off with Congratulatory Remarks from H.E. Lee Jae-jung, Chairperson of the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee at the National Assembly. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim highlighted the clear benefits of partnerships between global companies and SMEs. “Both MNCs and SMEs each offer their distinct and crucial strengths to these alliances, resulting in heightened innovation and superior concepts.” He continued, “AMCHAM is determined to facilitate enhanced business opportunities for SMEs in both the U.S. and Korea. AMCHAM’s ABC and KBC programs are great examples of AMCHAM’s important role in this endeavor. He added, “AMCHAM stands ready to support both governments in driving inclusive economic development and fostering innovation on a global scale. We will continue working closely with industry partners to create an environment conducive to doing business for both SMEs and MNCs.” Deputy Chief of Mission Joy Sakurai from the U.S. Embassy Seoul pledged the U.S. government’s support for collaboration between U.S. and Korean MNCs and SMEs to nurture sustainable innovation and growth. In addition, expert speakers from various global companies shared strategies and best practices that drive economic development and foster innovation on a global scale. Professor Emeritus Chae-Un Lim Sogang University’s School of Business and Chair of the SME Policy Forum at the Korea Academy of SME and Start-up Policy Initiative (KASPI) delivered a keynote speech on the theme, “Strategic Collaboration between Global Companies and Local SMEs: a Relation-Oriented Win-Win.” In his keynote speech, Professor Kim said, “Due to deteriorating external conditions and sluggish domestic demand, it is a challenge for Korean SMEs to create growth engines. If global companies with international marketing capabilities and distribution networks collaborate in a way that opens opportunities for Korean SMEs with excellent technology to expand overseas, a win-win situation, or a ‘Positive Sum,’ is possible.” As an example, he cited Amway Korea, which operates programs such as “One for One” and “Global Open Innovation” to identify SMEs with outstanding potential and provide support in all areas from new product development to overseas sales. AMCHAM Explores the Role of Generative AI in the Acceleration of Digital Transformation - AMCHAM Digital Innovation Forum 2023 - To encourage stakeholders to exchange ideas, build policy consensus, and explore cooperative strategies for partnerships among public and private sectors and academia May 15, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) hosted the AMCHAM Digital Innovation Forum 2023 at the Grand InterContinental Parnas this afternoon. Held for the second time this year, the Forum explored the theme, “The Industry Application and Popularization of Generative AI” in response to the recent booming interest in ChatGPT. The AMCHAM Digital Innovation Forum was designed to examine the concerns and challenges faced by foreign companies seeking to promote investment and digital growth in Korea. The event also aims to encourage stakeholders to reflect on key issues and exchange ideas on future prospects, and ultimately build policy consensus to help form strategies for partnerships among public and private sectors and academia. Amid the growing importance of the digital transformation, this year’s Forum highlighted the impact of generative AI (artificial intelligence) technology, exemplified by ChatGPT, on different business sectors and the innovative technology of the IT industry promoting the growth of the digital economy. In his opening remarks, Chairman Jeffrey Jones of the Partners for the Future Foundation said, “AI is one of the core technologies that is driving forward digital transformation and helping businesses scale up these days. I am confident that today’s event will be a great opportunity for all of us to explore the rapidly evolving landscape and technical capabilities of Generative AI.” Vice Chairperson Park Sung-Joong of the Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee in the National Assembly, delivered congratulatory remarks. “The government, companies, and foreign organizations in Korea in Korea must work together to actively promote AI human resources development and R&D. Cooperation with global IT companies is crucial,” he said. “As the Vice Chairperson of the National Assembly’s Committee on Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications, I will do my best to support the digital transformation of Korea.” Andrew Herrup, Minister-Counselor from the U.S. Embassy Seoul, also pledged the U.S. government’s enthusiasm for collaborating with Korea in digital through his congratulatory remarks. He said, “I am pleased to say our leaders get the importance of the digital economy. They understand that we - the United States and Korea - the public sector and the private sector - need to collaborate to secure and develop the digital technologies that will not only underpin our future economic growth and prosperity, but also improve the quality of life for people around the world.” The Forum began with a special session on AI Convergence Industry Team Director Oh Kyung-Hwa and Commissioner Kim Jin-cheol of the Gwangju Free Economic Zone Authority. The Gwangju Free Economic Zone Authority attracted the attention of participating companies and officials by promoting Gwangju's attractive investment environment such as AI convergence, future mobility, and smart energy. Kicking off the industry presentations, Chris Howard, AI/ML Solutions Architect Leader at AWS Asia Pacific & Japan, shared best practices on how to responsibility implement AI/ML services in a presentation under the theme, “Transform your Business with Generative AI.” He said, Jieun Lee, Chief Technology Officer at IBM Korea, introduced the IBM AI Platform WatsonX in a presentation on the theme, “AI for Business to Accelerate Digital Transformation.” “With the development of foundation models, AI for business is more powerful than ever. WatsonX specializes in providing customizable capabilities for enterprises looking to transition to AI,” she said. “With WatsonX, companies will be able to take control of their data and deploy custom AI capabilities for their entire businesses.” In a presentation on the theme, “Promote, Regulate, or Both? Finding the Right Balance for Generative AI?”, Brian Chung, Foreign Attorney at Kim & Chang, emphasized the need to find a balance between AI technology innovation and regulation. Clint Yoo, Co-Founder & Head of Business at Business Canvas, known as Typed, and Rob Lyu, CEO & Founder of Atlas Labs, delivered presentations on the current state of digital innovation, under the context of Generative AI, SaaS and Cloud technology.
