AMCHAM visits Washington D.C. to solidify the U.S.-Korea Alliance on its 70th Anniversary - AMCHAM to carry out “Washington Doorknock” program between October 24-26, 2023 - The delegation has secured approximately 30 senior-level meetings, including the Hon. Kurt Campbell and Senators Jon Ossoff, Ted Cruz, Todd Young, Mitt Romney as well as Young Kim and Andy Kim and more October 23, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) is traveling with a delegation of top-level executives from the AMCHAM community to Washington D.C. this week to meet with key figures of the Biden Administration and Congress. The annual AMCHAM “Doorknock” program enables key representatives of the global business community in Korea to meet with policymakers and stakeholders in the U.S. government to share insights and provide data that highlight the benefits of the U.S.-Korea trade relationship. This year, the Doorknock visit will run from Tuesday, October 24, to Thursday, October 26. The delegation has secured approximately 30 meetings with officials from various sections of the U.S. Government Administration, including the Department of Commerce, the Department of State, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, the United States Trade Representative, and the White House. The itinerary also includes meetings with the offices of several members of Congress from both political parties, including Senators Jon Ossoff (D-GA), Ted Cruz (R-TX), Todd Young (R-IN), Mitt Romney (R-UT) as well as Young Kim (R-CA), Andy Kim (D-NJ), and more. The group will also be meeting with Kurt Campbell, Deputy Assistant to the President and Coordinator for Indo-Pacific Affairs on the National Security Council. Through these meetings, the delegates plan to underscore the enduring robust U.S.-Korea bilateral relationship, commemorating 70 years of shared achievements. A key message will center on the commitment to deepen the strategic economic and technology partnerships between the two countries. The delegation will also engage in discussions surrounding the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, exploring ways to optimize its various facets. AMCHAM empowers win-win collaboration between global companies and SMEs for sustainable growth AMCHAM SME Collaboration & Innovation Summit 2023 September 7, 2023 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) the very first AMCHAM SME Collaboration & Innovation Summit today at the Grand Hyatt Seoul. Featuring speakers from industry and academia, this event examined the power of collaboration under the theme, “Mutually Sustainable Growth through MNC and SME Partnerships.” The summit kicks off with Congratulatory Remarks from H.E. Lee Jae-jung, Chairperson of the Trade, Industry, Energy, SMEs and Startups Committee at the National Assembly. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim highlighted the clear benefits of partnerships between global companies and SMEs. “Both MNCs and SMEs each offer their distinct and crucial strengths to these alliances, resulting in heightened innovation and superior concepts.” He continued, “AMCHAM is determined to facilitate enhanced business opportunities for SMEs in both the U.S. and Korea. AMCHAM’s ABC and KBC programs are great examples of AMCHAM’s important role in this endeavor. He added, “AMCHAM stands ready to support both governments in driving inclusive economic development and fostering innovation on a global scale. We will continue working closely with industry partners to create an environment conducive to doing business for both SMEs and MNCs.” Deputy Chief of Mission Joy Sakurai from the U.S. Embassy Seoul pledged the U.S. government’s support for collaboration between U.S. and Korean MNCs and SMEs to nurture sustainable innovation and growth. In addition, expert speakers from various global companies shared strategies and best practices that drive economic development and foster innovation on a global scale. Professor Emeritus Chae-Un Lim Sogang University’s School of Business and Chair of the SME Policy Forum at the Korea Academy of SME and Start-up Policy Initiative (KASPI) delivered a keynote speech on the theme, “Strategic Collaboration between Global Companies and Local SMEs: a Relation-Oriented Win-Win.” In his keynote speech, Professor Kim said, “Due to deteriorating external conditions and sluggish domestic demand, it is a challenge for Korean SMEs to create growth engines. If global companies with international marketing capabilities and distribution networks collaborate in a way that opens opportunities for Korean SMEs with excellent technology to expand overseas, a win-win situation, or a ‘Positive Sum,’ is possible.” As an example, he cited Amway Korea, which operates programs such as “One for One” and “Global Open Innovation” to identify SMEs with outstanding potential and provide support in all areas from new product development to overseas sales. President Hae-Chung Shin of Danaher Korea and Supplies Sales Manager Han-Su Yu of HP Korea spoke on the topics, “DBS (Danaher Business System): How Danaher Enables Sustainable Growth” and “HP Amplify Impact - A Partnership for the Sustainable Growth,” respectively, providing an in-depth look into how the two companies utilize partnerships to enable sustainable growth. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim JoinsEnergy Saving Campaign, the Cool Korea Challenge Eco-friendly campaign to encourage people to wear lighter clothes as part of ESG efforts, promoting the significance of environmental preservation and combating global warming August 17, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) Chairman & CEO James Kim participated in the Cool Korea Challenge, the energy saving campaign initiated by fashion group Hyungji and state-run Korea Energy Agency. The relay campaign involves business leaders encouraging people to wear light and cool clothes to conserve energy. In a collective effort, business executives across industries are actively engaging in this eco-friendly campaign to help reduce energy costs and lower the temperature by 2-3 degrees. Their active involvement in ESG activities demonstrates a strong commitment to promote the importance of preserving the environment and combating global warming. The challenge operates as a dynamic relay, in which participants wear cool clothing, share the initiative on their social media accounts and nominate the next participant in the campaign. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “I’m very pleased to be part of this meaningful initiative, the Cool Korea Challenge. The Gwangju Free Economic Zone Authority attracted the attention of participating companies and officials by promoting Gwangju's attractive investment environment such as AI convergence, future mobility, and smart energy. Kicking off the industry presentations, Chris Howard, AI/ML Solutions Architect Leader at AWS Asia Pacific & Japan, shared best practices on how to responsibility implement AI/ML services in a presentation under the theme, “Transform your Business with Generative AI.” He said, Jieun Lee, Chief Technology Officer at IBM Korea, introduced the IBM AI Platform WatsonX in a presentation on the theme, “AI for Business to Accelerate Digital Transformation.” “With the development of foundation models, AI for business is more powerful than ever. WatsonX specializes in providing customizable capabilities for enterprises looking to transition to AI,” she said. “With WatsonX, companies will be able to take control of their data and deploy custom AI capabilities for their entire businesses.” In a presentation on the theme, “Promote, Regulate, or Both? Finding the Right Balance for Generative AI?”, Brian Chung, Foreign Attorney at Kim & Chang, emphasized the need to find a balance between AI technology innovation and regulation. Clint Yoo, Co-Founder & Head of Business at Business Canvas, known as Typed, and Rob Lyu, CEO & Founder of Atlas Labs, delivered presentations on the current state of digital innovation, under the context of Generative AI, SaaS and Cloud technology. AMCHAM, KITA Co-host a Joint Trade & Customs Seminar with Korea Customs Service (KCS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) To Facilitate bilateral trade by deepening the understanding of Korea, U.S. Customs enforcement priorities, and emerging supply chain compliance issues April 24, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM, Chairman and CEO James Kim) co-hosted a joint seminar with KITA by inviting the Korea Customs Service (KCS) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Trade Tower today. Speakers and panelists from CBP and KCS gathered to discuss U.S. Customs and Korea Customs enforcement policies and hear the opinions of various companies, including AMCHAM member companies. Minister for Trade Ahn Duk-geun of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy delivered special remarks to commemorate the upcoming U.S.-ROK Presidential summit. “The Korea-U.S. alliance has evolved beyond military and security partnerships to include the economic alliance, and the KORUS FTA has created expansion opportunities for bilateral cooperation. Since the KORUS FTA went into effect, the trade volume between the two countries has nearly doubled, and investment has also increased two to three times.” he said. He added, “Companies from the two countries should work together to stabilize global supply chains while expanding opportunities for trade and investment cooperation and strengthening partnerships in future industrial sectors. As business-to-business exchanges between the two countries are crucial, we will spare no effort in attracting more investment from U.S. companies to Korea and encouraging more Korean companies to invest in the U.S.” While this event is being held in Korea, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim is promoting U.S.-Korea bilateral economic relations by accompanying President Yoon Suk Yeol on his State Visit this week. “Last year marked a surge in FDI for the U.S. and Korea, with record-breaking numbers and these developments highlight the importance of the upcoming summit as trade and investment have become critical elements of the alliance,” he said. “The summit at this critical juncture provides an excellent opportunity for both countries to reinforce their shared values and goals through meaningful and productive dialogue, taking the U.S.-Korea economic partnership to the next level.” Henry An, Chairman of the AMCHAM Board of Governors and Senior Partner at Samil PricewaterhouseCoopers, highlighted the importance of learning about customs enforcement policies amid the strengthening U.S.-Korea trade relationship. “This year marks the 70th anniversary of the U.S.-Korea alliance and the economic partnership has become a key element of the two nations’ bilateral ties. CBP and KCS play a critical role in ensuring that trade, especially between the U.S. and Korea, continues to be reliable and fair,” he said. “It is crucial that we now familiarize ourselves with customs policies and emerging issues to globalize and strengthen the U.S.-Korea trade relationship and continue our momentum forward.” Jeong Man-ki, Executive Vice Chairman of Korea International Trade Association (KITA), said, “In the first quarter of this year, we recorded a trade surplus of USD $7.2 billion with the United States, making the U.S. the largest trading partner. With the continued trend of strengthening the Korea-U.S. alliance and the favorable performances of exports in battery and material this year, it is expected that exports to the U.S. will continue to growth for the time being.” He added, “I hope that this seminar, meant to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the South Korea-U.S. alliance and to facilitate bilateral trade between the two countries, will serve as an opportunity to strengthen not only customs cooperation between the two countries but also industrial cooperation.” After a brief introduction by Katrina Chang, Senior Advisor at Kim & Chang and Co-chair of the AMCHAM Trade & Customs Committee, the seminar began with presentations by representatives from CBP. AnnMarie Highsmith, Executive Assistant Commissioner at Customs and Border Protection (CBP), delivered an overview of CBP’s enforcements for 2023 and beyond. She said, “The Asia-Pacific region is vitally important to U.S. trade. U.S. Customs and Border Protection is committed to robust collaboration with our industry, government, and civil society partners in Korea and throughout the region. The continued exchange of ideas and expertise will enable us to build a safer and more prosperous future – together.” Ian Saunders, Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Western Hemisphere at Department of Commerce & U.S. Candidate for Secretary General of the World Customs Organization, echoed the opinion that collaboration and exchange are key elements to continuing to develop trade relations. He said, “Robust public-private partnerships are crucial in today’s fast-paced business environment to both secure and facilitate trade and are worthy of being promoted on the global stage. My vision for the World Customs Organization is to empower the organization with access to the views and expertise of the private sector. A well-postured WCO will enable day-to-day success in the management of international trade by global customs administrations.” Following presentations from CBP, representatives from KCS presented on trends in customs enforcement in 2023; the operational direction of customs investigations, including crackdowns on illegal e-commerce and intellectual property protection activities; the operational direction of post-clearance audit in 2023; and the basic procedures for foreign exchange transactions and precautions for capital transactions/exceptional transactions.
