AMCHAM Facilitates Industry Dialogue on Online Platform Bill with Korea Fair Trade Commission AMCHAM holds closed-door Roundtable Meeting with KFTC, reinforcing its Crucial Role as Bridge between Industry and Government January 25, 2024 - The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM; Chairman and CEO James Kim) held a closed-door roundtable meeting with the Korea Fair Trade Commission (KFTC) this morning at the AMCHAM office. The meeting was organized to effectively convey the industry’s perspectives on the proposed “Online Platform Bill.” As part of its continuous efforts to fortify mutual communication regarding proposed regulations between the government and industry, AMCHAM proposed the meeting earlier this year to discuss the case and ensure that the industry’s views could be fully heard and considered. The meeting was attended by AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim, along with other key stakeholders in the global platform industry. The KFTC provided a thorough overview of the goals and essential provisions outlined in the proposed regulations, and representatives of global platform businesses in Korea exchanged opinions on challenges and suggestions related to the proposed “Online Platform Bill” and explored ways to improve the business environment. AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “AMCHAM greatly appreciate the willingness of the KFTC to listen and promptly respond to the concerns and suggestions to improve transparency and strengthen communication about the proposed ‘Online Platform Bill.’ AMCHAM will continue to play its pivotal role as a bridge and a communication channel between the Korean Government and the global business community in the ongoing dialogue.” He urged the government to ensure transparency throughout the legislative process by taking sufficient time to actively collect opinions from industry, and maintain continuous communication with industry stakeholders, including AMCHAM. “AMCHAM will closely collaborate to create a favorable global investment environment for South Korea, enhancing the nation's competitiveness as a business hub in the Asia-Pacific region,” he added. KFTC Secretary General Yook Sung-kwon said, “The enactment of the ‘Platform Act’ will improve the competitive environment of the platform market and provide an opportunity for entrepreneurs to enter and grow with just an idea.” He continued, “The standards and procedures applicable to the “Online Platform Bill” will be clearly and transparently established without distinction between domestic and foreign companies, and will be applied equally without discrimination based on nationality. In his opening remarks, AMCHAM Chairman & CEO James Kim said, “The Healthcare Innovation Seminar is one of AMCHAM’s biggest signature events. Marking its 14th anniversary this year, this seminar has served as a valuable forum for participants from both public and private sectors to collaborate in enhancing the regulatory landscape of the U.S. and Korean healthcare industries and strengthening cooperation of the two countries.” He added, “The healthcare industry has spent the past few years coping with the sudden and vast disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Now stakeholders from all sides, including government and business, need to band together and strategize a way forward in the next frontier of K-healthcare.” Deputy Minister for Planning and Coordination of Ministry of Health and Welfare Kim Hyejin said, “Officially designated as a global hub for human resources in the bio sector by the WHO, Korea is embracing its role as a responsible member of the international community by actively sharing state-of-the-art biopharmaceutical production capabilities and technology with developing nations.” “In the upcoming year, the Ministry of Health and Welfare plans to launch the ‘Boston-Korea Project,’ a collaborative initiative that will develop innovative technologies and train key human resources through joint research by excellent research institutes from both Korea and the United States. Co-Founder & CEO of Promedius Bae Hyun-Jin spoke on the topic “New Possibilities of Medical Imaging AI.” "The accuracy and efficiency of diagnosis emphasized by many medical artificial intelligence products are of course important, but now it is time to challenge a completely new area beyond the limits of existing medical practice," he said, introducing PROS CXR: OSTEO, the world's first AI solution that automatically screens the risk of osteoporosis using chest X-rays. The seminar featured two sessions focusing on the topics “2024 U.S. Business Outlook” and “Corporate Mentoring Session.” The first session was kicked off with a presentation on “U.S. Economic and Policy Outlook 2024” led by Kang Gu-sang, Research Fellow at the Korea Institute of International Economic Policy (KIEP). "The U.S. economy is expected to grow 1.5% next year due to a solid job market and a burden of high-interest rates," he said. "The U.S. job market is expected to lead to an increase in private consumption spending, which accounts for about 70% of U.S. GDP, but it is difficult to record growth as much as this year next year due to a decrease in consumption capacity and a contraction in private investment due to high interest rate levels." He also stressed, "As inflation and quiet indicators in the U.S. are slowing down, we need to pay attention to the possibility that the U.S. Fed's monetary policy will shift to an easing stance next year." AMCHAM Forges Strategic Partnership with Suwon Special City to Boost Economic Collaboration and U.S. Investment AMCHAM signs MOU with Suwon Special City as part of mission to establish Korea as the top business Hub in Asia, fostering economic collaboration and attracting more American investment November 6, 2023 – The American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea; Chairman & CEO James Kim) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Suwon Special City (Mayor Lee Jae-joon) today to strengthen economic collaboration and attract greater investments from American companies.
